{"id":12074,"date":"2019-03-19T13:58:26","date_gmt":"2019-03-19T20:58:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12074"},"modified":"2019-03-19T13:58:26","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T20:58:26","slug":"structural-battery-doubles-flight-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/structural-battery-doubles-flight-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Structural Battery Doubles Flight Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Structural batteries, structures which are also their own energy storage devices, are being looked at with increasing frequency.\u00a0 Your editor has long been a proponent of integrating aircraft structures and the means of generating, storing and releasing energy \u2013 something he calls \u201cthe Grand Unified Airplane.\u201d\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joe_Faust\">Joe Faust, a hang glider pioneer and designer of energy-gathering kites<\/a>, put the idea of including batteries in an airplane\u2019s structure into your editor\u2019s mind.\u00a0 This video from the 1970\u2019s shows Joe was not only athletic and adventurous \u2013 he was clean.\u00a0 His Wikipedia page is even more fascinating.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hang Gliding themed Dial Soap Commercial\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aD4sB4VIsXs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>40 Years Later at Case Western<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Following Joe Faust&#8217;s lead, Case Western professor Vikas Prakash has demonstrated the potential or structural energy storage at model size.\u00a0 In what was described as an<a href=\"https:\/\/thedaily.case.edu\/first-flight-success\/\"> \u201cotherwise unremarkable\u201d craft,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/springfieldohio.gov\/ofrn-team-demos-battery-with-double-lifespan\/\">Prakash inserted \u201cstructural battery\u201d components inside the six-foot wingspan<\/a> on his unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).<\/p>\n<p>Pre- insertion, the craft had been able to fly for 91 minutes before the batteries died.\u00a0 After the structural insertion, it managed 171 minutes without a recharge.*\u00a0 The other immediate benefits of \u00a0such integration include having more fuselage space for larger payloads and a better load distribution in the wings themselves \u2013 making for a stronger airframe.\u00a0 Case Western\u2019s releases don\u2019t mention battery types or how they are incorporated as part of the structure, but if weight remains equal, the enhanced flight duration is a solid achievement.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Prakash works with <a href=\"https:\/\/event38.com\/\">Event 38, an Akron-area drone company<\/a>, and a commercial partner on this battery project, which \u201cbuilds fixed-wing, unmanned aircraft for mapping and surveying applications. The company has customers in 40 countries who primarily use the drones for agriculture or construction purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13662\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/OFRN-Prakash.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13662\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13662\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/OFRN-Prakash-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13662\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeff Taylor of Event 38 and Dr. Prakash of Case Western prepare drone for flight<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jeff Taylor, CEO of Event 38, was on hand to launch the demo flight.\u00a0 He explained, \u201cThe new structural battery system offers benefits that will appeal to our customers.\u00a0 The more efficient battery opens the door to build craft with more complex and sensitive sensors that small drones usually struggle to carry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The small drone will carry cameras for surveillance, but scaling the basic design up would eventually enable carrying larger cargo and even passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Prakash foresees regional electric jets able to carry passengers and cargo and compete in terms of speed and distance with their fuel-burning competition.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Funding and Collaboration<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>His latest work is related to the NASA project conceptually and is funded by the Partnership for Research in Energy Storage and Integration for Defense and Space Exploration (PRESIDES) program. That partnership is sponsored by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohiofrn.org\/\"><strong>Ohio Federal Research Network (OFRN)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and managed by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/energy.case.edu\/\"><strong>Great Lakes Energy Institute<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0at Case Western Reserve.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13661\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/lead-image-drone-structural-battery-Wing-integrated-battery-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13661\" class=\"wp-image-13661 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/lead-image-drone-structural-battery-Wing-integrated-battery-2-528x296.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A large team and support vehicle for a small drone.
