{"id":12277,"date":"2019-10-24T09:52:37","date_gmt":"2019-10-24T16:52:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12277"},"modified":"2019-10-24T09:52:37","modified_gmt":"2019-10-24T16:52:37","slug":"volocopters-short-flight-over-the-bay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/volocopters-short-flight-over-the-bay\/","title":{"rendered":"Volocopter\u2019s Short Flight Over the Bay"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Volocopter air taxi flies over Singapore\u2019s Marina Bay<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Volocopter flew the latest version of its two-seat sky taxi, the 2X, on a two-minute, 1.5-kilometer excursion around and over Singapore\u2019s Marina Bay on October 22.\u00a0 This short flight, surrounded by massive, futuristic skyscrapers, highlighted the controllability of the small machine and its ability to use minimal infrastructure, taking off from and landing on a simple grass plot.<\/p>\n<p>Florian Reuter, CEO of Volocopter, applauded the flight\u2019s verification of his vision.\u00a0 \u201cThe flight today in Singapore was the most advanced Volocopter flight yet and the piloted flight was as stable as ever. At the same time, we are showcasing a prototype of our full-scale VoloPort Infrastructure, allowing for a realistic demonstration of air taxi boarding and maintenance services. Never before have people been this close to experiencing what Urban Air Mobility in the city of tomorrow will feel like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Volocopter air taxi flies over Singapore&#039;s Marina Bay\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QhNJUyT3HI8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Perfect for commuting on the island, Volocopters would enable transit across the 50-kilometer (31-mile) width and 27-kilometer (17-mile) north-to-south span.\u00a0 It would make access to the offshore islands an easy trip.\u00a0 Landing atop Singapore\u2019s tallest buildings would be more taxing than surmounting its highest geographical point, Bukit Timah Hill\u00a0at 182\u00a0meters (597\u00a0feet).<\/p>\n<p>The October 22 flight was the last in a series of \u201cdemanding test series to verify and validate the ability of Volocopter air taxis to flyover the area.\u201d\u00a0 Results were signed off by the Ministry of Transport (MOT), the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), and the Economic Development Board (EDB), who will also oversee future efforts.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"German firm hopes to debut flying taxis in Singapore as early as 2021\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yeKFFiFbmpk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ho Yuen Sang, Director (Aviation Industry) from CAAS validates that thought. \u201cSince late 2018, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has been working with Volocopter to facilitate this flight in Singapore. The Volocopter team went through a series of stringent evaluations to ensure that all the necessary safety requirements were met before the flight was allowed to take place. By working closely with companies such as Volocopter, we hope to facilitate innovations for beneficial uses whilst ensuring aviation and public safety,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14544\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/volocopter-air-taxi-voloport-03-1024x683.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14544\" class=\"wp-image-14544 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/volocopter-air-taxi-voloport-03-1024x683-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14544\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Singapore&#8217;s prototype Voloport includes a 2X on display<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Voloports will be an integral part of developing this enterprise.\u00a0 Florian Reuter, CEO of Volocopter, explains, \u201cThere are three major aspects that need to be in place for urban air mobility to become reality: the aircraft, the infrastructure, and the necessary regulation for both. Standing inside the VoloPort makes Urban Air Mobility feel extremely real and demonstrates that air taxi operations are not a faraway future, but very feasible to achieve within the next two to five years.
