{"id":12442,"date":"2020-06-23T20:55:49","date_gmt":"2020-06-24T03:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12442"},"modified":"2020-06-23T20:55:49","modified_gmt":"2020-06-24T03:55:49","slug":"beta-alia-electric-with-tern-like-grace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/beta-alia-electric-with-tern-like-grace\/","title":{"rendered":"Beta Alia: Electric with Tern-like Grace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new aircraft\u2019s first takeoff is usually performed under its own power, but the recent trip by Beta Technologies&#8217; just-revealed Alia eVTOL (electric Vertical Take Off and Landing) aircraft was externally powered.\u00a0 A 30-minute lift across Lake Champlain from Alia\u2019s birthplace in Burlington, Vermont to its test site in Plattsburgh, New York was uneventful, but spectacular nonetheless.<\/p>\n<h4>Helicarrier Assists on First Flight<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beta Technologies&#039; Alia eVTOL aircraft gets a lift to its official testing ground\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L2yJdzP6YBA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Hauled 100 feet below <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helicarrier.com\/\">a Sikorsky S-61N from Quebec-based Helicarrier<\/a>, the all-white, four-rotor Alia \u201ccrossed over the northern end of Burlington. With streets along its route blocked off by police, [it] then flew at a stately pace across the lake, usually just a few hundred feet above the surface of the water,\u201d according to <em>Vertical.com<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Helicarrier, besides sharing a named with a Marvel Comics flying aircraft carrier and command center (fictional), performs real-life heavy lifts on anything up to 10,000 pounds.\u00a0 In the case of the Alia transport, the lift was extra heavy based on the value of the precious cargo.\u00a0 According to the Vertical.com article, \u201cBeing forced to activate the emergency release and dump it (\u201cthe priceless prototype\u201d) in the lake if something went wrong \u2014 something Helicarrier has never had to do \u2014 would set the program back at least a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pilot Aaron Lighter flew the mission, with aptly-named company president Fred Carrier acting as spotter.\u00a0 Lighter explained, \u201cIt\u2019s not very often we fly brand-new, experimental, multi-million-dollar projects like this. So, yeah, this is outside our scope a little bit. But at the end of the day it\u2019s a piece of equipment on the end of a long line, and we are very capable of getting it there safely.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15166\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Beta-Technologies-Alia-over-water-by-Sikorksy_S-61N-to-airfield-Eric-Adams-credit-June12-2020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15166\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15166\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Beta-Technologies-Alia-over-water-by-Sikorksy_S-61N-to-airfield-Eric-Adams-credit-June12-2020-528x660.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"660\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">S-61 carrying Beta Alia across Lake Champlain. Photo: Eric Adams<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lightened to just over 3,000 pounds, Alia was half its 6,000-pound (2,720 kilogram) maximum take-off weight.<\/p>\n<p>Lighter and Carrier took pains to ensure that the 50-foot span Alia remained stable in its crossing, and since it has a designed stall speed of 90 knots, to keep the transit speed \u201cwell below that at 40 knots.\u201d\u00a0 Most of the trip was flown with Alia 100 feet above ground or lake level, with the intent of accomplishing a quick touchdown in case of trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Rigging involved removing the four hover motors from Alia\u2019s outriggers and setting anchor hooks in their place.\u00a0 The craft was set with a three-degree nose-down attitude to keep it from lifting during the trip.\u00a0 After all local traffic was shut down in affected areas the trip went off \u201cwithout a hitch.\u201d\u00a0 See the full story on <em>Vertical.com<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Recharging Stations<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When Alia has its unique propellers mounted and undergoes test flights, it will be able to take advantage of Beta\u2019s recharging stations.\u00a0 Designed as a stand-alone system, each station will include a pilot lounge and sleeping accommodations with \u201cen-suite bath and full-size shower to help the pilots recharge between missions.\u201d\u00a0 And who wouldn\u2019t like the Mondrian-style walls in the bathrooms?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beta Technologies eVTOL Charging Station\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eHoar1cCE54?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The cargo-container-based site feature an on-site maintenance and repair workshop, secure and climate-controlled warehouse units, battery storage areas, solar arrays to help recharge batteries economically, and a backup generator to make the site self-sufficient if the grid cannot supply electricity.\u00a0 This is doubly important because of the primary mission for Beta Technology\u2019s primary backers: the delivery of organs for transplants for United Therapies, and the battlefield logistical support for the U. S. Air Force\u2019s Agility Prime program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Partners in Progress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beta explains, \u201cUnited Therapeutics commissioned this airplane to provide zero-emissions delivery for organ transplants, \u201cand intends to use Beta\u2019s aircraft as an efficient, environmentally friendly distribution system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United States Air Force is now commissioning prototypes for Agility Prime, a non-traditional US Air Force program seeking to accelerate the commercial market for advanced air mobility vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Alia Itself<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Inspired by the Arctic Tern according to company founder Kyle Clark, Alia\u2019s long, tapered wings enabling the bird to make an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/animal\/Arctic-tern\">annual migration of \u201c60,000 to 82,000 [kilometers] (roughly 37,000 to 51,000 miles)<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 Alia\u2019s overall configuration is graceful, and its cargo hold can contain 200 cubic feet of materiel \u2013 equivalent to about two Chevrolet Tahoes.
