A Big Show in a Small Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For those of us who find trudging over miles of airfield, such as Oshkosh\u2019s AirVenture, or even local fly-ins spread along a runway tiring, Grenchen, Switzerland\u2019s Electrifly-In may be welcome relief.\u00a0 The event, previously called the Smartflyer Challenge, is planned for September 12 and 13 and should draw electric aircraft from all over Europe.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Visual Approach Grenchen, Switzerland\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/7253324?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Grenchen, a town of just over 2,000, has an airport with a single runway of only 865 meters (2,838 feet), enough to enable a Cessna Citation CJ3 to land (and presumably depart).\u00a0 The runway will host this year\u2019s newly re-named Electrifly-In, devoted to promoting electric aviation.\u00a0 All the activities will be held in a small, easily-accessible area.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15340\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/electrifly-map.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15340\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15340\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/electrifly-map-528x254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15340\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Compact area makes touring all the attractions at Electrifly-In easily done<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>All Electric Aircraft \u2013 All Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A baker\u2019s dozen aircraft have been promised for the event, ranging from ultralight motorgliders to more advanced sailplanes with front electric sustainer motors, to four-seat hybrid tourers, two-seat trainers and even an e-race airplane.<\/p>\n<p>AlpinAirPlanes GmbH, will bring their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alpinairplanes.ch\/\"><strong>Pipistrel Velis E<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"From Megeve to Sallanches with electric Phoenix\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VbQb2hWmark?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; his two-seat, MGM Compro-powered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pure-flight.eu\"><strong>U-15E Phoenix<\/strong> <\/a>from the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n<p>Two Swiss owners will have their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lange-aviation.com\"><strong>Lange Antares E<\/strong><\/a> self-launching sailplane on display.<\/p>\n<p>Cornelia Ruppert, director of communications and flight instruction for Ruppert Composite GmbH, will have an<a href=\"https:\/\/ruppert-composite.ch\/en\/\"> <strong>Archaeopteryx Electro<\/strong> <\/a>on the flight line.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15347\" style=\"width: href=\"http:\/\/www.dg-flugzeugbau.de\"><strong>DG-1001-neo<\/strong><\/a> from Bruchsal, Germany.\u00a0 This two seat machine uses <a href=\"http:\/\/www.front-electric-sustainer.com\/index.php\">the <strong>Front Electric Sustainer System \u2013 FES<\/strong><\/a> from Slovenia to enable level flight or climbs after a more normal sailplane launch.<\/p>\n<p>Solar Flight Europe, Eric and Irena Raymond\u2019s pioneering enterprise, will have<a href=\"http:\/\/www.solar-flight.com\"> <strong>Sunseeker Duo<\/strong>,<\/a> the world\u2019s only two-seat, solar-powered aircraft available for view.\u00a0 Eric will also discuss the aircraft during the event\u2019s symposium<\/p>\n<p>Alisport Swiss will display its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alisport.com\/?product=silent-2-electro-2\"><strong>Silent 2 Electro<\/strong><\/a>, another craft with the FES power system on board.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15349\" href=\"http:\/\/www.evolaris-aviation.com\/\"><strong>Urs Viliger<\/strong><\/a> being developed by Evolaris, has a tail-mounted electric motor driving a propeller and a nose mounted hybrid generating system.<\/p>\n<p>Pipistrel will bring its <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pipistrel-aircraft.com\">Panthera<\/a>, <\/strong>the hybrid version currently in development, from Slovenia.<\/p>\n<div Aeronefs of Lausanne, Switzerland will show its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pieaeronefs.ch\"><strong>UR-1 electric raceplane<\/strong>,<\/a> set to compete in Air Race E in 2021.\u00a0 This is slated to hit a top speed of 520 kilometers per hour (323 mph)!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Air Race Circuit | 3D Model\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Symposium with Expert Speakers<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>On Saturday the 12th or Sunday the 13<sup>th<\/sup> from 10:30 a. m. to 12:30 p. m., The Grenchen Motorfluggruppe training room will host a symposium featuring:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Solar flight in the Sunseeker Duo<\/li>\n<li>A \u201cMade in Switzerland\u201d Air Race E 2021 participant, the Pie Aeronefs \u2013 UR-1 aircraft<\/li>\n<li>A recounting of a world record flight from the Alps to the North Sea (German)\u00a0in a Pipistrel Velis\u2013 reported on here last week<\/li>\n<li>ETH Zurich will present its academic focus project, the eSling, an adaptation of a popular South African airplane.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Organizers promise even more talks, with ample time over the two days to meet presenters and others.<\/p>\n<p>From 2:30 p. m. to 5:00 p. m. on Saturday, a panel discussion, &#8220;THE eTALK,&#8221; will bring together, \u201cSpecialists and experts from the fields of technology, training, politics, regulations, pilots, etc. [who] will address current and\u00a0controversial questions.\u00a0 Hansj\u00f6rg B\u00fcrgi, publisher of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.skynews.ch\/\">magazine SKYNEWS<\/a>, will moderate.<\/p>\n<p>Best of all, if you\u2019re flying your own electric aircraft, Grenchen Airport will waive landing fees for your entrance to the event.<\/p>\n<p>Participants can also compete in the second edition of the eTrophy competition, which will reward the longest non-stop flight with 1,000 to 3,000 Swiss Francs.\u00a0 During the award ceremony on Saturday evening the winner of the challenge will get the eTrophy for the longest electric non-stop flight.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, this
