{"id":12519,"date":"2020-07-17T22:27:34","date_gmt":"2020-07-18T05:27:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12519"},"modified":"2020-08-17T19:36:36","modified_gmt":"2020-08-18T02:36:36","slug":"hypoint-and-hydrogen-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/hypoint-and-hydrogen-flight\/","title":{"rendered":"HyPoint and Hydrogen Flight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Their web site proclaims, \u201cHyPoint, Inc. is developing the next generation hydrogen fuel cell system with zero CO2 emissions and game-changing energy performance for the air transportation and urban air mobility market.\u201d\u00a0 Pointing out a \u201c<strong>fundamental barrier<\/strong><strong>\u00a0at a chemistry level<\/strong>\u201d for lithium-ion batteries, the fuel cell maker launches some seemingly outrageous claims.<\/p>\n<p>HyPoint states, \u201cOur patented technology increases\u00a0<strong>operational time<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>utilization rate<\/strong>\u00a0while decreasing\u00a0<strong>TCO <\/strong>(total cost of operation)\u00a0of any flying platform.\u201d\u00a0 They claim \u201c5X operational time, 10X utilization rate, 20X faster charge,\u201d and a TCO 90 percent of equivalent battery-powered systems.<\/p>\n<p>As we have reported here, demonstrated outputs for lithium-ion cells are around 350 Watt-hours per kilogram, and about 260 Whr\/kg at the pack level. \u00a0HyPoint says it can already demonstrate a system-level specific power of 1,000 Watts per kilogram and an energy density of 530 kW-hr\/kg.\u00a0 \u00a0The company points to its next generation of \u201cturbo air-cooled\u201d units to produce even more power and show better energy density.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12524\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-fuel-cell-comparison-2-528x261.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-fuel-cell-comparison-2-528x261.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-fuel-cell-comparison-2-300x148.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-fuel-cell-comparison-2.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These improvements would make the fuel cell a candidate for aircraft use, according to HyPoint.\u00a0 Already collaborating with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeroavia.com\/\">ZeroAvia<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanaero.com\/category\/2020\">Urban Aeronautics<\/a>, HyPoint hopes to supply airworthy systems by next year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15258\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-urban-aero.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15258\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15258\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-urban-aero-528x297.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15258\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Urban Aeronautics, which is pioneering the next generation of eVTOL aircraft for commercial air taxi and air rescue roles, and HyPoint, a leader in next generation, high power (HTPEM) hydrogen fuel cell systems, will explore the development of an advanced version of Urban Aeronautics\u2019 CityHawk eVTOL powered by HyPoint\u2019s cutting-edge, hydrogen fuel cell stack technology. As currently designed, CityHawk relies on hybrid propulsion.\u00a0<\/em><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><strong>True Costs of Operation?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mass-produced,HyPoint&#8217;s current fuel cells would cost about $800 to $1,000 per kilowatt.\u00a0 The cost per kilowatt-hour would depend on the cost of hydrogen flowing through the cell.\u00a0 HyPoint is apparently counting on their new \u201cturbo air-cooled\u201d units to lower that cost, although they are reluctant to disclose what the cell costs will be.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2020\/02\/26\/tesla-secret-roadrunner-project-battery-production-massive-scale\/\">Tesla\u2019s \u201cRoadrunner\u201d project<\/a> aims to lower battery prices to $100 per kilowatt-hour.\u00a0 For battery electric vehicles, that is a set rate (increasing slightly over time as the battery capacity is reduced in use).\u00a0 Charging costs should decline over time, as solar cells and wind turbines become more efficient and less costly.<\/p>\n<p>Several sources challenge the idea that hydrogen power can operate cars (or airplanes) more cheaply than electricity stored in batteries.\u00a0 <em>Inside EVs<\/em>, for instance, reports that Volkswagen is trending toward batteries exclusively, stating somewhat provocatively, &#8220;In the case of the passenger car, everything speaks in favor of the battery and practically nothing speaks in favor of hydrogen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12522\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12522\" class=\"wp-image-12522\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-battery-electric-bev-or-hydrogen-fuel-cell-fcv-source-volkswagen-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-battery-electric-bev-or-hydrogen-fuel-cell-fcv-source-volkswagen-528x297.