{"id":12303,"date":"2019-11-24T22:16:48","date_gmt":"2019-11-25T05:16:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12303"},"modified":"2019-11-24T22:16:48","modified_gmt":"2019-11-25T05:16:48","slug":"air-race-e-leaps-forward-with-eight-teams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/air-race-e-leaps-forward-with-eight-teams\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Race E Leaps Forward with Eight Teams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The public got a glimpse of Air Race E at this year\u2019s Dubai Air Show.\u00a0 Jeff Zaltman, CEO of Air Race E and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbus.com\/innovation\/open-innovation\/airbus-upnext.html\">Sandra Bour-Schaeffer, head of XO Airbus Demonstrators<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/airracee.com\/worlds-first-electric-race-plane-unveiled-at-dubai-airshow\/\">pulled the wraps on Team Condor&#8217;s converted Cassutt racer<\/a> &#8211; one of eight teams entering the fray.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14655\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-sandra-bour-zaltmann.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14655\" class=\"wp-image-14655\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-sandra-bour-zaltmann.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"393\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeff Zaltman and Sandra Bour-Schaeffer display Team Condor&#8217;s highly modified Cassutt racer<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Race E is an update of the classic small aircraft races held following World War II, and many of the airplanes in the upcoming events will be re-motored and redesigned versions of these craft.\u00a0 Formula 1 racing has not changed much since its 1947 inception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Reno Air Races Formula 1 2019\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-CqqwYBJu3w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Most air small air racers relied on the Continental C-85 engine, mildly uprated and turning faster than it did in Aeronca Champions or Piper Cubs.\u00a0 Formula E is the first major change and new technology in the field in over 70 years.<\/p>\n<p>With the advent of Air Race E, designers are encouraged to create new machines and rethink the means of propulsion.\u00a0 At least eight organizations are working on new or re-imagined aircraft, and at least two have new power systems.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Eight Contenders<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Team Condor<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Since 1979, Andrew Chadwick raced White Lightning, a highly-modified Cassutt aircraft.\u00a0 He donated the well-traveled airplane to Team Condor, whose leader, Martyn Wiseman and his crew converted it to a \u201cfully-electric racing machine.\u00a0 Its Contra-Electric twin motors and contra-rotating propellers should be able to pull White Lightning to 300 mph.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14654\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-DAS19-Day01-Air-Race-E-Aircraft-Reveal-08.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14654\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14654\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-DAS19-Day01-Air-Race-E-Aircraft-Reveal-08-528x369.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"369\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Team Condor craft is modified Cassutt racer, popular in Formula 1 competition<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>University of Nottingham<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>According to the school, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/airracee.com\/spotlight-on-uons-richard-glassock\/\">Richard Glassock is a Research Fellow in Hybrid Electric Propulsion Systems<\/a> for Aircraft at the University of Nottingham Faculty of Engineering. He is working with Air Race E and leading the project to build the world\u2019s first electric race plane through the University of Nottingham\u2019s Beacons of Future Propulsion program.\u201d\u00a0 Richard leads Nottingham\u2019s Aerospace Technology Center in the UK as part of its \u00a313M (about 16,640,000 USD) Propulsion Futures Beacons of Excellence research program.\u00a0 Richard assisted with the development of White Lightning in addition to his academic duties.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14657\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-Richard-Glassock-e1563875142170.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14657\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14657\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-Richard-Glassock-e1563875142170-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14657\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Glassock working on Cassutt racer at Nottingham University&#8217;s Aerospace Technology Center<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>Allways Air Racing<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Casey Erickson, a Reno Air Race biplane class pilot, is starting with a SnoShoo SR1.1, a conventional Reno racer, modifying the wing to make it faster around the tight turns on the Formula E course, and converting to electric power.\u00a0 She add the team has \u201cdone more computational analysis than probably anyone else has to ensure good air flow and minimal drag for our entire aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14658\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-snoshoo-racer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14658\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14658\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-snoshoo-racer-528x301.