{"id":12273,"date":"2019-10-21T22:31:02","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T05:31:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12273"},"modified":"2019-10-21T22:31:02","modified_gmt":"2019-10-22T05:31:02","slug":"the-2019-personal-aircraft-design-academy-pada-trophy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/the-2019-personal-aircraft-design-academy-pada-trophy\/","title":{"rendered":"The 2019 Personal Aircraft Design Academy (PADA) Trophy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Honoring John Langford<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If one stays with a line of work long enough, one will accomplish mighty things.\u00a0 That\u2019s certainly true for John Langford, Chief Executive Officer for Aurora Flight Sciences.\u00a0 His decades-long career, start his decades-long career, starting at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and culminating his company partnering with Boeing, has explored almost every aeronautical discipline.\u00a0 For this perseverance, he was awarded the 2019 Personal Aircraft Design Academy (PADA) Trophy.<\/p>\n<p>Aurora Flight Sciences\u2019 Chief Technology Officer, Tom Clancy, was on hand at the 2019 Sustainable Aviation Symposium at UC Berkeley to accept the award for Langford.\u00a0 Clancy has worked with Langford since their MIT days, building and flying several human-powered aircraft, including the 1974 Daedalus.\u00a0 That aircraft flew the 74 miles from Crete to Sicily over the Mediterranean Sea, still the human-powered distance record. \u00a0He and Langford went on to design, build, and fly an astonishing range of aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Putting solar cells on Daedalus gave them a pilotless airplane that could stay up for extended periods.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0This led to <a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/eas-ix-aurora-flight-science-set-records-without-pilots\/\">larger machines with even greater endurance<\/a>.\u00a0 Here we get to see Dr. Langford and Clancy in the same video.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ODYSSEUS Aurora Flight Sciences &amp; Boeing Extreme Duration Aircraft\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rvPnMBjduao?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Aurora delved into not only advanced aerodynamics, but instrumentation and sensing systems that enabled flight in blind flight conditions that truly are blind.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ONR AACUS -
