{"id":12179,"date":"2019-07-10T21:25:47","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T04:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12179"},"modified":"2019-07-10T21:25:47","modified_gmt":"2019-07-11T04:25:47","slug":"total-operating-costs-batteries-included","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/total-operating-costs-batteries-included\/","title":{"rendered":"Total Operating Costs &#8211; Batteries Included"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gilles Rosenberger, co-founder of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Faraday.Aero\/\"> Faraday Aero<\/a>space with Michael Friend, former Technology Director for Boeing, commented on a recent entry on <a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/borschberg-h55-introduce-brm-energic\/\">H55\u2019s Energic two-seat trainer<\/a>.\u00a0 He expanded on the idea of total operating costs for electric aircraft, including the battery replacement.<\/p>\n<p>He congratulated the H55 team and added a point about which your editor will attempt greater diligence.\u00a0 \u201cBut why keeping talking about operating cost and not total cost of ownership?\u00a0 No pilot, no student is going to pay only few dollars per hours based on the energy cost.\u00a0 Who do you believe is going to pay for other cost including the battery amortization?&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14149\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/comparative-battery-prices.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14149\" class=\"wp-image-14149\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/comparative-battery-prices.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14149\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Comparative battery prices over the last decade. Note also Tesla&#8217;s ability to remain less expensive than Chinese BYD cells<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Practicing the best public relations and salesmanship gambits, most aircraft sales operations don\u2019t mention the eventual cost of battery replacement.\u00a0 Gilles, who can speak from experience because of his work on the Airbus E-Fan project, says, \u201cBest industry standards seem to be today 1.000 \u20ac (or $1,125) per kWh for a 1,000 cycles non-certified battery pack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Do Replacement Batteries Cost, Anyway?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Checking this against both automotive and small aircraft numbers, and assuming that aircraft certification will invariably raise prices, we present a few real-price examples.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14150\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/leaf-pack-620.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14150\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14150\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/leaf-pack-620-528x383.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"383\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Nissan Leaf battery pack &#8211; a bit pricey, depending on its life time<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nissan Leafs have a smaller-than-Tesla pack, with 24 kilowatt-hour capacity for earlier models and 40 kWh for newer cars.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/batterymanguide.com\/nissan-leaf-replacement-battery-cost\/\">BatteryMan.com<\/a> says new prices for the 24 kWh units now run $6,200 and $7,800 for the 40 kWh units. At $258 and $195 per kWh respectively, these prices undercut Gilles\u2019s numbers considerably.\u00a0 Unfortunately, they only apply to Japanese customers with a core battery for exchange.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/general\/2016\/04\/26\/teslas-battery-pack-costs-are-cheaper-than-you-thi.aspx\">Motley Fools, in 2016,<\/a> said Chevy\u2019s Bolt battery cells would cost $145 per kWh <em>at the cell level<\/em>, with an estimated $210 per kWh at the pack level.\u00a0 This was better than the Fool\u2019s estimate of $260 per kWh for Tesla\u2019s pack price, although Tesla claimed $190 packs \u2013 a controversial number.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comparing Auto and Airplane Prices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pipistrel\u2019s January prices for its battery packs, as used on their Taurus electric self-launching sailplane, are 10,200 euros ($11,480) for the 30 kWh unit and 13,600 euros ($15,310) for the 40 kWh size.\u00a0 This works out to $382.70 and $382.75 per kWh, respectively.\u00a0 One wonders why the smaller pack works out to be five cents per kWh cheaper.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14147\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/pipistrel-Electric-Propulsion-Generic-2-600x380.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14147\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14147\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/pipistrel-Electric-Propulsion-Generic-2-600x380-528x334.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14147\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pipistrel&#8217;s so-called &#8220;plug-and-play&#8221; electric propulsion system. Batteries are largest, heaviest and most expensive part of setup<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gilles points out, \u201cWith the assumption of 400 flight hours per year, the battery life should be in the 3 years range (not every flight will fully discharge the battery), and 50 kWh battery amortization will [require] about 46 \u20ac\/$51.79 more per hour (50 kWh x 1.000 \u20ac\/$1.13 per kWh \/ 400 hrs x 3 years).\u201d\u00a0 He adds, \u201cOf course these figures will be discussed but nobody can say it will be nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether Gilles\u2019 higher number or the examples shown above prevail, there is a \u201cballoon payment\u201d that lurks at the end of the battery pack\u2019s life.\u00a0 Your editor watches automobile auctions on TV occasionally, and notes the sometimes extraordinarily low price a gleaming classic fetches.\u00a0 Announcers explain that the BMW or Bentley that rolled off the block is hampered by the fact that buyers know the previous owner got the initial mileage out of the vehicle, while second and third owners will face replacement parts bills and high-priced maintenance.\u00a0 What will these similar considerations mean for the secondary electric aircraft market?<\/p>\n<p>We will endeavor, in this blog, to come up with an average battery replacement cost where a more exact number is not available, to help determine a total operating cost for each aircraft we write about.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14146\" style=\"width: 479px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Dzus_fastener_from_US_Patent_1955740.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14146\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14146\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Dzus_fastener_from_US_Patent_1955740-469x704.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"469\" height=\"704\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14146\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1934 patent drawing shows details of Dzuz fastener, or &#8220;Dzuz Key&#8221; named for its inventor. These held cowling doors and inspection flaps in place.\u00a0 Whether by design or happy accident, a dime could turn the screw, so instructors would advice their students to always being one flying. Note the small pieces comprising the fastener and its nut-plate mount.
