{"id":12338,"date":"2019-12-31T20:50:55","date_gmt":"2020-01-01T03:50:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12338"},"modified":"2019-12-31T20:50:55","modified_gmt":"2020-01-01T03:50:55","slug":"joby-and-uber-elevate-form-partnership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/joby-and-uber-elevate-form-partnership\/","title":{"rendered":"Joby and Uber Elevate Form Partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a new partnership agreement, Uber Elevate recently added Joby Aviation to its stable of aircraft companies which are to supply craft for its Urban Air Mobility program.\u00a0 Joby builds electric motors, 12 of which line the wing of NASA\u2019s X-57 Maxwell, with two larger motors for forward thrust when the small units are shut down.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\ud83d\udd34\ud83d\udc40\ud83d\udd34 Life At The Lab: The X-57 Maxwell\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_3qbonM1X7M?start=58&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This inventory of electric motors on the NASA project gives Joby a certain entr\u00e9e to interest from the Urban Air Mobility movement, and it\u2019s received that interest from Uber.\u00a0 Well financed in its own right, Joby has committed to meeting Uber\u2019s desire to have operating sky taxis in the air by 2023, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/2\/1\/16959698\/joby-aviation-evtol-100-million-investment\">reported by Andrew J. Hawkins in <em>The Verge<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We have written about Joby several times in the past, including this <a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/eas-viii-joby-motors-simple-complex-airframes\/\">2014 report<\/a> that includes an early rendition of the Maxwell project.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14794\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/joby-uber-CFD.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14794\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14794\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/joby-uber-CFD-528x259.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14794\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joby S4 computational fluid dynamic rendering of complex air flow around rotors<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Much has happened for Joby since then.\u00a0 Hawkins picked up the story in 2018. \u201cJoby is the brainchild of inventor JoeBen Bevirt, who started the company in 2009. The company operated in relative obscurity until 2018, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/2\/1\/16959698\/joby-aviation-evtol-100-million-investment\">Joby announced<\/a>\u00a0it had raised a surprising $100 million from a variety of investors, including the venture capital arms of Intel, Toyota, and JetBlue. The money helped finance development of the company\u2019s air taxi prototype, which has been conducting test flights at Joby\u2019s private airfield in Northern California.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawkins quoted from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-02-01\/air-taxi-startup-joby-has-a-working-prototype-and-a-fresh-100m\">Bloomberg report<\/a> about two reporters allowed to see an otherwise secret test flight on Woodpecker Ridge, high above nearby Santa Cruz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pilot managed a vertical takeoff, 15 minutes of flight in a 15-mile loop, and a safe landing. Powered by electric motors and sophisticated control software, the taxi performs like a cross between a drone and a small plane, able to zip straight up on takeoff and then fly at twice the speed of a helicopter while making about as much noise as a swarm of superbees. Bevirt says thousands of these sky cabs will one day shuttle people around cities, soaring above the conventional traffic below.\u201d\u00a0 This surprising report didn\u2019t seem to elicit a great deal of curiosity from the press, but recent news suggests it enticed other investors into looking more closely.\u00a0 A video at that time suggested what a two-seat, Joby sky taxi might enable.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hYWcoNXq38M<\/p>\n<p>Joby has since become the seventh partner of Uber for their Elevate program.\u00a0 Hawkins, in a December article, explained, \u201cUnlike the dozens of other companies that are currently building electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, Joby has kept much of its project under wraps. The few renderings that are out there show a plane-drone hybrid with 12 rotors and room in the cabin for four passengers, though a spokesperson previously cautioned that what Joby is working on now is \u2018entirely new.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A multi-year contract between Uber and Joby promises \u201curban air taxi service in select markets.\u201d\u00a0 Joby will supply and operate its craft, and \u201cUber will provide air traffic control help, landing pad construction, connections to ground transportation, and, of course, its ride-share network reconfigured to allow customers to hail flying cars rather than regular, terrestrial ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One wonders how Uber\u2019s air traffic control help will interface with plans from NASA and the FAA.\u00a0 And other sky taxi firms, for that matter.\u00a0 Joby will join Uber\u2019s other partners in providing aircraft for the project \u2013 all with significantly different configurations.\u00a0 The others include Jaunt, Embraer, Pipistrel, Karem Aircraft, Aurora Flight Sciences, and Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Hawkins reports, \u201cBevirt, Joby Aviation\u2019s CEO, said he believes air taxis will enable people to get to their destinations \u2018five-times faster than driving, reduce urban congestion and accelerate the shift to sustainable modes of transit.\u2019 In a statement, he said he was excited to join forces with Uber. Eric Allison, head of Elevate, praised Joby as \u2018a real technology leader whose vehicles aim to be designed to enable a safe, quiet, and affordable service for Uber Air riders.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Joby&#8217;s Growth<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The image below shows Joby&#8217;s work force today.\u00a0 Six years ago, when your editor was privileged to visit the Joby site, there were about a dozen engineers working on the then current project.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12339\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12339\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12339\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/joby-uber-lead-image-528x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/joby-uber-lead-image-528x200.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/joby-uber-lead-image-300x114.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/joby-uber-lead-image-768x291.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Today&#8217;s work force at Joby, much larger than the dozen engineers six years ago &#8211; with more to come<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The larger group today will grow, with Joby offering 142 openings in a wide range of engineering and technical area.\u00a0 Uber Elevate has\u00a0 12 openings, mostly in the bay area, but with one lucky research scientist in machine learning getting a spot in Paris.\u00a0 \u00a0Analysts have said the Sky Taxi business could lead to a $318 billion enterprise from 2020 t0 2040.\u00a0 Joby and Uber alone could account for a big part of that bright future.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fjoby-and-uber-elevate-form-partnership%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
