C. were not awakened by the overhead passage of a DeHavilland Beaver Tuesday morning.\u00a0 The electrically-powered floatplane lifted off at around 8:30 a. m. and zipped by quietly, its Magnix motor humming and only its four-bladed propeller disturbing the air.\u00a0 The full-flight video below has the airplane &#8220;taxiing&#8221; for the first four minutes.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"First flight of Harbour Air&#039;s all-electric DHC-2 Beaver\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/X_dnAD5TD-E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Harbour Air took the daring step of publicly test flying an old but spiffily refurbished airplane with a new motor, the paint scheme revealing the location of all major electrical components.\u00a0 Even more daring, <a href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/news\/local-news\/harbour-air-boss-to-test-pilot-worlds-first-electric-commercial-aircraft\">Greg McDougall, founder and CEO of Harbour Air piloted the flight<\/a>.\u00a0 Talk about faith in your product.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Engine\/Motor Swap<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Beaver\u2019s original Pratt &amp; Whitney R-985 engine produced 450 horsepower from its 682 pounds \u2013 relatively light for its day.\u00a0 (It was developed in 1929 \u2013 two years after Lindbergh\u2019s flight \u2013 and put into production in 1930.) \u00a0Its dual magnetos were a nod to redundancy.\u00a0 The Magni500 weighs 297 pounds and produces up to 750 horsepower \u2013 relatively heavy for its output in electric motor terms.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14723\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/harbour-air-eplane-e-flugzeug-electric-aircraft-2019-04-min-888x444.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14723\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14723\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/harbour-air-eplane-e-flugzeug-electric-aircraft-2019-04-min-888x444-528x264.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New mechanics won&#8217;t have trouble finding major components<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Pouring 20 gallons per hour through the R-985\u2019s carburetor, though, would be the heaviest part of this comparison.\u00a0 At $2.31 per liter in Vancouver (highest in British Columbia) and with 4.55 liters per imperial gallon, fuel would cost $10.47 per Imperial gallon.\u00a0 (It takes 3.97 liters per U. S. gallon.\u00a0 Even averaging $2.00 per liter for flying clubs and self-service providers, a 100LL-fueled Beaver would go through $158.80 for 20 U. S gallons.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Comparing Fossil Fuel to Electrical Costs<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.bchydro.com\/accounts-billing\/rates-energy-use\/electricity-rates\/residential-rates\/generation-rates-co2-comparison.html\">According to B. C. Hydro<\/a>, average charging rates would be 10.29 Canadian cents per kilowatt hour, with 92-percent hydro generated.\u00a0 Their comparisons with costs and the means of electrical generation in other countries are interesting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ww.electrek.co\/2019\/12\/10\/world-first-electric-seaplane-takes-flight\/\">Electrek reported,<\/a> \u201c[Harbour Air] didn\u2019t confirm the energy capacity of the battery pack installed in the plane, but they did say that it weighs &#8216;one tonne&#8217; (2,200 lbs). At an energy density of 300 Wh\/kg, it would mean a 300 kWh battery pack.\u00a0 That would mean it costs $30.87 Canadian to charge the pack \u2013 a considerable savings over fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Electric seaplane takes flight\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1-RJeg7D-Jo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Electrek<\/em> adds, \u201cMagniX CEO Roei Ganzarski told CTV News: \u2018<em>The range is not an issue for them. Today\u2019s batteries can provide them exactly the range that they need to operate.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Maintenance and Fuel Burn<\/h4>\n<p>Ganzarski further illuminated,<em> \u201cIf you look at a five-year lifecycle of operating a traditional gas engine, together with all the significant maintenance that\u2019s required for that kind of engine because they\u2019re so complex, and all of the fuel that\u2019s burned, it is significantly cheaper to convert and operate an electric aircraft.\u201d\u00a0 <\/em>Consider that the Pratt &amp; Whitney engine has not been produced since 1953 and that most parts, outside of new old stock items found in dusty parts bins, are provided by after-market manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>Lower noise will be a great benefit to travelers and residents near Harbor Air\u2019s many landing zones.\u00a0 Lower operational costs will directly benefit the air line and maybe show up in lower ticket prices \u2013 encouraging more travelers.\u00a0 It\u2019s a way to keep old birds airborne.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Felectric-beaver-flies-in-vancouver-b-c%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Residents of Vancouver, B.
