{"id":12323,"date":"2019-12-21T23:39:19","date_gmt":"2019-12-22T06:39:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12323"},"modified":"2019-12-21T23:39:19","modified_gmt":"2019-12-22T06:39:19","slug":"accell-a-mostly-british-coalition-going-for-300-mph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/accell-a-mostly-british-coalition-going-for-300-mph\/","title":{"rendered":"ACCELL: A (Mostly) British Coalition Going for 300 MPH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rolls-Royce is perhaps the epitome of Britishness, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rolls-royce.com\/about\/our-history.aspx\">going back to 1904,<\/a> when Henry Royce, founder of a successful mechanical\/electrical business, met Charles Rolls, a successful car dealer in London.\u00a0 Together, the founded the company which came to be known as Rolls-Royce.\u00a0 By 1906, their Silver Ghost was known as \u201cthe best car in the world.\u201d\u00a0 That quality was inherent in their first aircraft engine, the Eagle, \u201cproviding some half of the total horsepower used in the air war by the allies.\u201d\u00a0 It provided the power in 1919 for the first direct flight across the Atlantic and the first flight from England to Australia \u2013 both in Vickers Vimy aircraft.\u00a0 This led to racing success, with early V-12 engines by R-R powering Schneider Cup racers in the 1930\u2019s, leading to the Merlin, which powered Hawker Hurricanes, Vickers Spitfires, and P-51 Mustangs.\u00a0 Their current ACCELL project hopes to continue that tradition.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14750\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/accell-1914-Eagle-Aero-Engine-prod.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14750\" class=\"wp-image-14750\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/accell-1914-Eagle-Aero-Engine-prod-528x252.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"287\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WWI Eagle aircraft engine production line. R-R Eagles would power over 50 percent of allied craft in the Great War<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rolls-Royce would love to have another round of victories to continue their successes, and now are unveiling something that has been seen mostly in computer renderings for the last several years.\u00a0 Others, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yasa.com\/products\/\">YASA (Yokeless and Segmented Armature) axial flux motors<\/a>, \u201cAre smaller and lighter than any other\u00a0motors\u00a0in their class due to our more efficient use of key magnetic and structural materials. The\u00a0YASA\u00a0(Yokeless and Segmented Armature)\u00a0motor\u00a0topology also significantly reduces manufacturing complexity, making the\u00a0motors\u00a0ideally suited to automated volume production,\u201d according to the company.\u00a0 Nothing could be more British than the motor\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soue.org.uk\/souenews\/issue9\/yasa.html\">Oxford pedigree, a product of research that company founder and Chief Technology Officer Tim Woolmer<\/a> performed at the University.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The P1E<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below, we see the result of work by Electroflight.\u00a0 They created the P1E, a special race plane with two YASA motors swinging counter-rotating propellers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14754\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Accell-P1e-with-English-Electric-Lightning.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14754\" class=\"wp-image-14754\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Accell-P1e-with-English-Electric-Lightning-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14754\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Electroflight P1E with English Electric Lightning fighter &#8211; both have two power units<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Electroflight recently partnered with Ansys, an American software firm (with nine offices in Great Britain) contributing high-level visualization to the design process.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to Design the World\u2019s Fastest All-Electric Airplane\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5sRyqpC7Kgk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be using ANSYS Fluent as we continue work on Rolls-Royce\u2019s ACCEL Electrical Project, as we help produce the world\u2019s fastest all-electric airplane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Extract from FullyCharged episode of Electroflight showing Mini Test Rig\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j67z0BxWGm0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACCELL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Going beyond the P1E, ACCELL (Accelerating the Electrification of Flight \u2013 a messy acronym) will be airborne in spring 2020,<a href=\"https:\/\/aviationweek.com\/business-aviation\/rolls-royce-unveils-all-electric-accel-aircraft\"> according to Aviation Week. \u00a0<\/a>Here are the project goals, with appropriately heroic music.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BdYqlPaPYAU<\/p>\n<p>Electroflight defines themselves as, \u201cThe leading supplier of world-class Energy Storage Systems in aviation and other related technologies.\u201d\u00a0 Working on a high-density energy package that puts three YASA motors in tandem to produce 500 horsepower.\u00a0 YASA explains that, \u201cEven during the record run the all-electric powertrain delivers power with 90% energy efficiency and of course zero emissions. (In comparison, a Formula 1 race car tops out at close to 50% energy efficiency).\u201d\u00a0 Because of the enormous torque involved, 400 Newton meters continuous per motor (297 foot-pounds), the motors can pull ACCELL along effortlessly, with a much lower noise level than petrol-fueled machines.<\/p>\n<p>According to Aviation Week, \u201cThe tail-sitter aircraft, which is based on a heavily modified version of the diesel-powered Nemesis NXT Big Frog sport racing aircraft, currently is being fitted with the [electric] propulsion system.\u00a0 Imagine it with half the noise.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"French Nemesis NXT &quot;BIG FROG&quot; Airracer -
