{"id":12622,"date":"2020-09-02T18:00:12","date_gmt":"2020-09-03T01:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12622"},"modified":"2020-09-02T18:00:12","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T01:00:12","slug":"pipistrels-nuuvas-electric-cargo-haulers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/pipistrels-nuuvas-electric-cargo-haulers\/","title":{"rendered":"Pipistrel\u2019s Nuuva\u2019s \u2013 Electric Cargo Haulers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like the TV commercial of the obviously wealthy couple requesting an architect design a kitchen around their choice of designer faucet, Pipistrel may have designed a cargo aircraft around the ubiquitous EUR-pallet.\u00a0 Its extraordinary Nuuva V300 can hold three of these 1,200\u00a0mm \u00d7\u00a0800\u00a0mm \u00d7\u00a0144\u00a0mm (47.2\u00a0in \u00d7\u00a031.5\u00a0in \u00d7\u00a05.7\u00a0in) platforms laden with items destined for distant places.\u00a0 The common dimensions enable planning a load (also considering total weight) that can be inserted into the Nuuva with a standard forklift.\u00a0 The cargo hold can manage up to 460 kilograms (1,000 pounds) within three cubic meters (106 cubic feet) of space, a little more than an Escalade.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15402\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/pipistrel-nuuva-epal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15402\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15402\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/pipistrel-nuuva-epal-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15402\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cargo hold of Nuuva V300 can hold three E-Pals, as they are called<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Electricity to Lift, Gasoline to Push<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It takes a big vehicle with loads of power to hoist this kind of cargo.\u00a0 Pipistrel sticks with proven systems for vertical and horizontal flight.\u00a0 \u201cThe Nuuva V300 takes-off and lands using eight independent battery-powered Pipistrel E-811 electric motors, already Type Certified. This revolutionary zero-emission powertrain is entirely liquid-cooled, including the batteries, and has demonstrated the ability to withstand faults, battery thermal runaway events, and crash loads as part of the EASA certification process.\u00a0 Using eight of the same motors as a Velis, which this last weekend demonstrated its capabilities on a 700-kilometer record attempt, counts as a confidence builder.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pipistrel Nuuva V300 | Unmanned Cargo eVTOL Aircraft\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l-2O1_Wd06E?start=23&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Pipistrel reports, \u201cNuuva V300\u2019s batteries can be charged by simply plugging-in to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pipistrel-aircraft.com\/world-renowned-electric-vehicles-charging-pioneer-green-motion-joins-forces-with-pipistrel-to-define-the-future-of-electric-airplane-charging\/\">SkyCharge<sup>TM<\/sup>\u00a0by Pipistrel and Green Motion<\/a>\u00a0charging station.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pushing it along is a certified four-stroke fossil-fuel powered engine, quite possibly a Rotax that seems to power much of European aviation. \u00a0Fuel consumption of 30 liters (eight gallons) per hour can use a \u201ctypical\u201d fuel load of 65 kilograms (143 pounds) to move a load for just under three hours. At a \u201cfast cruise speed\u201d of 220 kilometers per hour (119 knots or 137 mph) that would give a no-reserve range of about 625 kilometers (387 miles) \u2013 rounding down for safety\u2019s sake.\u00a0 A more reasonable economy cruise would allow 165 km\/hr or 89 knots (102 mph).\u00a0 That would still allow 480 miles range or just under 300 miles.\u00a0 (Note: these calculations are very \u201cloose\u201d and subject to scrutiny.)<\/p>\n<p>Nuuva V300s will be able to land and take off at 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level helped by the craft\u2019s 13.2 meter (43 feet, 4 inch) wingspan.\u00a0 They will be able to cruise at 6,000 meters or 19,700 feet ASL.\u00a0 Of course, all this will depend on total weight, which can top out at 1,700 kg or \u00a03,750 pounds.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15406\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/pipistrel-V300-oil-and-gas-768x504.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15406\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15406\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/pipistrel-V300-oil-and-gas-768x504-528x347.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"347\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unpiloted operation will enable hazardous missions without danger to humans<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Pipistrel claims an operating cost \u201c10 times lower\u201d than helicopters, which should make these vehicles advantageous for non-profit organizations needing access to remote locations.
