{"id":12286,"date":"2019-11-04T10:48:37","date_gmt":"2019-11-04T17:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12286"},"modified":"2019-11-04T10:48:37","modified_gmt":"2019-11-04T17:48:37","slug":"toni-roths-c42-hybrid-range-extender","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/toni-roths-c42-hybrid-range-extender\/","title":{"rendered":"Toni Roth\u2019s C42 Hybrid Range Extender"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Comco Ikarus C42 is a popular ultralight aircraft in Europe, now being tested with a unique hybrid power system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/toniroth.com\/flugschule\/\">Anton (Toni) Roth<\/a> was an early adapter, putting small electric motors on a variety of ultralight aircraft over the past several years.\u00a0 These have been the lightest of machines powered by Eck\/Geiger motors, controllers and batteries.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Towing with ATOS Electric-Trike\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9h8MTMx-ToQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>His latest is a hybrid conversion of the popular C42, two-seat ultralight which normally flies on a Rotax engine, as do most European ultralight craft.\u00a0 In this case, Roth has mounted a Swiss single-cylinder four-stroke engine behind the pilot\u2019s seats driving a Geiger generator which in turn powers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geigerengineering.de\/avionik\/neue-entwicklungen\">Geiger HP-55D motor<\/a> on the nose, delivering up to 73 kilowatts (97 horsepower) and providing a rate of climb of five to six meters per second (584 to 1181 feet per minute) \u2013 an impressive performance for small aircraft.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14582\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ikarus-c42-hybrid-engine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14582\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14582\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ikarus-c42-hybrid-engine-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Helvenco engine mounted behind pilots balance major weights near center of balance<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The engine, sipping a mere five liters (1.32 U. S. gallons) per hour, enables the generator to deliver a constant 30 kilowatts. At least partly because of its abstemious character, the motor allows long endurance even at ultralight regulated fuel quantities.\u00a0 Along with an electric variable-pitch propeller that Roth hopes to test soon, the company has a goal of remaining aloft for at least five hours.<\/p>\n<p>Roth and his team tested several different two-stroke and four-stroke engines before settling on the current unit from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helvenco.com\/\">Swiss engine company Helvenco<\/a>.\u00a0 The single-cylinder engine produced at the company in Burgdorf near Bern displaces 250 cc and weighs only 36 kilograms (80 pounds).\u00a0 The video below is in German, although most of it is highly understandable overall.\u00a0 Parts of it have the ambient sound of the powerplants in operation, although much of the natural sound is obscured by music such that one expects Shaft to be flying the airplane.\u00a0 Please, manufacturers, give us actual sounds, not funk.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"C 42 Hybrid-Erprobungstr\u00e4ger\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WKeGQXyypkg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Comco Ikarus has sold over 1,400 of the CS42 models in all configurations, so the hybrid option may have a significant market, especially in Europe.\u00a0 It\u2019s lighter than U.
