{"id":12420,"date":"2020-05-29T21:26:48","date_gmt":"2020-05-30T04:26:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12420"},"modified":"2020-06-10T20:39:23","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T03:39:23","slug":"largest-electric-airplane-takes-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/largest-electric-airplane-takes-flight\/","title":{"rendered":"Largest Electric Airplane Takes Flight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yesterday, a Cessna C208 Caravan lifted off from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerotec.com\/\">AeroTEC<\/a> Flight Test Center at the Grant County International Airport (MWH)\u00a0in Moses Lake, Washington, being pulled aloft by a magniX 500 electric motor.\u00a0 The\u00a0 750-horsepower (560 kW) magni500 propulsion system is the largest to fly so far, and seemed to pull the ten-passenger craft easily, lifting off early and establishing a stable rate of climb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"magniX @ the 2019 Paris Air Show\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gSHrAWxIjVo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At last year\u2018s Paris Air Show, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roei Ganzarski, CEO of magniX, guided visitors through the promising features of his firm\u2019s two motors and its magniDrive inverter\/motor controller.\u00a0 All three products, as shown in the video, have found homes on retrofitted and new airframes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"MagniX Electric Aircraft: First Flight Highlights (eCaravan)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7C5TWPBlD4g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thursday&#8217;s flight went well.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/kimatv.com\/news\/local\/electric-plane-takes-off-over-moses-lake-making-history\">Ganzarski told reporters, <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The flight went as I like all flights to go, uneventful. There [were] no issues &#8212; it worked exactly as planned, in fact performed a little better than planned. We landed with more battery than expected and the pilot really performed greatly.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are compromises involved, though.\u00a0 A turbine-powered Caravan, as reported in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles), which because of the lower density of lithium batteries compared to Jet-A, would be reduced to 160 kilometers (99 miles).