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14658\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Team Allways Racing&#8217;s Shoshoo SR-1<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>Blue -BETA Racing<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Already flying an electric vertical takeoff and landing machine, Kyle Clark, CEO and chief test pilot of BETA Technologies says, \u201cWe see the Air Race E series as a design accelerant that will push the development of advanced concepts while showcasing the amazing engineers and thought leaders working in this space.\u201d\u00a0 Relying on experts in electric power and composites, his \u201cground up\u201d design will look almost sailplane-like from the front, taking advantage of the slenderness enabled by electric power plants.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14659\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-blue-beta.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14659\" class=\"wp-image-14659 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-blue-beta-528x377.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"377\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Team Blue-Beta has yet to reveal its e-racer, but it come from the company that produced this eVTOL machine<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>Team Hangar-1<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Asked what might surprise people about his team\u2019s design, the company\u2019s CEO, Adrian Schmer, explains, \u201cThe aircraft will get technical features from completely different designs. A glider canopy mixed with a \u201cPitts\u201d throttle quadrant and tailwheel from inline skates.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14664\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-hangar-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14664\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14664\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-hangar-1-528x528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"528\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14664\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hangar-1 engine repair in foreground frames Airbus Beluga spacecraft carrier taxiing by<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Based at facilities in Oldenburg-Hatten and Leer-Papenburg in northern Germany, Team Hanger-1, named in conjunction with their main sponsor Flugwerft Hangar-1 GmbH, is led by the company\u2019s CEO Adrian Schmer, an SEP and aerobatics instructor.\u00a0 A team of \u201cself-confessed aviation junkies, \u201d Eline Tjaden, Chris H\u00f6land, Jakob M\u00f8ller and Ingo Seidl, work on the craft\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Team M\u00f6bius<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Team M\u00f6bius, based in Fort Worth, Texas, is led by Carl Copeland, a serial entrepreneur and CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/muzmotion.com\/\">M\u03bcZ Motion, a robotics firm.<\/a>\u00a0 Their airplane, under development and awaiting a name, will be powered by a new type of smaller, lighter motor.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14660\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-Muz-motor.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14660\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14660\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/air-race-e-Muz-motor-528x334.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14660\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">the Muz Field Modulation Motor promises somewhat unbelievable size and perfromance<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Copeland claims their Field Modulation Motor \u201cis constructed of 100% recycled or recyclable materials. Even the magnets will be from reclaimed and recycled materials. The mining, processing and manufacturing of the minerals used in permanent magnets are very energy intensive and toxic to the environment. Our use of recycled material will have a significant impact on the carbon and chemical footprint of the plane. Similar precautions will be taken in the development and use of the batteries and electronics.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Team NL<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cTeam NL\u201d from the Netherlands and led by Rick Boerma are a design team made up of university students. They will work from \u201cscratch.\u201d\u00a0 Rick said, \u201cTo design, build, test and fly a new aircraft for the Air Race E next year is going to be a seriously difficult challenge, but one we are ready to take head on. Time is ticking, but we are excited to get started.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14661\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"wp-caption-text\">Team NL&#8217;s entry is orange, the Netherland&#8217;s national color<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Team Outlaw<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>With pilot and Team Leader Scott Holmes in the cockpit, the Canadians are adapting their 1993 Cassutt to be able to fly with electric power, asking, \u201cDo you think we\u2019ll be able to fit enough batteries under the cowl for 8 laps? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grepow.com\/page\/company.html\">Here\u2019s a few of\u00a0Grepow\u2019s best getting stress tested<\/a> by the world\u2019s most intelligent (and probably youngest) electric airplane research group in silicon valley.\u201d\u00a0 The pouch-type cells are otherwise unidentified as to chemistry or output.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14662\" style=\"width: Scramasaxe<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Based at A\u00e9rodrome de Cuers-Pierrefeu in the south east of France, Team Scramasaxe is led by Eric de Barberin-Barberini, a former fighter pilot who has set five href=\"https:\/\/www.theengineer.co.uk\/teams-worlds-first-electric-air-race\/\">The craft features innovations including a tricycle landing gear<\/a> incorporating a retractable front wheel, while the air foil will be modified to sustain speeds as high as 500 kilometers per hour.<\/p>\n<h4>More to Follow<\/h4>\n<p>With eight teams developing new technology to gain the &#8220;racer&#8217;s
