{"id":12657,"date":"2020-09-12T21:25:50","date_gmt":"2020-09-13T04:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12657"},"modified":"2020-09-12T21:25:50","modified_gmt":"2020-09-13T04:25:50","slug":"aviation-milestone-successful-electric-world-record-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/aviation-milestone-successful-electric-world-record-flight\/","title":{"rendered":"Aviation Milestone: Successful Electric World Record Flight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/elektro-weltrekordflug.eu\/\">The Elektro-Weltrekordflug (electric world record flight) team had great success<\/a> in its flight from Sch\u00e4nis, Switzerland to Norderney, on Germany\u2019s North Sea.\u00a0 Setting five of its intended seven world records and then flying back to Switzerland, the team and its Pipistrel Velis showed that electric flight can be a reality for light aircraft.\u00a0 All we need are charging stations along the way.<\/p>\n<p>Your Editor will do something not normal to the blog &#8211; repeat most of someone else\u2019s writing with a few comments tossed in.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe world record flight with the first certified electric aircraft from the Alps to the North Sea in Norderney was a success.\u00a0The \u201cPipistrel Velis Electro\u201d landed again in Sch\u00e4nis (Switzerland) on Sunday evening.\u00a0In addition, five world records were set.\u00a0The EWF team has ushered in a new era in aviation and has proven that electric flying is possible on long-haul routes.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15436\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/weltrekord-lead-image-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15436\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15436\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/weltrekord-lead-image-1-528x352.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15436\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The electric world record flight team (from left to right): Tom Albrecht,\u00a0 Morell Westermann, Kerstin Zulechner, Stefan Pieper, Marco Buholzer, Malik Aziz, Tobi Pape<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor most of them, passenger flights with small battery-powered aircraft were a long way off. To prove that it is already a reality today, seven daring electric enthusiasts set off with the first certified electric light aircraft on August 31, 2020 and reached Norderney on September 2, 2020. In the process, five world records tumbled the combustion aircraft: your aircraft used less than a quarter of the energy for the route than conventional planes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis required challenging planning: there is no infrastructure for electric aircraft on the entire route.\u00a0Therefore, two ground crews in electric cars had to drive two chargers in a rabbit and hedgehog game in front of the plane.\u00a0The aircraft flies at about 120-150 km \/ h in a straight line, the cars have to adapt to the road conditions.\u00a0Meticulous planning was necessary to minimize waiting times when loading.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15437\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/welt-rekord-charger.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15437\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15437\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/welt-rekord-charger-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15437\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chargers were carried between landings by team members in cars<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe community of the podcast <a href=\"http:\/\/cleanelectric.de\/\">CleanElectric.de helped<\/a>\u00a0in a great way by testing the suitability of the three-phase current connections at airports throughout Germany in the run-up to the flight The mainstream press clearly shows this.\u00a0 <em>(Editor\u2019s note: the public relations campaign the team managed was world-class itself.)<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>World Records<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThe results documented by the Swiss ElectroSuisse for recognition as a world record with a certified electric aircraft will be submitted to the FAI (F\u00e9d\u00e9ration A\u00e9ronautique Internationale) in the coming days:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lowest energy consumption (kWh \/ 100 km):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overall, the flight consumed 190.951 kWh of electrical energy on the entire route (including losses from the charger, approx. 15%)<\/li>\n<li>Total flown distance: 453 nm \/ 838.964 km<\/li>\n<li>This means that the average consumption is 22.76 kWh \/ 100 km, which corresponds to 2.33 l diesel (energy equivalent diesel: 9.75 kWh \/ l)<\/li>\n<li><em>(Editor\u2019s note: Europeans had a so-called \u201cthree-liter car\u201d ideal of consuming only three liters of fuel for every 100 kilometers in their econoboxes. The little Pipistrel managed to beat that ideal at a much better speed!)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Calculated over the entire distance, the Pipistrel Velis consumed the energy equivalent of 19.58 liters of diesel!<\/li>\n<li>This puts the aircraft in the range of a Tesla Model S, making it a new benchmark in aviation.\u00a0Comparable aircraft with internal combustion engines would consume about 4x to 5x more energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_15438\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/welt-rekord-in-flight.