{"id":12169,"date":"2019-06-24T21:47:32","date_gmt":"2019-06-25T04:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12169"},"modified":"2019-06-24T21:48:30","modified_gmt":"2019-06-25T04:48:30","slug":"a-huge-battery-with-an-airplane-painted-on-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/a-huge-battery-with-an-airplane-painted-on-it\/","title":{"rendered":"A Huge Battery with an Airplane Painted On It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eviation.co\/alice\/\">Eviation, an Israeli company developing Alice,<\/a> a high-speed, intermediate-distance commuter airplane, brought its prototype to the Paris Air Show this week.\u00a0 Eviation co-founder and CEO Omer Bar-Yohay gave journalists a 27-minute overview of the aircraft, the philosophy behind it, and projections on its immediate future.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Livestream from the Paris Air Show: Eviation Reveals it&#039;s All-Electric Alice Plane\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Eta7I5OCaIk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s basically a huge battery with some plane painted on it,&#8221; he told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>The 6,350 kilogram (13,970 pound) airplane carries 900 kilowatt-hours of batteries, equivalent to the cells in nine Tesla S P100D automobiles or one Tesla semi-truck.\u00a0 Even that, according to rough figuring by yours truly and polished calculations by a smarter reader, seems to provide for only half the necessary energy to provide the range Eviation claims.\u00a0 Will flight tests prove us misguided?<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HEWyM9f1emc<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fuel Burn vs. kWh<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Carrying capacity and performance are similar to the Beechcraft King Air.\u00a0 The King Air burns 100 gallons per hour at a fuel cost around $550.\u00a0 The Alice consumes about 400 kilowatt hours at a cost of $44 (based on the PGE rate of 11 cents per kW-hour).\u00a0 Its sleek shape provides Alice with a better lift-to-drag ratio, but maybe not enough to account for its total efficiency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cape Air Airlines Buys Some<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mvtimes.com\/2019\/06\/21\/cape-air-lead-charge-electric-air-travel\/\"><em>The Martha\u2019s Vineyard Times<\/em><\/a> reports that Cape Air Airlines will be the first to purchase at least 10 Alices.\u00a0 \u201cAt the Paris Air Show, the chief executive officer for Eviation, Omer Bar-Yohay, announced that Cape Air would be the first customer to implement the new efficient aircraft technology, with \u2018double-digit\u2019 order numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14061\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Eviation-Alice-at-Paris-Air-Show-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14061\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14061\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Eviation-Alice-at-Paris-Air-Show-2-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14061\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alice drew a crowd to hear an address by Eviation&#8217;s CEO, Omer Bar-Yohay<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>The Times <\/em>adds, \u201cAlthough the plane is still in its developmental stages, two different versions of the Alice are planned. The initial model will be used for air-taxi operations, and will use energy stored in a lithium-ion battery.
