{"id":12171,"date":"2019-06-26T21:11:54","date_gmt":"2019-06-27T04:11:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12171"},"modified":"2019-06-26T21:11:54","modified_gmt":"2019-06-27T04:11:54","slug":"borschberg-h55-introduce-brm-energic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/borschberg-h55-introduce-brm-energic\/","title":{"rendered":"Borschberg, H55 Introduce BRM Energic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Leadership is about empowering people to make them owner of their world, and constantly challenging them to make them extend their known territory.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Andre\u2019 Borschberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Andre\u2019 Borschberg\u2019s current challenge, shared with Bertrand Piccard, involves their <a href=\"https:\/\/solarimpulse.com\/\">Solar Impulse Foundation<\/a>, whose goal is to foster 1,000 solutions \u201cthat protect the environment in a profitable way.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cProfitable\u201d helps produce results, and with Piccard being a psychiatrist, ensures the self-interest that drives many also drives a certain level of altruism in saving the environment.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"H55 The Future of Electric Aviation\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zxKATIVGG3E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Borschberg and two other Solar Impulse leaders, S\u00e9bastien Demont and Gregory Blatt, founded H55 and produced a modification of the Silence Twister, a single-seat aircraft with a Siemens motor.\u00a0 Their latest conversion, following their philosophy of, \u201cBuilding up experience by flying existing airplanes with electric propulsion,\u201d uses what looks like an Emrax motor in a Bristell Energic two-seat training craft.<\/p>\n<h4>\u201cSingle Engine Dual Battery Pack System\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>Energic is an electric variant of a Czech Republic Light Sport Aircraft, with an electric power setup replacing the conventional Rotax engine.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14081\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/H55-motor-schematic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14081\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14081\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/H55-motor-schematic-528x350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14081\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Motor, batteries and cooling system all fit neatly under tight cowling<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At the heart of the Energic, a modular 50 kilowatt-hour battery pack drives a 90-kilowatt (120.6 horsepower peak output), 65 kW (87 horsepower) continuous output motor for up to 90 minutes. \u00a0According to H55, the battery can be recharged in one hour. The battery system embedded in the wings, is controlled by a dual analog\/digital battery management system (BMS).\u00a0 Batteries include both 18650 and 21700 (18 millimeter diameter x 65 mm long and 21 mm diameter x 70 mm long) cells.\u00a0 H55, working with authorities, hopes to certify the system CS23, Europe\u2019s equivalent to FAR Part 23.\u00a0 The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) oversees CS 23.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14077\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/H55-two-seater.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14077\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14077\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/H55-two-seater-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14077\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Single motor, dual battery system in H55&#8217;s Energic<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Energic flies at a maximum weight of 850 kilograms (1,870 pounds) while carrying a payload of up to 200 kilograms (440 pounds) \u2013 enough for two substantial passengers and luggage.\u00a0 Energic seems plenty energetic, with a climb rate of 900 feet per minute.\u00a0 Operating costs are low, with a recharge, in Europe, costing a mere $7.00.\u00a0 In the Portland, Oregon area, PGE would charge about $5.50 at normal rates.\u00a0 Being able to do an hour of touch-and-goes for a total operating cost under $10 an hour would do a great deal to entice new students into learning a new skill.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14078\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/H55-batteries.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14078\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14078\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/H55-batteries-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14078\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Energic&#8217;s batteries nest in each wing, are split between 18650 and 21700 sizes<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>Building is Relatively Easy, Certification is Harder<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>H55 explains, \u201cThe biggest challenge is not building and flying a prototype, rather certification.
