{"id":12138,"date":"2019-05-27T22:39:44","date_gmt":"2019-05-28T05:39:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12138"},"modified":"2019-05-27T22:39:44","modified_gmt":"2019-05-28T05:39:44","slug":"blackbird-air-bye-aerospace-add-to-eflyer-sales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/blackbird-air-bye-aerospace-add-to-eflyer-sales\/","title":{"rendered":"BlackBird Air, Bye Aerospace Add to eFlyer Sales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BlackBird Air, Inc., an on-demand flight service operating out of San Carlos, California, has announced it intends to buy 100 eFlyer 4s and 10 eFlyer 2s from Bye Aerospace.\u00a0 These will augment the firm\u2019s existing fleet of Cirrus SR22s and Pilatus PC12s in providing service to its customers.<\/p>\n<p>As the <em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em> explains, BlackBird has been called \u201cthe Uber of air travel,\u201d an app-driven service that enables flights to cities like Burbank, Palm Springs and Las Vegas.\u00a0 Sarah Feldberg, writing for the Chronicle, runs through the niceties of this different plane rental approach.\u00a0 \u201cThe interface operates like any trip-booking app until you\u2019ve selected your date and destination. Then, BlackBird prompts you to either join an existing flight or create your own by choosing an aircraft and departure time. For $408, you can fly a three-seater [plus pilot], single-engine Cirrus SR22 from Oakland to Tahoe City on May 24, leaving roughly whenever you\u2019d like and arriving an hour later.\u201d\u00a0 Split three ways, each person pays a mere $136 for a one hour commute with no TSA and a flight in which every seat is a window seat.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13884\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cirrus-SR22.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13884\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13884\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Cirrus-SR22-528x281.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cirrus SR22 currently flown by BlackBird uses 10-12.5 gallons per hour, produces 95 dBa inside the airplane<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Those jumping on scheduled flights can pay as little as $99 for a trip of similar length.\u00a0 BlackBird calculates this as being similar to, or less than, the cost of driving the same distance, coupled with the benefit of not spending hours behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p>BlackBird\u2019s SR22s and their Pilatus PC12s burn fossil fuels and require expensive maintenance.\u00a0 The SR22 consumes 10 to 12.5 gallons of 100-octane low-lead fuel every hour, and the PC12 burns 70 gallons per hour of Jet A.\u00a0 Current prices in the bay area set the costs at about $55 to $60 per hour for the Cirrus and around $350 per hour for the Pilatus.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13885\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sunflyer-inflight2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13885\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13885\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sunflyer-inflight2-528x226.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13885\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunflyer 4 (now eFlyer 4) in artist&#8217;s view. Once it jumps certification, logistics, and other hurdles, this and other electric aircraft could offer quiet, affordable aerial travel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The arrival of electric eFlyers should reduce energy costs for equivalent flights considerably.\u00a0 \u201cAs engineer and entrepreneur Paul Touw told the Chronicle last year, based on data from the U.S. Department of Energy and Uber, an electric airplane could make a 50-mile trip at a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/travel\/article\/A-tech-fueled-revolution-in-air-travel-is-nearly-13336388.php?psid=4zpA\">10 percent lower price per passenger than a standard bus<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and in a third of the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2019This partnership will provide more flight options for cheaper,\u2019 [CEO Rudd] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyblackbird.com\/\">Davis said of the Bye Aerospace deal.<\/a> \u2018If you could be in Tahoe in 45 minutes for $25, why would you ever choose to drive?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 All of this seems quite wonderful, and might become more so with the level of quietness brought by the coming electric aircraft.\u00a0 $25 would be just the operating cost, obviously.\u00a0 Passengers would pay a low fare, though, for the privilege of flying in such an efficient machine.<\/p>\n<h4>A Devil&#8217;s Advocate<\/h4>\n<p>Being Uber-like means that as it now stands, BlackBird and many other airplane rental operations do not necessarily own the aircraft they make available to the flying public.\u00a0 Uber&#8217;s &#8220;app&#8221; allows passengers to make deals with drivers for the use of the driver-owned vehicle.\u00a0 With BlackBird purchasing 100 eFlyer 4s, this relationship may change.\u00a0 One might review this interesting and probably controversial write-up by\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/privatejetcardcomparisons.com\/author\/douglasgollan\/\">Doug Gollan.<\/a> He describes himself thus, and wrote the article with the help of an aviation attorney.\u00a0 &#8220;I am Founder and Editor of Private Jet Card Comparisons, the only independent buyer&#8217;s guide to jet card membership programs, and DG Amazing Experiences, a weekly luxury travel e-newsletter for private jet owners. The house icon at the center top left represents Carlmont High School.\u00a0 Graphic by Chris Peter<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>eFlyers to the Rescue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Economically and Aurally, Bye Aerospace\u2019s eFlyers should make life better for operators and residents.\u00a0 As BlackBird replaces gas-fired SR22s and Cessnas with eFlyers, noise complaints should dissipate and operating costs decline.\u00a0 They will still have the problems of noise complaints for their PC12s, just as Surf Air faces.<\/p>\n<p>BlackBird\u2019s press release explains, \u201cFor over a decade, Bye Aerospace has been hard at work building the world\u2019s first certified electric plane. These planes are 75% less expensive and 5\u201310 times faster than driving a car. What\u2019s that mean for you? Think about a place you love that\u2019s five hours away by car, likely costing more than $100 in gas each way. As soon as next year, that same place will be 45 min and $25 away with BlackBird.\u201d\u00a0 Now those numbers may be a bit optimistic, But dropping the fuel costs and substituting much less expensive electric bills should make the bottom line much more profitable.<\/p>\n<p>The Chronicle article tends to confirm the optimism.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s because electric motors are extremely efficient. As engineer and entrepreneur Paul Touw told the Chronicle last year, based on data from the U.S. Department of Energy and Uber, an electric airplane could make a 50-mile trip at a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/travel\/article\/A-tech-fueled-revolution-in-air-travel-is-nearly-13336388.php?psid=4zpA\">10 percent lower price per passenger than a standard bus<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and in a third of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>A Few Hurdles Left to Clear<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bizcarson\/2019\/03\/12\/uber-for-planes-startup-blackbird-raises-10-million-to-replace-road-trips-with-flying-private\/#33c916282590\">Forbes magazine is taking this business seriously,<\/a> explaining, \u201cRegulations are another hurdle and part of the reason it\u2019s taken Davis three years to land on a business model. In 2015, the FAA grounded a few startups, like AirPooler and Flytenow, that had tried building a flight-sharing model by connecting private pilots to passengers willing to pay.
