It has a $2 million prize package backed by Boeing and others.\u00a0 Ms. Lighter describes her brainchild as follows: \u201cThe $2 million GoFly competition encourages mad scientists and daredevils to come as close as possible to Star Wars\u2019s light cycles, James Bond\u2019s jetpack, Marty McFly\u2019s hoverboard, or any other flying dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five Phase 2 winners <a href=\"https:\/\/goflyprize.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GoFly-Technical-Rules.pdf\">exemplify the open rule-book approach<\/a> around which the contest is organized.\u00a0 Lighter explained it two years ago <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/alltechconsidered\/2017\/09\/27\/553793172\/wish-you-could-soar-a-2-million-contest-aims-for-personal-flying-device\">in an NPR interview<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cWhat the device looks like and how it works is up to the innovators.\u00a0 We do not mandate that it&#8217;s something you get into like a car, or something that you strap on your back, or something that you stand on. We don&#8217;t want to say that there is any right way of doing it, since that only limits the possibilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"GoFly Prize: Announcing the Phase II Winners\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6yUdoDU0Y70?start=76&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The five Phase II winners receive $50,000 each to enable further development of their machines and to prepare them for the Phase III flyoff late this year.\u00a0 The five come from Russia and Latvia (one team), The Netherlands, Texas, Florida, and California.\u00a0 Configurations are based on the contest ideas of compactness, quietness, and the ability to land and take off in a constrained area and safely carry an individual 20 miles.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Teams and Their Flying Machines<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Team Aeroxo<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Team Aeroxo\u2019s Russian and Latvian members have created what they call an ERA Aviabike, although it\u2019s hard to see the \u201cbike\u201d part other than in the probably uncomfortable seating position.\u00a0 Aviabike might be the most complex of the entries, too, with 16 pivoting ducted fans providing vertical takeoffs and landing and relatively high-speed forward flight.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"GoFly Meet the Teams: Team Aeroxo\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SgoyMAaLaxI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Team DragonAir<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>DragonAir benefits from a head start it got over the competition.\u00a0 Mariah Cain, the only female captain on the five finalist teams, had experience on those water-powered hoverboards one sees on TV commercials and stunt shows.<\/p>\n<p>According to FastCompany, \u201cShe also discovered Jeff Elkins, an engineer and inventor building hydroflight gear. \u2018We became good friends,\u2019 says Cain, \u2018and then he realized I was the perfect size to fly his pet project, which is the AirBoard.\u2019 It maneuvers similarly to a hydroflight pack. Sensors that measure a pilot\u2019s movements allow them to simply lean in the direction they want to go.\u201d\u00a0 Ray Brandes is the third member of the small team.\u00a0 Still, one hopes that Mariah\u2019s feet are securely fastened to the platform.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"GoFly Meet the Teams: Team DragonAir\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wQtwz3tJbEk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Team Silverwing<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Team Silverwing Personal Flight\u2019 S1\u00a0pivots on its axis, making a 90-degree transition from vertical takeoff and landing orientation to horizontal cruise flight.\u00a0 The team describes it as able to, \u201ctake off vertically carrying a person, fly for 30 minutes, and land in an area the size of a parking space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SI is a canard-wing configuration around a person in motorcycle-like orientation powered by two electric motors with ducted rotors.
