The project is funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vinnova.se\/en\">Swedish innovation agency Vinnova<\/a>. And has multiple partners including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalmers.se\/en\/departments\/ims\/centres-collaborations\/electric%20aviation%20in%20Sweden\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Chalmers University<\/a>.\u00a0 Their goal is to apply the HET (Hunstable Electric Turbine) technology developed by Linear to real-world uses.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Origin and Vision of Linear Labs\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yqIKZGx-06Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>Swedish Partners<\/h4>\n<p>Anders Forslund, researcher at Chalmers in Gothenburg, Sweden, leads the development project Elise. \u00a0\u201cWe started a little later than they did in other countries but now we&#8217;re up and running probably faster than they do.\u00a0Intensive research is\u00a0ongoing around the world\u00a0for a transition from fossil fuels to electric power in aviation, especially in countries such as the United States, China and Germany.\u00a0It&#8217;s all about small start-up companies to big aircraft manufacturers like Boeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sverigesradio.se\/sida\/artikel.aspx?programid=83&amp;artikel=7124743\">S\u00f6ren Granath\u00a0 of Swedish Radio reports,<\/a> \u201cThe hope is that the\u00a0Swedish aviation industry will find its own niche in international competition.\u00a0First, to develop a plane that seats eight passengers for regional flights of up to 400 kilometers (248 miles).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14323\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/elise-ABTERY.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14323\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14323\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/elise-ABTERY-528x370.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14323\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elise, the Swedish regional airliner being developed with Abtery and American partner Linear Laboratories.\u00a0 Small, high-torque motors would fit design<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The schedule is nailed: First a fully electrical test plan in 2.5 years and in 2026 the first certified Swedish manufacturer plane will go in domestic traffic. For safety reasons, first a hybrid variant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;- With these 400 kilometers we will be able to cover about a third of domestic travel in Sweden.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Flux, Funding and the Future<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Having just earned $4.5 million from a seed funding round, Linear seems poised to develop its prototypes into production models.\u00a0 Linear claims their motor delivers more power on lower voltage, at least partly because it has a great flux density than more conventional motors.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Linear Labs Technology\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8gO60bt6rqk?start=2&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Most existing motors rely on radial flux or axial flux to generate power.\u00a0 Until a few decades ago, most motors ran a rotor (the part that spins around) inside a stator (the part that remains stationary).\u00a0 Then, English inventor Cedric Lynch redesigned the arrangement of magnets and coils onto two flat plates facing one another.\u00a0 This \u201cpancake\u201d type motor gave the advantage of mechanically increasing the torque possible.\u00a0 (Please note this is your much-challenged editor\u2019s attempt to make all this understandable for himself.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14326\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/A-Radial-Flux-Motor-B-Axial-Flux-Motor-10.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14326\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14326\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/A-Radial-Flux-Motor-B-Axial-Flux-Motor-10-528x289.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14326\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Comparison of radial flux (A) and axial flux (B) motors. HET combines both and adds its own twists<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Father and son Fred and Brad Hunstable have combined axial and radial flux (they may object to this gross oversimplification) and added the ability to vary the phasing of the motor.\u00a0 The HET, \u201cProduces twice the torque of a standard permanent magnet motor and three times the power and is more efficient while doing it,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/roadshow\/news\/linear-labs-electric-turbine-motor\/\">their interview with CNET<\/a>.\u00a0 The motor is essentially four rotors working in a complex flux generation system.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14325\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/linear-labs-hunstable-electric-motor-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14325\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14325\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/linear-labs-hunstable-electric-motor-4-528x513.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"513\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14325\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Linear Laboratoies&#8217; HET appears conventional, but internal flux paths are anything but.\u00a0 Motor can be fabricated on conventional motor production lines with conventional materials, though<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HET\u2019s performance with readily available materials will enable the use of low-cost metals rather than high-priced and often unobtainable rare earth minerals \u2013 many of which are controlled by China. Being able avoid the consequences of trade wars and have a steady supply chain are enviable benefits.\u00a0 The Hunstables plan some near-term applications and some longer-term possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company has been hard at work making prototypes of its motors for use in various industries. The first transportation application we\u2019ll probably see will be in micromobility \u2014 think scooters and e-bikes \u2014 as early as 2020, followed by electric cars in 2021.
