{"id":12353,"date":"2020-01-12T00:22:20","date_gmt":"2020-01-12T07:22:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12353"},"modified":"2020-01-12T00:22:20","modified_gmt":"2020-01-12T07:22:20","slug":"ces-2020-evtols-vie-for-attention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/ces-2020-evtols-vie-for-attention\/","title":{"rendered":"CES 2020: eVTOLs Vie for Attention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two electric Vertical Take Off and Landing (eVTOL) craft captured spectators\u2019 attention at the 2020 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas, Nevada.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/conventions\/ces\/push-toward-flying-taxis-ascends-at-ces-2020-1931507\/\">\u00a0Mick Akers of the Review-Journal<\/a> reported on Bell\u2019s Nexus 4EX, an updated prototype or the concept machine they showed last year, and the New Hyundai SA-1, unveiled as part of its partnership with Uber.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Bell Nexus 4EX<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Akers reports, \u201cAfter lighting up CES 2019 with its Nexus vertical takeoff and landing aircraft model, Bell returned this year with an updated prototype: the Nexus 4EX.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Bell Nexus air taxi could be Uber&#039;s first flying car (Live Stage Demo)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9Zwc4rQg45g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Unlike last year\u2019s hybrid version, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellflight.com\/products\/bell-nexus\">the 4EX will be fully electric<\/a>.\u00a0 Akers noted that, \u201cthe 4EX features four fan ducts, a reduction from the six shown with last year\u2019s model.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell promotes the benefit more marketers in the UAM segment are attacking \u2013 time.\u00a0 \u201cYour commute, transformed.\u00a0 Turn a 45-minute drive into a 10-minute flight. The safe, convenient Air Taxi is designed to let you make the most of your commute. Its sleek cabin offers a comfortable space for you to relax. Or work. Or socialize. All while saving your most precious resource: time.\u201d\u00a0 If you have a pressing need to fly at 150 mph within a 60-mile radius, the Nexus will get you there quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Akers added, \u201cBell brought along mini drone versions of the Nexus 4EX model and flew them around a miniature city to display how the system would work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mitch Synder, CEO and president of Bell, explains the more expansive plans that \u201csystem\u201d would entail.\u00a0 \u201cWith focus on the passenger experience, we revealed the technology and the vehicle that will revolutionize transportation in cities at CES 2019. This year we\u2019re demonstrating what governing, operating, working and living in a smart city will look like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smart aircraft and cities will require smart software, so Bell is partnering with Microsoft Azure on which the Bell AerOS system will run. \u00a0\u00a0According to Akers, \u201cThe service was created to manage fleet information, observe aircraft health and manage throughput of goods, product and predictive data and maintenance.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Hyundai SA-1<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Doubling down on Bell\u2019s four rotors (appropriate in Las Vegas), Hyundai\u2019s SA-1 features four tilt rotors and four lift rotors.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hyundai S-A1 Air Taxi first look at CES 2020\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Duplicating Bell\u2019s payload with four passengers and a pilot, the SA-1 is a largish 35 feet long, with its 7,000 pound gross weight carried not just on eight rotors, but wing of almost 50 feet.<\/p>\n<p>Close to the Bell\u2019s performance, the SA-1 cruises at 150 mph, with a top cruising speed of 180 mph possible. 100 percent-electric, the sky taxi can fly 63 miles.\u00a0 Most craft designed within Uber\u2019s parameters will have similar performance.<\/p>\n<p>Recently recruited after a 30-year career with NASA, Jaiwon Shin, executive vice president and head of Hyundai\u2019s Urban Mobility Division, says, \u201cOur vision of Urban Air Mobility will transform the concept of urban transportation. \u00a0We expect UAM to vitalize urban communities and provide more quality time to people.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Big Two Dominate, But Others Chime In<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The transformative possibilities of UAMs will not be possible without ground-based support systems.\u00a0 Bell and Hyundai had exhibits glorifying their approaches to meeting this need, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/nbaa.org\/aircraft-operations\/uas\/urban-air-mobility-dominates-headlines-ces-2020\/\">National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) comments<\/a> on this.<\/p>\n<p>Headlined, \u201cUrban Air Mobility Dominates Headlines at CES 2020,\u201d the organization explains that as a followup to its Nexus vehicles from 2019 and 2020, Bell showed off AerOS.\u00a0 \u00a0They describe is as,\u201cA digital fleet management mobility platform designed to assist eVTOL operators and cities with the complicated task of integrating UAM into the \u2018vertical landscape\u2019 over metropolitan areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a Bell Nexus City display, scale models of the 4EX and their autonomous pod transport cargo delivery vehicle lifted off and landed on rooftops as they would in reality, managed by the AerOS platform.<\/p>\n<p>Hyundai\u2019s approach is a bit more integrated.\u00a0 Their \u201csmart mobility solution\u201d includes the Hub, linking the S-A1 and other UAM aircraft to Hyundai\u2019s Purpose-Built Vehicle (PBV), an autonomous ground transporter offering customized onboard dining, retail or medical service options.\u00a0 The Hub, a modular system, provides docking not only for the aircraft, but for many types of PBVs that seem to be possible.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5NDSUwwbw4c<\/p>\n<p>Linked to the hub, a variety of PBVs global scale,\u201d said Uber Elevate\u2019s Eric Allison. \u201cCombining Hyundai\u2019s manufacturing muscle with Uber\u2019s technology platform represents a giant leap forward for launching a vibrant air taxi network in the coming years.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Uber Air<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Uber had presented three design concepts to manufacturers for aerial vehicles which would suit its Elevate program.\u00a0 Bell, Hyundai, and five others are working on delivering these vehicles so Uber Air can fly them commercially in Los Angeles, Dallas and Melbourne, Australia by 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Uber has been flying conventional helicopters in New York City as a demonstration of how the program would work.\u00a0 According to the NBAA, \u201cThe service would be carried out by creating skyports, which would be placed in high volume areas of cities, where up to 1,000 landings per hour could occur, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\/us\/en\/elevate\/\">Uber Elevate\u2019s website.<\/a>\u201d\u00a0 See also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\/elevate.pdf\">White Paper Uber released in 2016<\/a> on its anticipated part in urban mobility.<\/p>\n<p>Yolanka Wulff, Co Executive Director at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/community-air-mobility-initiative\/?msgConversationId=6042136185856417792&amp;msgOverlay=true&amp;lipi=urn%3Ali%3Apage%3Ad_flagship3_feed%3B4OhF5%2FflQfCLpBQ8ZRo32Q%3D%3D\">Community Air Mobility Initiative (CAMI)<\/a>, echos this idea.&#8221;Urban air mobility will have to be properly integrated into existing and future metro, bus, and other transit options for the full-trip time savings of taking to the air to be realized.&#8221;\u00a0 CAMI\u00a0is working with state and local jurisdictions to solve these issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More to Come<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This blog will
