autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/james-bond-stunt-pilots-electrifying-flight-rnctktq76\">Flown by Andrew Dixon<\/a>, that and a subsequent flight gained extra publicity for \u201ca James Bond stunt pilot*\u201d helming the first electric aircraft capable of carrying passengers from a United Kingdom airport.\u00a0 Dixon reported that the battery-powered Piper Malibu needed 10 per cent less distance for take-off and climbed faster than normal.<\/p>\n<h4>The Airplane Was the Real Star<\/h4>\n<p>Reflecting the high-flying status of the test pilot, the airplane, part of a government-funded \u201cHyFlyer\u201d project, flew two missions on two days of 15 and 25 minutes each.\u00a0 Its two automotive-based batteries easily carried the six-passenger aircraft on its tours of the Bedfordshire countryside.<\/p>\n<p>The second of two Piper Malibus to be converted by ZeroAvia, the craft will be converted to hydrogen power before an October or November \u201c300-mile flight from Orkney to an airport on the Scottish mainland.\u201dThis would be a predecessor to a line of fuel-cell aircraft that could include a 19-passenger medium-range commuter craft.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15190\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/zerpavia-in-flight-UK.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15190\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15190\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/zerpavia-in-flight-UK-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15190\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ZeroAvia Malibu lifts off under English skies<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessgreen.com\/news\/4016849\/electric-plane-hits-skies-uk-climate-friendly-flight\"><em>Business Green.com <\/em>reports<\/a> that, \u201cHaving demonstrated its new electric drive train the company intends to develop a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain and convert a 19-seat aircraft to run on hydrogen that could be in commercial use as early as 2023.\u201d\u00a0 The report add, \u201cYesterday&#8217;s test flight came\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessgreen.com\/news-analysis\/4016829\/study-predicts-commercial-hydrogen-planes-skies\">on the same day an EU-backed study<\/a>\u00a0assessed the potential for hydrogen-powered flight in Europe, predicting that with supportive regulatory, investment, and policy signals the technology could become a major player for short to medium haul plane journeys within 10 to 15 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ZeroAvia is partnering with the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.emec.org.uk\/\"> European Marine Energy Centre Ltd.<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligent-energy.com\/\">Intelligent Energy<\/a>, manufacturer of what they claim to be the lightest and most powerful H2 power systems.\u00a0 Over a decade ago, IE was promoting a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hydrogencarsnow.com\/index.php\/intelligent-energy-env\/\">fuel-cell scooter<\/a>, and later tested the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1464285919300896?via%3Dihub\">system with the Metropolitan Police<\/a> in London.\u00a0 They have developed small-scale systems for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and are collaborating with ZeroAvia on larger units.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fuel cell power for UAVs\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EMcfE-zr9qw?start=147&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
