It has created the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomflightprize.org\/\"><strong>Freedom Flight Prize<\/strong><\/a>, a competition focused on crossing the Atlantic Ocean 100-percent powered by renewable energy \u2014 with seating for 100. The first to do so will win the prize, which is expected to be worth millions of British pounds by the time there\u2019s a winner,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2020\/09\/05\/1st-100-seat-aircraft-to-cross-atlantic-powered-by-100-renewable-energy-wins-freedom-flight-prize\/\">according to <em>Cleantechnica.com<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15424\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/freedomflight-HERO-ZeroEmissionsPlane-JoeDoucet-.615.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15424\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15424\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/freedomflight-HERO-ZeroEmissionsPlane-JoeDoucet-.615-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15424\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Will the FreedomFlight winner look like Will Doucet&#8217;s HERO ZeroEmissions Plane?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe competition is open to manufacturers, research\/academic groups and inventors to design and fly a\u00a0100+ seater passenger aircraft\u00a0powered by\u00a0100-percent renewable energy. The plane must complete a\u00a0return trip from London to New York; each leg of the trip in under 10 hours and must finish the return leg within 24 hours of starting out on the round trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not even Boeing\u2019s dormant Zunum spinoff or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electricaviationgroup.com\/\">Electric Aircraft Group\u2019s HERA<\/a> plan on seating that many.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/weflywright.com\/\">Jeff Engler\u2019s Wright Electric<\/a> plans on a 150-seat distributed electric propulsion machine.\u00a0 Other potential contenders at this point seem to be more interested in creating smaller, lower-range craft.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Rules<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cMust be powered 100% by renewable energy (e.g. Electricity generated by solar, wind or hydro power; hydrogen made by electrolysis using renewable energy).\u200b<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15428\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/freedom-flight-wright1-infocwrightelectric-1100-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15428\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15428\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/freedom-flight-wright1-infocwrightelectric-1100-1-528x254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15428\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wright Electric could carry requisite passengers, but could it make the distance?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cNote: Aircraft using bio-fuels and synthetic aviation fuels are excluded from this Prize.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u201cMust be able to carry at least 100 passengers.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMust be able to fly each leg in under 10 hours.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMust be non-stop \u2013 without the need to land to refuel between London\u00a0and New York.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMust land back at London* within 24 hours of originally leaving for New York*.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe aircraft must meet the current safety standards in the US and UK and have complied with current approval processes for such a demonstration \/ test flight.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cParticipants must be registered with the Freedom Flight Prize before completing the historic flight.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u201cA\u00a0representative of Carbon Footprint Ltd\u00a0must be on-board the aircraft\u00a0to validate the legitimacy of the flight.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u201cThe first person, company or team to do this will be awarded the\u00a0Freedom Flight Prize Fund and take their rightful place in aviation history.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Small Print&#8230;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_15429\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/freedomflight-zunum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15429\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15429\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/freedomflight-zunum-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15429\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Boeing offshoot Zunum was not planned to be over 50 passengers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cCarbon Footprint Ltd holds the right to\u00a0update the rules from time to time. This may include clarifications and corrections, but will never change the ultimate goal of the Freedom Flight Prize which is enabling zero carbon aviation.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u201c*Airports must be within a 50 mile radius of these cities. The route can also be the other way round i.e. New York to London to New York.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Details for how to enter the competition can be found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomflightprize.org\/howtoenter\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>3,462.42 miles<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The shortest air distance between London and New York is 3,462.42 miles, the great circle route distance Charles Lindbergh achieved in his 1927 flight. \u00a0That means the aircraft can cruise at around 350 miles per hour (perhaps a little more to make up for altitude gain and approach descent), enough to complete the trip in the 10-hour limit.\u00a0 This is 63-percent of the average 550 mph of current jetliners.<\/p>\n<p>These are important points.\u00a0 Doubling the speed of an airplane increases the drag by the square, meaning an equivalent airplane traveling twice the speed of another will generate four times the drag.\u00a0 Even worse, from what your editor understands, Power required for that doubled speed goes up by the cube factor.\u00a0 The faster airplane will require eight times the power.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15430\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/freedom-flight-hy4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15430\" class=\"wp-image-15430\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/freedom-flight-hy4-528x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15430\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pipistrel HY4 is a hydrogen-powered derivation of Green Flight Challenge winner &#8211; but only four seats and regional range<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This probably helped set the rules for the 2011 Green Flight Challenge, batteries being what they were back then.\u00a0 The 200 mile route and 100 mph cruising speeds led to extraordinary passenger miles for energy equivalent to that of gasoline.\u00a0 Interestingly, the four craft that took part in that competition are still flying and achieving new levels of economy and performance.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Who\u2019s Behind This?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Carbon Footprint Ltd. is an international operation that seems to be on every continent except Antarctica, promoting carbon reduction projects from clean stoves for developing nations to reducing deforestation and implementing clean energy projects.\u00a0 They seem well connected and fully capable of managing this project to fruition.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Freedom  Flight Prize\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GrF0f5022fc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>John Buckley, Managing Director of Carbon Footprint Ltd, is an aerospace engineer, and founder of the Freedom Flight Prize.\u00a0 He explained, \u201cThis is the revolution that I have been waiting my whole career for \u2013 the Freedom Flight Prize puts 100% renewable flights right in the spotlight in order to address the climate emergency we face. The Prize does not accept the compromise that long haul travel produces a high carbon footprint \u2013 in fact it recognizes that the technologies to power flights solely on sustainable renewable energy are available.
