{"id":12535,"date":"2020-07-23T16:17:24","date_gmt":"2020-07-23T23:17:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12535"},"modified":"2020-07-23T16:17:24","modified_gmt":"2020-07-23T23:17:24","slug":"electric-aviation-group-goes-big","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/electric-aviation-group-goes-big\/","title":{"rendered":"Electric Aviation Group Goes Big"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Emulating bird flight has been a big part of man\u2019s desire to fly through the years.\u00a0 The latest in ornithological look-alikes comes from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electricaviationgroup.com\/\">Electric Aviation Group in the United Kingdom<\/a>.\u00a0 Their creation seem to be an outgrowth of last year\u2019s somewhat controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theengineer.co.uk\/bird-of-prey-airbus\/\">Bird of Prey concept<\/a> displayed by Airbus at several prominent airshows.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/airbus-bird-of-prey.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-15280\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/airbus-bird-of-prey-528x396.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Designed to have a \u201ccertain \u2018Wow\u2019 factor,\u201d the model took its cues from hawks and eagles, including a high-arched wing blended into the upper fuselage.\u00a0 It featured wingtips much like a bird\u2019s, with primary feathers ostensible capable of morphing to control banking and even adverse yaw in a turn. Even its patriotic tail feathers were indeed feather-like and added to the avian quality of the aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Sailplane designers in the 1930&#8217;s tried similar imitation, with craft like the German Fafnir reaching an arch-winged perfection.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15284\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/EAG-FAFNIR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15284\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15284\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/EAG-FAFNIR-528x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15284\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">High-aspect ratio wing with distinctive bird-like shape helped German Fafnir glider achieve several world distance and endurance records.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Its flight, at least in this video, would be a model of grace and smooth, flowing motion \u2013 a bit dreamlike.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Airbus\u2019 \u201cBird of Prey\u201d\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JcJaHvwdN7A?start=7&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Hybrid Electric Regional Aircraft (HERA)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The British have always been good at giving their aircraft mythological appellations.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greekmythology.com\/Olympians\/Hera\/hera.html\">According to <em>Greekmythology.com<\/em><\/a>, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greekmythology.com\/Olympians\/Hera\/hera.html\">Hera<\/a>\u00a0is the wife of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greekmythology.com\/Olympians\/Zeus\/zeus.html\">Zeus<\/a>, the Queen of Olympus, and the Olympian goddess of marriage. As such, she is also the deity most associated with family and the welfare of women and children. Her marriage, however, was an unhappy one, since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greekmythology.com\/Olympians\/Zeus\/zeus.html\">Zeus<\/a>\u00a0had numerous affairs. Jealous and vengeful,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greekmythology.com\/Olympians\/Hera\/hera.html\">Hera<\/a>\u00a0made sure to give each of his consorts some hard time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others have used the acronym, with one example four years ago from Imperial College in London.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hybrid Electric Regional Aircraft\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SZ82cJl2wGc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Substantially different in configuration and with a distributed electric approach to propulsion, this aircraft has the same basic mission and requirements for quiet, economical, clean operation as the EAG proposal.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>EAG<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Perhaps short for EAGle, the resurrected design seems to be a more plausible version of the Bird of Prey, and has solid corporate and aerodynamic backing.<\/p>\n<p>Mission parameters include reducing carbon dioxide emissions 75 percent per passenger kilometer over regular jet aircraft, dropping nitrogen oxide emissions 90 percent, and lowering noise by 65 percent.\u00a0 EAG embraces these goals enthusiastically, seeing a slowdown in cleaning up existing craft.\u00a0 \u201cWhile the sector has made substantial progress over the last 50 years in addressing some of these factors, the pace of improvement is slowing as opportunities to do so on existing aircraft diminish and we remain a long way from reversing the impact on the environment. Hence it is time for the industry to embrace a paradigm shift. If we are to realize improving emissions that are moving towards the 2050 targets, then this paradigm shift needs to be embraced now and wholeheartedly.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15283\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/EAG-Diagram.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15283\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15283\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/EAG-Diagram-528x373.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15283\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EAG&#8217;s HERA will have a tail perhaps inspired by aerodynamicist Bruce Carmichael rather than that of the earlier birdlike Airbus design<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to notes released for the beginning of the (virtual) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theautochannel.com\/news\/2020\/07\/20\/833579-electric-aviation-group-unveils-world-s-first-hybrid-electric-70.html\">Farnborough International Air Show<\/a>, EAG\u2019s HERA will be endowed with the following virtues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Whisper-quiet operation reduces noise pollution<\/li>\n<li>Innovative airborne battery regeneration to minimize turn-around time<\/li>\n<li>Efficient battery integration<\/li>\n<li>Thermal management of motors and power electronics<\/li>\n<li>Gear Assisted Take-Off Run (GATOR) gives rapid acceleration for a quick lift-off reducing energy requirements<\/li>\n<li>Short take-off-and-landing (STOL) performance enables new route opportunities affording greater profitability to operators<\/li>\n<li>Cabin-flex design enables passenger operation during the day and cargo operation at night<\/li>\n<li>Suitability for operating from regional airports brings convenience to travelers and gives increased proximity to warehouses, enabling private sector cargo to optimize last-mile terrestrial logistics and delivery systems and reduce carbon emissions<\/li>\n<li>Future-proof design to accommodate alternative energy sources if available before 2030<\/li>\n<li>Flexibility to transform into an all-electric or carbon-neutral as the battery density improves or alternative fuels and associated powertrain technologies mature and become affordable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The design, has received additional support from EAG\u2019s JetZero consortium, which includes some of the UK\u2019s leading engineering and manufacturing organizations and senior academic advisors.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wright Introduction\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IxkmuEmhRrc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>There will be competition, perhaps.\u00a0 With larger and longer-range craft such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/weflywright.com\/\">Jeff Engler and EasyJet\u2019s Wright 1 <\/a>\u00a0making headway, HERA will find itself in a new and competitive environment.\u00a0 Its medium size and medium-range capabilities should make it a desirable aircraft for that part of the market.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Felectric-aviation-group-goes-big%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Emulating bird flight has been a big part of man\u2019s desire to fly through the years.\u00a0 The latest in ornithological look-alikes comes from the Electric Aviation Group in the United Kingdom.\u00a0 Their creation seem to be an outgrowth of last year\u2019s somewhat controversial Bird of Prey concept displayed by Airbus at several prominent airshows.
