{"id":12408,"date":"2020-05-13T08:41:29","date_gmt":"2020-05-13T15:41:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12408"},"modified":"2020-06-10T20:45:47","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T03:45:47","slug":"voltaero-has-ambitious-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/voltaero-has-ambitious-plans\/","title":{"rendered":"VoltAero Has  Ambitious Plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VoltAero is a small French company that might succeed in electric flight where bigger firms have failed.\u00a0 Its hybrid-electric system marks an innovative path to quiet flight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airbus ventured into electric aviation with a four-motor conversion of the Colomban cri-Cri in 2010 and a clean-sheet craft, the E-Fan, a sleek, essentially ducted fan two-seater in 2015.\u00a0 Initially big plans for production of two and four seat variants bloomed &#8211; then withered.\u00a0 Airbus dropped plans for the personal electric airplane market and instead concentrated on at least three versions of Urban Air Mobility devices and a hybrid-electric demonstrator based on a BAE 146 airliner.\u00a0 This last project, the E-Fan X, was canceled recently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jean Botti was Chief Technology Officer for Airbus, and Didier Esteyne a test pilot for the Cri-Cri and E-Fan.\u00a0 Botti is now CEO of VoltAero: Esteyne its Technical Officer.\u00a0 VoltAero has ambitious plans for its hybrid electric future, and management experience to pull them off.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15038\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cassio-efan-didier-botti.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15038\" class=\"wp-image-15038 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cassio-efan-didier-botti-528x352.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">E-Fan following first flight. Didier Esteyne stands next to craft while Jean Botti stands nearest wingtip<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flying VoltAero\u2019s unique hybrid power system in a modified Cessna 337 \u201cSkymaster,\u201d VoltAero\u2019s test bed is similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ampaire.com\/\">Ampaire\u2019s EEL,<\/a> also testing with a modified 337 push-pull twin.\u00a0 While the Ampaire retains its front engine, VoltAire\u2019s Cassto 1 replaces the engine with a streamlined fairing containing a large battery pack.\u00a0 Its rear power module comprises a Nissan six-cylinder engine driving alternators that charge the batteries to power the three large motors turning the pusher propeller and\u00a0 two ENGINeUS 45 electric motors &#8211; one on the nose of each tailboom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"VoltAero hybrid-electric flight testing with the Cassio 1 testbed aircraft\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/X5mUGg6DFw4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The boom-mounted Safran units produce 45 kilowatts continuously and 70 kW for short bursts of power.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Preparing Cassio 1 for flight with ENGINeUS 45 electric motors\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ULtywS9NBY0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taxiing using wheel motors and taking off with only electrically-driven propellers provides quiet, good neighbor operation.\u00a0 Jean Botti explained operation and advantages at the Farnborough Air Show last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Flying without noise: VoltAero Cassio\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MUX8YlE5vzQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What&#8217;s Next?\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cassio 2, a sleek, three surface design, will amplify the performance and carrying capacity of the Cassio 1.\u00a0 <em>New Atlas<\/em> reports: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VoltAero ultimately plans on manufacturing 4-, 6- and 9-seat versions of the Cassio. Company president Jeffrey Lenorovitz tells us that the plane should have a top speed of 200 knots (370 km\/h or 230 mph) and a flight endurance of at least 3.5 hours.