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-battery-electric-bev-or-hydrogen-fuel-cell-fcv-source-volkswagen-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-battery-electric-bev-or-hydrogen-fuel-cell-fcv-source-volkswagen-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-battery-electric-bev-or-hydrogen-fuel-cell-fcv-source-volkswagen-1536x864.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-battery-electric-bev-or-hydrogen-fuel-cell-fcv-source-volkswagen.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The efficiencies in comparison, as described by Volkswagen, which has a preference for batteries. Would another comparison from a different perspective yield a different preference?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fred Lambert, writing in <em>Electrek<\/em> predicts, \u201cThough hydrogen certainly has more potential with semi-trucks than passenger cars, it\u2019s still not likely to triumph over batteries for powering the next generation of zero-emission transport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we have often explained before, the entire end-to-end process from production to consumption is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2016\/04\/26\/automakers-fuel-cell-hydrogen-electric-vehicles\/\">3x times more energy efficient for battery-powered vehicles than hydrogen fuel cell vehicles<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 This was written three years ago, and things in both battery and fuel cell worlds have changed considerably.\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting that Lambert felt enthusiastic enough about his ideas at that time to use no less than four exclamation points in his caption to the diagram below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-hybrid_hydrogen_vs_electric_chart-e1461680641695.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15267 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-hybrid_hydrogen_vs_electric_chart-e1461680641695.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"656\" height=\"548\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What hope is there for hydrogen fuel cells in aircraft if the numbers tend to favor large stationary installations or their use in large vehicles such as buses or class 8 trucks?<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Use in Aircraft<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As we described 11 years ago, \u201cGerard Thevenot, a long-time championship-level hang-glider pilot, celebrated the centennial of Louis Bleriot\u2019s flight across la Manche (the French name for the English Channel) by flying his hydrogen-powered\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lamouette.com\/en\/index.html\">La Mouette hang glider<\/a>\u00a0over roughly the same route Bleriot took between Calais and Dover on August 6, 2009.\u201d\u00a0 Later reports showed the flight used 755 grams (1.66 pounds)\u00a0of H2, a great deal less than the amount of fuel a howling two-stroke engine might have consumed.<\/p>\n<p>At current prices for hydrogen, at $1 to $1.40 per pound liquefied and transported to the user, the trip would have cost $1.66 to $2.33.\u00a0 Try flying 22 miles any cheaper than that.<\/p>\n<p>Today, several firms are exploring H2 aviation.\u00a0 ZeroAvia, flying both Hollister, California and Cranfield, England, is using avgas and hybrid setups so far, but will switch its proof-of-concept Piper Malibus to hydrogen power in the near future.\u00a0 They are partnered with HyPoint, so we look for flight tests by next year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alakai.com\/index.html\">The Alaka\u2019i Skai<\/a>\u00a0is intended to fly on H2 from the beginning.\u00a0 The four-rotor UAM will have a range of hundreds of miles, rather than dozens like its battery-powered competition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/aircraft\/urban-aeronautics-hydrogen-cityhawk-evtol-hypoint\/\">Reported in <em>New Atlas<\/em><\/a>, Rafi Yoeli, CEO of Urban Aeronautics says, \u201cWe look forward to collaborating with HyPoint on the integration of the next generation of hydrogen fuel cell systems for eVTOL transportation and the urban air mobility market. As a high-power, 100 percent environmentally friendly fuel, hydrogen is key to the future of eVTOL aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15265\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-toyota-speculation-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15265\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15265\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hypoint-toyota-speculation-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Red Jensen shared this photo of a strange craft at Mojave Airport.\u00a0 One Redditor speculated, &#8220;The tail number\u00a0<a class=\"_3t5uN8xUmg0TOwRCOGQEcU\" href=\"https:\/\/flightaware.com\/resources\/registration\/N871YT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow ugc noreferrer\">N971YT<\/a>\u00a0is registered to Toyota.
