{"id":12692,"date":"2020-09-20T21:20:19","date_gmt":"2020-09-21T04:20:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12692"},"modified":"2020-09-20T22:39:43","modified_gmt":"2020-09-21T05:39:43","slug":"e2-glide-electrifying-sailplane-competitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/e2-glide-electrifying-sailplane-competitions\/","title":{"rendered":"E2 Glide \u2013 Electrifying Sailplane Competitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Uwe Beger, competition director for a new form of sailplane contest, wrote this in response to our entry on the Pipistrel Velis\u2019 multiple records flying from Switzerland to the North Sea.\u00a0 \u201cFrom August 29th to September 5th 2020 fifteen pilots from 6 different nations flew a cross country flying contest (E2 Glide), where the usage of electric engines (Front Electric Sustainers as well as Retractable Electric Engines) was allowed within some contingent of 2 up to 2.5 kWh per flight. Altogether the participants managed to fly a distance of nearly 10,000km (6,214 miles) with the use of 150 kWh of energy in sum.&#8221;\u00a0 That&#8217;s about 41.4 miles per kilowatt hour.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15467\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/E2-glide-lead-image-Copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15467\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15467\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/E2-glide-lead-image-Copy-528x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15467\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Last year&#8217;s Eglide competition in Pavullo, Italy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cNot that bad compared to the world records of the Pipistrel Velis Electro ;-)\u201d\u00a0 Granted that sailplanes are highly optimized vehicles that generate as little drag as anything flying &#8211; other than birds, perhaps.\u00a0 Each pilot in the E2 Glide gathering would have used an average of 10 kilowatt-hours of stored energy.\u00a0 By comparison, a dishwasher uses about 1.5 kWh per load, so each pilot used less electricity than seven dishwasher loads for the week.\u00a0 At an average cost per kWh in Europe of 21.1 cents, flying that week, other than the usual tow costs, would have consumed $2.11 in electricity.\u00a0 Electricity for the whole event would have cost $31.65.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15468\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/e2glide-normal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15468\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15468\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/e2glide-normal-528x94.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"94\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gliding without auxiliary power can lead to unplanned loss of lift, outlandings<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.e2glide.de\/de\/\">E2 Glide<\/a> is a new application of something done with sailplanes that can self launch or sustain flight with electric motors.\u00a0 Organizers explain, \u201cNew technology requires new ways of thinking. Electric drives in gliding multiply possible competitive variants. The aim of the E2GLIDE format is to take up the experience gained from the 1st eglide contest 2019 in Pavullo, Italy in a structured manner and to combine it with other ideas. The use of defined engine contingents during the competition flight enables increasing independence from the weather and high-profile racing events.\u201d\u00a0 This year&#8217;s contest was held in the\u00a0<a class=\"fnn-glossary-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.erzgebirge-gedachtgemacht.de\/en\/erzgebirge\">Erzgebirge<\/a> region of Germany &#8211; once a coal-mining area.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no coal-rolling in this competition, though.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15469\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/e2glide-electric.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15469\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15469\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/e2glide-electric-528x94.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"94\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">With auxiliary electric power, all airplanes return home at the end of a flight<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Pilots fly two-hour competitions, and have a maximum energy quota of two kilowatt-hours they can use on each challenge.\u00a0 Airplanes can use front electric sustainers (FES) or retractable electric motors.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15470\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/e2-glide-hph-shark-fes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15470\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15470\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/e2-glide-hph-shark-fes-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15470\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Czech HPH sailplane with FES extending its time in the air.
