CIAL is honored for its successful execution of one of the revolutionary ideas of using solar energy which made Cochin\u00a0\u00a0Airport a first in the world fully powered by it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides generating 40 megawatts of electricity from its solar panels at 2018 levels, the airport grows organic vegetables beneath those panels.\u00a0 To ensure optimum land use, \u201cCIAL has successfully implemented organic farming of\u00a0vegetables in area[s] between solar panels. The airport stands at fourth in the country in terms\u00a0of international traffic and seventh in total traffic has handled\u00a0ten million passengers in 2017-18.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Southern Indian city of Kochi Boasts World&#039;s First Fully Solar Powered Airport\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BRgX0Q45i2w?start=3&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>V.J.Kurian, Managing Director for CIAL, has an integrated concept that provides power for airport services and even feeds the 8,000 employees in diverse occupations who serve the traveling public and\u00a0 grow the organic produce.\u00a0 Kurian explains the overall program results in annual cost savings of Rs. 40 Crore to the airport.\u00a0 As explained in Answers.com,\u00a0 a crore is not an amount of money, but an Indian counting method, like counting things in scores or dozens.\u00a0 1 Crore refers to 10,000,000, so 40 Crore = 400,000,000 million Indian Rupee (INR), or about $5,783,689.60 as of March 24 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Kurian adds, \u201cWe showed the world that big infrastructure projects like [Cochin] Airport can be put into operation fully using alternative energy sources.\u201d\u00a0 . This will also avoid CO2 emissions by more than 9 lakh metric tons over the next 25 years, which is equivalent ot\u00a0\u00a0planting 90 lakh trees or not driving 2,400 million miles \u201c.\u00a0 (Lahk is another unit in Indian counting, one lakh equal to 150,000.\u00a0 90 lakh trees would be 13,500,000 trees \u2013a \u00a0substantial number.)<\/p>\n<p>Feeding the airport&#8217;s workers from the under-solar-panel gardens while having enough food left to sell to incoming passengers <em>and<\/em> generating all the power necessary to operate a large airport should give managers worldwide impetus to examine this new option.<\/p>\n<p>If this were augmented with electric taxiing systems, such as those developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safran-landing-systems.com\/systems-equipment\/electric-taxiing-0\">Safran<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asdnews.com\/news-43709\/crane_and_l-3_reach_agreement_to_market_greentaxi_electric_taxi_system.htm\">L3<\/a>, could further use solar-generated, scalable electric supplies to offset the need for expanded grids and added fuel burdens.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13670\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/an-example-of-how-the-system-boosts-efficiency.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13670\" class=\"wp-image-13670 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/an-example-of-how-the-system-boosts-efficiency.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"325\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13670\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Growing plants next to and under the solar panels at the airport boosts overall productivity<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Inverse.com reports that, \u201cIt\u2019s the latest example of how panels can work to help crops grow, a field known as \u201cagrophotovoltaics.\u201d Researchers from Germany\u2019s University of Hohenheim\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ise.fraunhofer.de\/en\/press-media\/press-releases\/2017\/harvesting-the-sun-for-power-and-produce-agrophotovoltaics-increases-the-land-use-efficiency-by-over-60-percent.html\">ran an experiment<\/a>\u00a0in 2017 where they placed 720 solar panels in scaffolds above a series of crops.
