{"id":12551,"date":"2020-08-05T16:48:29","date_gmt":"2020-08-05T23:48:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12551"},"modified":"2020-08-06T06:40:48","modified_gmt":"2020-08-06T13:40:48","slug":"switzerland-to-the-north-sea-flying-electrically","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/switzerland-to-the-north-sea-flying-electrically\/","title":{"rendered":"Switzerland to the North Sea &#8211; Flying Electrically"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019re still early in attempts to set world records with electric airplanes.\u00a0 Jean-Luc Soullier, a friend of the blog, held many of them a decade ago, flying a little Colomban MC-30, an ultralight designed by one of Concorde\u2019s engineers.\u00a0 At the other end of the size scale, Solar Impulse set many records on its globe-girdling treks.\u00a0 Now, a five-member mostly German team hopes to set seven world records \u201cin one fell swoop\u201d as they electrically traverse 700 kilometers (435 miles) between the Schanis, Switzerland airport and Norderney Airport on Germany\u2019s North Sea.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LSA MC30E, ulm \u00e9lectrique\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jB1U6YUKc6w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>Friends of Electric Mobility<\/h4>\n<p>The five have interesting professional lives beyond their love of flight.\u00a0 \u201cFuturologist Morell Westermann, Swiss pilot Marco Buholzer, the Norderneyer brewer Tobi Pape, the video and music producer Tom Albrecht and the podcaster Malik Aziz, who founded the association \u2018Friends of Electric Mobility\u2019 want to start on August 31,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electric-flight.eu\/\">according to <em>Electric-Flight.eu<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 They will fly Pipistrel\u2019s recently certified Velis Electro.\u00a0 The team adds, \u201cAbove all, we want to prove its suitability for everyday use.\u00a0That is why we do not fly prototypes specially designed for such record missions that only work under laboratory conditions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15301\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/EWF-route.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15301\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15301\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/EWF-route-528x625.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"625\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">700 kilometers (435 miles) by air -considerably farther by car: 1,246 kilometers (772.5 miles)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They hope to achieve their records during the planned three-day flight, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lowest energy consumption (kWh \/ 100 km) over 700km<\/li>\n<li>Highest average speed over 700 km (km \/ h)<\/li>\n<li>Highest flight altitude ever reached with an electric aircraft (meter above main sea level)<\/li>\n<li>Fastest climbing performance from 0-1000m \/ 1000-2000m \/ 2000-3000m (m \/ s)<\/li>\n<li>Fastest average speed over 100km (km \/ h)<\/li>\n<li>Lowest number of stops at 700km distance (number of stops)<\/li>\n<li>Longest electrically flown route in 24\/48\/56 hours (km)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The team\u2019s Velis, based at the Schanis, Switzerland airport (LSZX), will make <a href=\"https:\/\/elektro-weltrekordflug.eu\/route\/\">a three-day flight of the 700 kilometers<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s an average of only 144.6 miles per day, which may not seem all that adventurous.\u00a0 Flying a light airplane over the Alps certainly counts, and finding chargers along the way adds to the venture.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Comparing This to a Nissan Leaf\u2019s Trip<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Only 8 years ago, your editor wrote about Tony Williams, a then unemployed airline pilot who drove his daughter from Baja, California to Victoria, B. C. in his Nissan Leaf for a relative\u2019s wedding. Early editions of that car managed around 100 to 125 miles on a charge, so Tony counted on the still-under-development network of charging stations along the I-5 to ensure that stops would be productive.\u00a0 Today, motels, restaurants, gas stations, and Kohl and Walgreen\u2019s parking lots have chargers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15302\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/EWF-TonyWilliamsLEAFmexico2Canada11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15302\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15302\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/EWF-TonyWilliamsLEAFmexico2Canada11-528x189.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tony Williams&#8217; Baja to B.C. Nissan Leaf was highly recognizable on its journey up the I-5<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The sparseness of charging stations meant Tony had to plan carefully.\u00a0 Similarly, our Swiss pilots will need to be prepared for a paucity of airports with the necessary support gear.<\/p>\n<p>Overcoming the obstacles of terrain, aircraft range limitations (not too different from the 2012 Leaf) and relative lack of airport accommodations for electric craft today, the crew hopes to prove five big points.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cElectric flying is 4x more efficient than fossil drives<\/li>\n<li>\u201cE-planes are as efficient as e-cars<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCO\u2082-neutral flying is already possible today<\/li>\n<li>\u201cElectric flying is considerably quieter<\/li>\n<li>\u201cNo contrails, exhaust fumes and kerosene stank\u201d (We all need to add this to our descriptions of fossil-fuel fumers, ground-bound or aerial.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>\u00a0&#8220;<\/strong><strong>Climate friendly, quiet and a little bit crazy&#8221; (their words)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The partners compare their adventure to that of Charles Lindbergh, who managed a solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927, winning the $25,000 (about $370,000 today) Orteig Prize, the largest such award up to that time.\u00a0 The partners, however, have calculated they will have to pungle up between 50,000 and 80,000 euros to pull off their expedition.\u00a0 Part of that will finance their application for the Guinness World Records acknowledgements.\u00a0 Here your editor thought the Guinness folks showed up with plaques and medals when someone did something noteworthy.\u00a0 It turns out they have to be lured to the scene and rewarded themselves.\u00a0 Needless to say, they are looking for willing funders.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;Flying is not necessarily harmful to the climate&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_12555\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12555\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12555\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/EWF-lead-image-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/EWF-lead-image-528x297.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/EWF-lead-image-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/EWF-lead-image-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/EWF-lead-image-1536x864.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/EWF-lead-image-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12555\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Friends of Electric Mobility will attempt to set seven world records in one flight<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Pilot Marco Buholzer explains the grander goal. \u00a0\u201cFlying with kerosene is extremely harmful to the climate. Aviation currently accounts for around five percent of the global warming, and the trend is increasing. The emissions at high altitude are a particular problem that arise from air traffic.
