in Transition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Terrafugia, a company started by a group of inspired college friends, has made it a mission to bring a flying car to the marketplace.\u00a0 Quite literally \u2013 it\u2019s in their mission statement: \u201cTerrafugia\u2019s mission is to create the ultimate mobility solution \u2013 flying cars.\u201d\u00a0 Even though the term is somewhat decried in current parlance \u2013 things like urban air taxis or sky taxis that would provide Urban Air Mobility being preferred.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Transition<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Their first craft, the Transition, earned a high hype score, with even Hammacher-Schlemmer including the flying car in their catalog.\u00a0 It flew at AirVenture in 2013, demonstrating its folding wings and reasonable Light Sport Aircraft performance (even with a waiver for its \u201cheavy LSA\u201d gross weight).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"First Public Demonstrations: Terrafugia Transition Flying Car, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, WI 2013\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KSpvw5PbMj8?start=94&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In some respects, the Transition is like Molt Taylor\u2019s famous Aerocar, the first such vehicle certified for land and air travel.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great deal simpler to operate, though, not requiring a trailer like the Aerocar to haul the wings and empennage.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t require assembly and disassembly to transition from aerial to terrestrial travel.\u00a0 Molt found that the number of licenses kept his craft from greater acceptance.\u00a0 Imagine the paperwork involved with applying for airworthiness certificates, aircraft, automobile and trailer licenses and one begins to get the idea.\u00a0 Only two Transitions have been built to date, possibly for reasons that limited Aerocar&#8217;s success.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"James May&#039;s Big Ideas - The Aerocar\" width=\"500\" web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>The T-FX<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In 2013, <a href=\"https:\/\/evtol.news\/aircraft\/terrafugia-tf-x\/\">Terrafugia introduced the T-FX<\/a>, a radical flying car.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t seem to have progressed beyond the computer-generated video stage, though.\u00a0 Some of the anticipated specifications seemed implausible to your editor, including a 500 mile range at a cruising speed of 200 mph.\u00a0 Its cost was to \u201cbe consistent with high-end luxury cars,\u201d but one wonders how high?\u00a0 Million-dollar Bugattis, perhaps.\u00a0 The one-megawatt power output from unleaded auto gas would not make it a truly green machine.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Terrafugia TF-X\u2122\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fXfRx4bDz1U?start=35&#038;feature=oembed\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Purchase by Zhejiang Geely<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/global.geely.com\/\">Chinese firm Geely Holding Group<\/a> explains a managerial transition for Terrafugia two years ago.\u00a0 \u201cTerrafugia was founded in 2006 by five award winning MIT graduates that had a vision and a passion to change the way human\u2019s move around their environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn November 13th 2017, Terrafugia became part of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group in an industry changing transaction, mixing Geely Holding\u2019s entrepreneurial and innovative spirit with Terrafugia\u2019s passion and vision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Geely has been on a spending spree that last few years, fetching Lotus cars, Volvo, and rights to the classic London taxi, which they have electrified.\u00a0 Their growing line of automobiles, including electrification of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polestar.com\/us\/polestar-2?\">Volvo in their Polestar line<\/a> and an exotic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/07\/21\/lotus-evija-detailed-video\/\">$2.1million Lotus Evija<\/a> that can do zero to 186 mph in nine seconds shows an intent to cover all price and performance levels.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The TF-2 in Several Iterations<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Terrafugia introduced a series of computer-generated videos for a new product called the TF-2, more like a flying mini-van than a flying car.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Terrafugia\u2019s eVTOL Concept Taps Hybrid Tech and Detachable Passenger Pods \u2013 AINtv\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6Py7mdydnY4?start=34&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Starting with the pre-Geely-acquisition version, TF-2 has gone through a few iterations.\u00a0 To help sort that out, the data-driven folks at <em>eVTOL News<\/em> keep a directory of all the actual and projected designs for Urban Air Mobility.\u00a0 In this recounting, there are two basic versions of the TF-2, the TF-2 Tilt Rotor (since abandoned) and the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/evtol.news\/aircraft\/terrafugia-tf-2-lift-push\/\">TF-2.0 Lift + Push<\/a> .\u00a0 Since then, they have introduced a smaller UAM\/Uber-possible machine, the <a href=\"https:\/\/evtol.news\/aircraft\/terrafugia-tf-2a\/\">TF-2A,<\/a> a two-seat sky taxi not unlike the Wisk Cora.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15200\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/terrafugia-tf2-tiltrotor.png\"><img id=\"caption-attachment-15201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Terrafugia TF-2 Lift + Push configuration<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The TF-2A, tested in a reduced-size version, has a wingspan of 4.5 meters (14.8 feet) carrying 60 kilograms (133 pounds) at about 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph).\u00a0 The full-size version will carry two passengers up to 100 kilometers (62 miles) and a cruising speed of 180 km\/hr (112 mph).\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/mp.weixin.qq.com\/s\/eaWshQ11mOwsVQwKLJlCfg\">Geely press release includes a video<\/a> of the reduced-size test machine.<\/p>\n<div