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15438\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15438\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/welt-rekord-in-flight-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><p speed on 838.956 km flown: 125.217 km \/ h (linear distance Sch\u00e4nis-Norderney: 738.37 km<em>) (Editor\u2019s note: that\u2019s 77.63 mph, much better than speeds one can attain by car through twisty roads.)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Highest flight altitude ever reached with an electric aircraft (meter above main sea level) and fastest climb rate of 0-1000m \/ 1000-2000m \/ 2000-3000m (m \/ s)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The two planned records related to the reached flight altitude and the fastest climb rate were planned for Norderney, but could not be flown due to the weather on September 3rd, 2020.\u00a0This means that the benchmark from the specification remains.\u00a0(12,000 ft altitude)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Fastest average speed over 100km (km \/ h)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>136 km \/ h <em>(84.32 nph)<\/em> on the route from Lahr Airport to Karlsruhe \/ Baden-Baden Airport<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Smallest number of intermediate stops over a distance of 700 km<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Number of stops: 11 (without start and finish)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Longest electrically flown route in 24\/48\/56 hours (km)<\/strong><\/p>\n<div p.m.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The absolutely longest distance in 12 hours was flown on the way back from Mainz-Finthen airfield to Sch\u00e4nis airfield, a total of 382.44 km <em>(237.11 miles)<\/em> (departure Mainz-Finthen airfield on September 6th, 2020 at 8:19 am, landing Sch\u00e4nis airfield at 7:23 pm )<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>48 h: 608.382 km on the first and second day<em> (377.2 miles)<\/em><br \/>\n(departure from Sch\u00e4nis airport on August 31, 2020 at 8:00 a.m., landing at M\u00fcnster-Telgte on September 1, 2020 at 4:36 p.m.)<\/li>\n<li>56 h: 838.956 km, we covered the entire distance in this time!<br \/>\n(Takeoff from Sch\u00e4nis Airfield on August 31, 2020 at 8:00 a.m., landing at Norderney Airfield on September 2, 2020 at 3:24 p.m.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Great help from the community and airport\u00a0operators<\/strong><br \/>\nThis project would not have been possible without the great support from the community of the \u201c\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanelectric.de\/\">CleanElectric<\/a>\u00a0\u201d\u00a0podcast\u00a0, operators and employees at the airfields and airports and the sponsors.<br \/>\nThe community has swarmed across Germany to test sockets at airports with their electric cars, to organize welcome events, to inform the local media or to donate money.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15439\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/welt-rekord-Oerlinghausen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15439\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15439\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/welt-rekord-Oerlinghausen-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oerlinhasen Flugplatz provided a hearty greeting to the record seekers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Many airports have specially checked or even expanded their electrical installations. The reception and the organization on site were unique. The sponsors not only gave money, but are also consistently committed to the fields of power generation, charging infrastructure or other sustainability issues. Some of them met the team at airfields, traveled with them in person or were on site when they landed on Norderney.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlights and obstacles<\/strong><br \/>\nNo pioneering feat without the unexpected: Right at the start, the rainiest day in 15 years in Sch\u00e4nis, Switzerland, was waiting for the team.\u00a0Therefore, the start had to be postponed by one day, as the runway was 30 cm under water and could only be pumped out overnight.\u00a0After that, however, further planning went smoothly.\u00a0There was a brief moment of shock at Baden-Baden Airport when the aircraft&#8217;s charger suddenly tested \u201cpositive\u201d during the explosives check.\u00a0Fortunately, this was resolved quickly &#8211; after a forklift truck had driven the device to a special X-ray machine. Finally, the fire brigade on Norderney received the electric aircraft with the rare and special honor of a water arc over the runway, then the happy team was welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Broad media interest <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fact that the topic of sustainable mobility hits a nerve was proven not least by the great interest and reports from media such as Tagesthemen, WDR, NDR, SWR, SAT.1, RTL, dpa, S\u00fcddeutsche as well as countless local newspapers, blogs, YouTubers and podcasters .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Personal words from the team<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cWe would like to say thank you very much for your commitment and your time!\u00a0This success is also your success.
