{"id":12387,"date":"2020-02-08T17:21:45","date_gmt":"2020-02-09T00:21:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12387"},"modified":"2020-02-08T17:26:00","modified_gmt":"2020-02-09T00:26:00","slug":"apus-introduces-two-zero-emission-craft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/apus-introduces-two-zero-emission-craft\/","title":{"rendered":"APUS Introduces Two Zero Emission Craft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve written several times about structural batteries in this blog, from Dr. Emil Greenhalgh\u2019s early research at Imperial College to <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/carbon-fiber-and-the-grand-unified-airplane\/\">more recent efforts along the same line.<\/a>\u00a0 Interestingly, the basic idea remains very much the same over a decade.\u00a0 Energy storage would take place in a monocoque-type structure that could use carbon fiber, fiberglass, and even graphene as\u00a0 a structural material, while acting as a battery.\u00a0 Now some of this thinking is being applied to hydrogen storage in wings.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u201cTubeStruct\u2122\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apus-aero.com\/\">APUS, an aircraft design, structure and certification operation in Strausberg, Germany<\/a>, offering a full range of services including flight training.\u00a0 They recently announced two new craft, both featuring hydrogen fuel systems contained in a novel \u201c\u2026 \u00a0patented structurally integrated hydrogen storage system, known as TubeStruct\u2122.\u201d\u00a0 In the shadow drawings of the airplanes, the tubes appear as though they could double as redundant wing spars.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12388\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12388\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12388\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/APUS-i-2-tubes-768x432-528x297.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/APUS-i-2-tubes-768x432-528x297.png 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/APUS-i-2-tubes-768x432-300x169.png 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/APUS-i-2-tubes-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">APUS i-2\u00a0 will be comparable in dimensions and performance with more conventional light twins, but will be a zero-emission vehicle<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The i-2, a four-seat Normal-Category (CS-23) aircraft; and \u201cThe APUS i-6 is a technology demonstration platform with 2.8t MTOM (Mean Take-Off Mass).\u201d\u00a0 Both will be propelled by Siemens SP-70 motors (or whatever the Rolls-Royce equivalent will be)* \u2013 two on the -2 and \u201cup to seven\u201d on the I-6.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"APUS i-Planes\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/340387007?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The i-2 will contain a hydrogen fuel cell in its streamlined nose powering two electric motors on its wings.\u00a0 The fuel cell will draw H2 from TubeStruct in its wings, which, according to APUS, \u00a0\u201cpermits up to 25-percent higher specific energy density vs. standard hydrogen fuel tanks and 10X better energy density than fully-electric aircraft, all while avoiding the use of rare minerals that batteries do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dimensions and performance are similar to other light twins, with an empty weight of 1,300 kilograms (2,860 pounds) and a payload of 500 kilos (1,100 pounds).\u00a0\u00a0 It can carry its pilot and three passengers 800 kilometers (496 miles) at a true airspeed of 150 knots (172.5 mph).<\/p>\n<p>The i-6 is listed as a, \u201cTechnology demonstration platform optimized for distributed propulsion,\u201d\u00a0 and is, \u201cAlso designed for turbo-prop configuration.\u201d\u00a0 In its hydrogen configuration, it will include the TubeStruct containment vessels.\u00a0 Meant to allow varied systems the i-6 can be powered by a 500-700-kilowatt (670 \u2013 938 hp.) Diesel generator set for electrical power to the distributed motors.\u00a0 Alternatively, a Rolls-Royce M250-B17 turbine can produce 450 kilowatts (603 hp.) to turn a single propeller in the nose.\u00a0 In its depicted version, a 230-400 kW fuel cell could provide power for the seven electric motors that would provide added lift across the entire wing and horizontal tail.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12389\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12389\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12389\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/APUS-i-6_2048px-528x298.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/APUS-i-6_2048px-528x298.png 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/APUS-i-6_2048px-300x170.png 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/APUS-i-6_2048px-768x434.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">APUS i-6\u00a0will be more radical in its configuration, with distributed electric propulsion, variety of power sources<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Designers have thought out the many possibilities with care.\u00a0 APUS explains, \u201cThe large CG range granted by the canard permits an extremely high level of modularity and interchangeability for propulsion system components. The high-voltage and high-current electrical systems will be researched with a scientific approach.
