With a single pilot and short duration, this is an excellent proving ground for new electric power train technologies.<\/p>\n<p>According to the RAES, \u201cThe design rules were based on Air Race E, but widened to encourage a broader range of configurations. Air Race E rules include a minimum empty weight of 227 kg, a maximum motor power of 150 kW, fixed pitch propellers, a minimum wing area of 6.132 square meters and a fixed main undercarriage. Air Race E also demands that all motors have the same thrust line. This limitation was removed from the RAeS competition to encourage wider innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14690\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/MSG-computer-games-rendering.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14690\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14690\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/MSG-computer-games-rendering-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rendering of Madison Square Gardens in 2016 shows crowd potential for cyber games similar to computer-based air races<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyer.co.uk\/virtual-timed-lap-decides-electric-race-winners\/\">According to <em>Flyer <\/em>magazine<\/a>, racers had to fly around a five-kilometer (3.1 miles) course, staying within high and low limits and not cutting any horizontal boundaries.\u00a0 \u201cThe results were announced at the Royal Aeronautical Society\u2019s annual Light Aircraft Design Conference on Electrifying General Aviation on 18 November. \u00a0Awards were presented to the top three by Steve Slater, CEO of the Light Aircraft Association.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An international lineup of 15 contestants pushed those rules, already more flexible than those for Air Race E, to their absolute limits. They came up with configurations featuring single to four motors, propelling monoplanes, biplanes and triplanes (or three-wing configurations).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Iontrepid <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Winner Iontrepid showed a maximum speed of 330 knots (380 mph).\u00a0 It is able to take high-G turns without losing speed, despite its high-aspect ratio flying wing configuration \u2013 more something one would seen on a sailplane. Its pusher motor and retractable nosewheel, designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.x-aerodynamics.com\/\">Cameron Garner from x-aerodynamics<\/a> of Timaru in New Zealand, minimizes drag \u201cwith the short fuselage, and the rear propeller ingests the fuselage boundary layer. Wing sections were tailored to increase laminar flow. \u00a0X-aerodynamics develop flight-realistic aircraft models for the x-plane simulator.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14691\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ionintrepid-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14691\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14691\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ionintrepid-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14691\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Iontrepid won first place in England&#8217;s Light Aircraft Design competition emulating Air Race E rules<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Showing the firm&#8217;s ability to provide realistic flight simulation, they gift users with two freeware samples, one for the <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.x-plane.org\/index.php?\/files\/file\/45373-aerobask-robin-dr401-cdi-155\/\">Aerobask-Robin-DR401<\/a> shown below, and one for the Aerobask <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.x-plane.org\/index.php?\/files\/file\/41357-lancair-legacy-fg\/\">Lancair Legacy FG XP11.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"X-Plane 11 - The Best Freeware Plane Ever: Reviewing Aerobask Robin DR401 CDI 155\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I3fcwFIPOMs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Garner won the contest\u2019s first prize of an aerodynamic analysis (CFD) of their configuration, provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/airshaper.com\/\">Airshaper in Belgium<\/a>.\u00a0 The winners think this will give a rigorous comparison of the design and a high-resolution analysis of the anticipate real-world performance.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Airplane design #1 - A Peugeot Designer&#039;s Vision\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RLHMN7B0ax8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Software such as that from Airshaper can predict performance from designs that otherwise might be too risky for flight tests without in-depth analysis of their characteristics &#8211; such as the Peugeot designer&#8217;s unique approach shown above.<\/p>\n<p>This use of CFD and on-screen performance testing will enable designers to \u201cwring out\u201d designs in a safe setting and one can foresee large scale \u201cair racing\u201d on screen in venues like those in Madison Square Garden that attract huge crowds of cyber-gaming fans.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Sparrowhawk R-1<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Second- place Sparrowhawk R-1 features a triple wing configuration with twin, wing mounted motors and a V-tail. \u00a0It\u2019s mainly of metal construction designed for easy home-building.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14696\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/sparrowhawk-r-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14696\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14696\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/sparrowhawk-r-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14696\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sparrowhawk, powered by two motors and controlled by three wing surfaces, is intended for home-building<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>AFormX<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Third place AFormX fielded the eponymous AFormX, featuring three motors much like a single seat Eviation Alice.\u00a0 \u00a0AFormX contracts flight testing for Pipistrel, and builds virtual reality flight simulators.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14695\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/aformx-r.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14695\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14695\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/aformx-r.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AFormX has three motors in a configuration much like that of Eviation&#8217;s Alice.\u00a0 Wing-tip motors are intended to reduce tip vortices<\/p><\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AFormX model Racer (electric) - R(e)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7ZDWPlWHg8c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
