Whitney, Collins Aerospace, United Technologies Research Center \u201cand certain as-yet-unannounced external institutions.\u201d\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/runwaygirlnetwork.com\/2019\/04\/23\/will-dash-8-hybrid-electric-x-plane-hit-the-spot-for-green-aviation\/\">The organization\u2019s Project 804.<\/a> A hybrid-electric \u201cX-plane\u201d intended to reduce aircraft noise, improve fuel consumption, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and cut airline operating and maintenance costs.<\/p>\n<p>As exciting as the prospect sounds, the new aircraft probably won\u2019t draw a lot of attention on the ramp.\u00a0 It will look pretty much like a DeHavilland Dash 8-400, a short-to-mid range passenger hauler at just about every commercial airport in the world.\u00a0 It is, indeed, a Dash 8, converted to a new and innovative hybrid-turbine power system.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14642\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/project-804-at-Paris-Air-Show.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14642\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14642\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/project-804-at-Paris-Air-Show-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14642\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Project 804 displayed at this year&#8217;s Paris Air Show<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Entering service in 1984 as the Dash 8-100 carrying 37 passengers, the airplane went through different owners and models, reaching today\u2019s 400 series that can haul up to 92 passengers.\u00a0 DeHavilland delivered 1,258 of all models as of March 31, 2019.\u00a0 Its ubiquity and solid reputation in service would lead to extending its service with even more reliable powerplants than the turbines pulling it along for the last 35 years.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Meet Project 804\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vnri47dx7bY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u201cDisrupts From Within\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>\u201c904\u201d is the straight-line mileage between Montreal and the Collins Aerospace facility in Rockford, Illinois.\u00a0 There, UTAP will invest $50 million in a high-voltage laboratory called \u201cThe Grid,\u201d a test bed for future electric power plants of up to one megawatt. \u00a0Their first project will re-engine and fly a Dash 8-100 with a \u201ctwo-megawatt class hybrid-electric propulsion system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12301\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/project-804-propulsion-architecture-528x83.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"95\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/project-804-propulsion-architecture-528x83.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/project-804-propulsion-architecture-300x47.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/project-804-propulsion-architecture.jpg 730w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With a tight timeline, things take on a hectic pace typical of a \u201cstartup-like organization\u201d that, \u201cdisrupts from within.\u201d\u00a0 The projects will reflect what can be quickly accomplished through the use of existing materials and components driven by experienced workers.\u00a0 The hybrid power system is probably typical of what we can expect.<\/p>\n<p>United Technologies reports in a white paper, \u201cIts configuration will consist of an engine optimized for cruise efficiency augmented by a battery-powered electric motor to assist during the missions\u2019 20-minute take off and climb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Project-804-mission-profile.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14643\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Project-804-mission-profile-528x265.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe engine and electric motor will each generate about 1 megawatt of power in a parallel hybrid configuration. While the battery cells are off-the-shelf, the packaging and battery management system (BMS) are custom-designed for efficiency and to meet necessary safety requirements. This approach could be suitable for a clean-sheet regional design as well as a retrofitted option for existing airframes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Project 804: How It Works\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HDEJNbyCLR8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Pushing an aggressive schedule, UTAP already has a Dash 8 and is working through the preliminary design process, according to UTAP executive director Jason Chua.\u00a0 He foresees a first flight in late 2021 \u2013 ambitious but doable.<\/p>\n<p>Although it will look familiar, the 804 Dash 8 will sound and perform differently.\u00a0 Collins Aerospace Kelly Ortberg reports, \u201cOur internal UTC studies indicate that commercial electric and hybrid electric propulsion could reduce aircraft noise by up to 85 percent, can improve fuel consumption by up to 40 percent, can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 20 percent and reduce airline operating and maintenance costs by up to 20 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Future Disruptions<\/h4>\n<p>The UTAP lab will have four independent modular electric power systems labs to be fully operational by 2021.\u00a0 The 25,000 square foot facility will design and test hybrid-electric propulsion technologies for next-generation business, commercial, military, and urban air mobility aircraft.\u00a0 Evoking the spirit of a startup, things should happen quickly and with the assurance that great experience provides.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fproject-804-turns-turboprop-into-hybrid%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Uniting Technologies United Technologies, an aerospace leader, expands its role as United Technologies Advanced Projects (UTAP), uniting Pratt &amp; Whitney, Collins Aerospace, United Technologies Research Center \u201cand certain as-yet-unannounced external institutions.\u201d\u00a0 The organization\u2019s Project 804.
