{"id":12199,"date":"2019-08-01T23:55:33","date_gmt":"2019-08-02T06:55:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12199"},"modified":"2019-08-01T23:55:33","modified_gmt":"2019-08-02T06:55:33","slug":"oxis-energy-bye-aerospace-develop-lithium-sulfur-cells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/oxis-energy-bye-aerospace-develop-lithium-sulfur-cells\/","title":{"rendered":"OXIS Energy, Bye Aerospace Develop Lithium-Sulfur Cells"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Diane Simard,\u00a0Senior Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors for Bye Aerospace, sends your editor occasional news from that company.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/markets.financialcontent.com\/stocks\/news\/read?GUID=38637380\">The latest involves a collaboration with OXIS Energy<\/a> in England to develop new Lithium-Sulfur battery cell technology that shows great, and (even better) near-term promise.<\/p>\n<p>Ready to start in September, the project will develop cells that will, \u201dAchieve the higher energy density required for such aircraft,\u201d referring to Bye\u2019s eFlyer 2 and eFlyer 4 light aircraft.\u00a0 A big jump over currently available batteries, OXIS is now evaluating cells that produce 400 Watt-hours per kilogram, with a promised leap to 500 kW-hr by next year.\u00a0 The best lithium-ion cells at the pack level available now manage 260 W-hr\/kg.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Interview with Huw W. Hampson-Jones, CEO OXIS Energy August 2018\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/285470240?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Huw W. Hampson-Jones, CEO of OXIS Energy<strong>, <\/strong>discusses his company\u2019s unique approach to battery development and what this portends for future flight and general electric mobility.\u00a0 Explaining OXIS\u2019s applications, he adds, &#8220;Aviation is one of OXIS&#8217; target markets, and in the first instance, Regional Rapid Air Taxi Transportation. A key measure of OXIS&#8217; suitability is to be able to consistently produce cells in excess of 400 Wh\/kg, which are already undergoing evaluation. OXIS expects to achieve 500 Wh\/kg by early 2020. Our Li-S cells and battery systems are ideally suited for aviation. They are over 50-percent lighter than the current Li-ion cell and battery systems, with the winning formula of a high energy cell at the power required. The use of the same cell format across batteries will also help our customers to minimize cost and improve serviceability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Consisting of a lithium metal anode, a sulfur-based cathode, a safe electrolyte protecting the lithium metal, and a \u201cstate of the art\u201d separator, the cells have the advantage of allowing full depth of discharge (DOD). \u00a0This gives a 20-percent endurance advantage over Li-ion cells.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14253\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/OXIS-cell-diagram.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14253\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14253\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/OXIS-cell-diagram-528x382.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"382\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Structure of lithium-sulfur cell<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/45uevg34gwlltnbsf2plyua1-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/OXIS-Li-S-Ultra-Light-Cell-spec-sheet-v4.2.pdf\">An available and \u201calready proven\u201d pouch cell<\/a> provides 2.1 nominal Volts at a typical capacity of 10 to 35 Amp-hours.\u00a0 OXIS will make the pouches in two versions: One disadvantage might be the 100 charge-discharge cycles (full DOD?) available from the pouches.\u00a0 That might make them a little pricey.\u00a0 We might assume (always dangerous) that cell life will improve with further development.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High energy density cell (&gt;500 Wh\/kg) for small electric aircrafts (2 seater), UAV and High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS).<\/li>\n<li>High power cell (&gt;400 Wh\/kg) for automotive applications and electric Vertical Take Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>George Bye, CEO of Bye Aerospace, said, &#8220;New Li-S battery cells from Oxis have the potential to greatly enhance the quality, cost and performance of eFlyer 4 and our other future aircraft projects. Our collaboration with OXIS is separate from the current eFlyer 2 agreements and intentions we have with confirmed and our future supply chain partners.\u00a0 Bye Aerospace is working with Oxis on the Li-S battery cell characteristics to significantly improve our eFlyer 4 and future air taxi aircraft designs&#8217; performance.\u00a0 The average age of the global market for Turboprop fleet is 28 years.
