{"id":12157,"date":"2019-06-11T22:29:44","date_gmt":"2019-06-12T05:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12157"},"modified":"2019-06-11T22:29:44","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T05:29:44","slug":"alakai-skai-levitates-on-hydrogen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/alakai-skai-levitates-on-hydrogen\/","title":{"rendered":"Alaka\u2019i Skai Levitates on Hydrogen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alaka\u2019I is Hawaiian for \u201cthe value of leadership\u201d according to an island management consulting firm.\u00a0 The word and the company have found a home in Boston, Massachusetts, where they look over the Alaka&#8217;i <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skai.co\">Skai, a hydrogen-powered sky taxi<\/a> that will offer \u201cpoint-to-any-point transportation that [is] safe, simple, zero-emissions, affordable and comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alaka&#039;i Skai - Hydrogen powered VTOL air taxi\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uhMP5237dGA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Alala\u2019i, founded by Brian Morrison, adds a hydrogen fuel cell hybrid-electric craft to the eVTOL market with a design by BMW-owned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwgroupdesignworks.com\/\">Designworks<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0From above, it looks a bit like a water-skipper, probably an apt look considering its fuel.\u00a0 Alaka\u2019i emphasizes three points in its sales literature: simplicity, safety and the cleanness of its fuel and operation.<\/p>\n<p>With several patents supporting the aircraft the machine supports its creators\u2019 backgrounds, including 20 years with NASA. \u00a0\u00a0Alaka\u2019I claims the fuel cells are 95-percent reusable, the remaining five percent are 99-percent recyclable, with longer duration and range than its current competitors.\u00a0 Its \u201csimple\u201d fuel system with three separate fuel cells enables its ability to carry up to 1,000 pounds in passengers or cargo.\u00a0 \u00a0Hydrogen has the highest specific energy of any practical fuel.\u00a0 It can be refueled in 10 minutes, a significant benefit for repeated flights and speedy turnarounds.\u00a0 Alaka\u2019i Technologies Board Member Dr. Bruce Holmes points out, \u201cHydrogen has a few hundred times the energy density of the best of lithium ion battery technology.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13976\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/alakai-Skai-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13976\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13976\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/alakai-Skai-4-528x227.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Skai interior arranged in 1 plus 4 fashion provides a full view to each passenger<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Alaka\u2019i has done the numbers on indirect costs and sources or pollution, including gasoline or diesel truck transporting the otherwise clean fuel, and is devising methods to eliminate or reduce these indirect burdens.<\/p>\n<p>Six 100-horsepower outrunner electric motors give built-in redundancy, and can power its 1,000-pound payload over four hours or 400 hundred miles at 118 mph.\u00a0 Triple redundancy in its fuel system and advance control systems will help enable safer operation.\u00a0 Skai promotes its development team for its \u201cnext-generation Fly-By-Light controls and FAA certified avionics. All of these components are certified and proven. In fact, some of these trusted technologies were originally developed by Skai team members for prominent aerospace and defense clients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alaka\u2019i Technologies, they explain, \u201cis an emerging air mobility design and manufacturing company founded by Brian Morrison. The executive team has decades of aerospace development including NASA, Raytheon, Beech Aircraft, McDonnell Douglas, Hughes and more. The company is engineering proprietary, progressive air mobility solutions to offer point-to-any-point transportation that are safe, simple, zero-emissions, affordable and comfortable.
