{"id":12145,"date":"2019-06-01T15:22:26","date_gmt":"2019-06-01T22:22:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12145"},"modified":"2019-06-01T15:22:26","modified_gmt":"2019-06-01T22:22:26","slug":"a-2-3-scale-xti-trifan-600-hovers-successfully","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/a-2-3-scale-xti-trifan-600-hovers-successfully\/","title":{"rendered":"A 2\/3-Scale XTI TriFan 600 Hovers Successfully"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>XTI\u2019s TriFan 600 recently flew as a TriFan 665, for the 65-percent test concept vehicle.\u00a0 There are good reasons for a first flight on this reduced scale, including being able to use smaller motors and batteries, less material, and possibly simplified systems.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Trifan 600 | First Hover Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7Tk-GI7A8DY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On May 8, 2019,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.einpresswire.com\/article\/484379723\/xti-aircraft-company-successfully-tests-prototype-trifan-600-vertical-takeoff-airplane\">XTI Aircraft announced<\/a>\u00a0that they had successfully completed the first test flights of its 65% scale prototype of the TriFan 600 VTOL aircraft:\u00a0 The 2\/3 concept machine, built on the local Experimental Aircraft Association\u2019s turf, elicits some wonder because none of the chapter\u2019s recent newsletters or Facebook posts mentioned that this project was underway.\u00a0 Having worked in a design\/build architectural-engineering firm, your editor knows all too well what the phrase \u201cconfidential client\u201d means.\u00a0 Chapter 512, knowing the TriFan was on the field, held that confidentiality well.\u00a0 Only XTI itself made any public pronouncements about the project.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13908\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/XTI-665-rear-view-4-inch-hover-all-wheels-up.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13908\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13908\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/XTI-665-rear-view-4-inch-hover-all-wheels-up-528x289.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">XTI 665 hovers with all four wheels off the ground. Although tethered, it apparently was docile in its behavior<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/transportup.com\/headlines-breaking-news\/xti-aircraft-completes-successful-prototype-test\/\">According to Transport UP,<\/a> \u201cDuring testing early this month, the 65% scale prototype of the TriFan 600\u00a0 completed\u00a0multiple takeoffs, hover, and landings. These flights successfully tested and validated the electric motors, battery power system, ducted fan propulsion, flight controls, other electrical systems and instrumentation. Although this flight did not include the transition between vertical and fixed wing flight or horizontal flight, XTI is already planning these future tests at a designated UAS site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>XTI Chief Executive Officer Robert LaBelle commented, \u201cThis is the moment the entire XTI team, our investors, customers, and many others have been waiting for and working toward. In one year, we have progressed from conceptual design to a flying prototype.\u00a0 The aircraft proved to be stable in hover and had no problems throughout several runs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>XTI has amassed over 90 orders for the $6.5 million aircraft, representing about $585 million in future revenue, and even raised $1.5 million from an equity crowdfunding campaign on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startengine.com\/xti-aircraft\">Startengine<\/a>.\u00a0 Robert LaBelle and George Bye explain the fine points of the design and its relatively low operating costs.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Trifan 600 VTOL\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AeBNdDI44CI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>XTI and <a href=\"http:\/\/evtol.news\/2019\/05\/08\/xti-trifan-665-flies\/\"><em>eVTOL News<\/em> <\/a>explain that, \u201cthe TriFan 600 is a six-seat, hybrid-electric, fixed-wing airplane that uses three ducted fans to power the aircraft from vertical takeoff and landing to 340 kt (630 km\/h) and a range of 650 nm (1,200 nm) for VTOL or 1,200 nm (2,200 km) when operating from a runway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The full size airplane will span 37.7 ft (11.5 m) with a fuselage 38.7 ft (11.8 m) long. The two wing-mounted ducts will have single 6 ft (1.8 m) diameter propellers powered by two 350 hp (260 kW) electric motors and two 5 ft (1.5 m) diameter co-axial ducted propellers located in the aft fuselage with one motor for each propeller.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trekaero.com\/\">Trek Aerospace<\/a> designed and built the ducted fans and propellers and oversaw assembly of the 2\/3-scale proof-of-of concept vehicle.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mgmcompro\/\">MGM Compro<\/a> supplied electric motors and controllers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13910\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/XTI-Interior.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13910\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13910\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/XTI-Interior-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13910\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">XTI&#8217;s TriFan 600 will have a luxurious interior for its passengers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As George Bye explains in the video, a single 1,000 shp (745 kW)-class Honeywell HTS900 turboshaft engine will power three generators in the hybrid-electric propulsion system.<\/p>\n<p>Further, untethered tests will take place at the Deseret UAS Center in Tooele, Utah, and full-size XTIs will be delivered to customers beginning in 2024, ready to take off from corporate rooftops.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fa-2-3-scale-xti-trifan-600-hovers-successfully%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>XTI\u2019s TriFan 600 recently flew as a TriFan 665, for the 65-percent test concept vehicle.\u00a0 There are good reasons for a first flight on this reduced scale, including being able to use smaller motors and batteries, less material, and possibly simplified systems.
