{"id":12672,"date":"2020-09-18T16:25:17","date_gmt":"2020-09-18T23:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12672"},"modified":"2020-09-18T16:25:17","modified_gmt":"2020-09-18T23:25:17","slug":"electrifly-in-grenchen-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/electrifly-in-grenchen-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Electrifly-In, Grenchen 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Grenchen, Switzerland\u2019s airfield hosted the fourth electric fly-in on that site over the weekend of September 11 and 12.\u00a0 No fewer than 16 different electric craft flew in or were on hand to greet the lucky visitors.\u00a0 Even celebrities were there, including Solar Impulse pilot Bertrand Piccard and Olympic champion, astrophysicist and pilot Dominique Gisin.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Electrifly-In Switzerland, eTrophy &amp; Symposium\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3tmyykKJhZ4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Grenchner Tagblatt (daily news) was on hand to report on the proceedings, and seems to have come away impressed with the turnout and the technology.\u00a0 The paper reported this sidelight on the recent record-setting trip from Switzerland to the North Sea of Germany in a Pipistrel Velis (also on display on the field).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15463\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/grenchen-symposium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15463\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15463\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/grenchen-symposium-528x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Symposiums over two days helped give technical insight into the sights outdoors<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cLush parties were celebrated almost everywhere, all under the sign of electromobility, which according to Westermann must be the only possible future.\u00a0Incidentally, the record aircraft had also been brought to Grenchen and could be viewed at close range.\u00a0An amusing detail on the side: Westermann said that despite enormous media coverage, around two thirds of the television teams simply missed their landing because nobody had heard them coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That idea of electric aviation\u2019s quietude was borne out in the Tagblatt\u2019s reporting.\u00a0 \u201cSunday there will again be a symposium of interesting lectures on selected topics in the field of electrically powered aviation and their future, as well as the presentation of further electric aircraft.\u00a0These will also be seen &#8211; and not heard &#8211; in the air.\u00a0Electric planes are extremely quiet.\u00a0Dominique Gisin will also be giving autographs from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.\u201d\u00a0 (And your editor is sure Bertrand Piccard obliged on request.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15462\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/grenchen-atlas-aero.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15462\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15462\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/grenchen-atlas-aero-528x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15462\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tobias Salbaum Co-Founder and CEO of Atlas Aero with display in hangar. eVTOL combines great looks with promising (promised) performance. https:\/\/atlasaero.eu\/<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Two general symposiums and detailed talks by different participants gave participants a chance to take a deep dive into this new approach to flight.\u00a0 Daily demonstration flights gave everyone a glimpse of the now and near future \u2013 including Bertrand Piccard piloting an Eck-Geiger ultralight trike.\u00a0 For a small event, there was a lot to cram into two days.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15460\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/grenchen-awards.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15460\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15460\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/grenchen-awards-528x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15460\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Awards, including first prize for the longest flight to Grenchen, were given out by Dominique Gisn.
