{"id":12416,"date":"2020-05-24T20:38:51","date_gmt":"2020-05-25T03:38:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12416"},"modified":"2020-06-10T20:42:45","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T03:42:45","slug":"gofly-prize-will-have-a-sequel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/gofly-prize-will-have-a-sequel\/","title":{"rendered":"GoFly Prize Will Have a Sequel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A well-produced video looking like a Christopher Nolan trailer for an upcoming Batman film &#8212; Silverwing\u2019s preview of its coming attraction wraps us in a cocoon-like cockpit with a heads-up display to envy.\u00a0 Silverwing\u2019s S1 was one of 20 machines to show up at Moffett Field in Mountain View, California for the GoFly Prize flyoff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"S1: Future of personal flight\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/usLB88q73Yk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sportaviation.mydigitalpublication.com\/publication\/?m=53731&amp;i=657167&amp;p=18\">As Beth Stanton reported<\/a> in the May issue of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sport Aviation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the gathering represented the best of 854 teams from 103 countries who made it through the first phase of the competition over two years ago.\u00a0 The attrition rate may seem high unless one considers the difficulty level posed by the contest\u2019s constraints.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15082\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/gofly-tetra_machine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15082\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15082\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/gofly-tetra_machine-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15082\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tetra-gofly.com\/project-tetra\">teTra, winner of the Pratt &amp; Whitney Disruptor Award<\/a>.\u00a0 The $100k should help further development<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beth&#8217;s article, \u201cOn the Edge of Possibility,\u201d draws its title from a statement by Malcolm Foster, a GoFly judge and mentor, and director of special projects at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gknaerospace.com\/\">GKN Aerospace<\/a>.\u00a0 He explained the challenge involved: \u201cThe eight-and-a-half-foot diameter with current battery technology was right on the edge of possibility.\u201d\u00a0 He referred to the size limit for the single-person-carrying vehicle that rise from and land within a 30-foot diameter circle with imaginary walls 12-feet high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beth expanded on the technical aspects\u00a0 involved.\u00a0 \u201cA basic principle for hovering vehicles is to get disk loading as low as possible with a rotor that is as large as possible. <a href=\"https:\/\/goflyprize.com\/how-it-works\/\">Competition constraints<\/a> limited the overall vehicle dimensions to eight and a half feet. It proved extraordinarily challenging to create a design using smaller rotors that would then require larger batteries to power it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite that, 20 teams from all over the world achieved at least partial success and showed up.\u00a0 They came with complete vehicles, partially-complete craft, and some scale representations of what they hoped to achieve.\u00a0 Foster added,\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s an extraordinarily difficult thing to do.
