autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This cooperative effort among Mission GO\u2019s technology and the Nevada Donor Network\u2019s (an organ procurement organization, or OPO) fearless supporters proved a huge success.\u00a0 The Network\u2019s numbers provide the impetus for this project.\u00a0 According to their web site 650 Nevadans and 110,099 Americans await transplants, ranging from hearts to pancreases.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvdonor.org\/index.html\">1,447,906 potential donors are signed up in Nevada alone<\/a> \u2013 a heartening circumstance and disheartening pun.<\/p>\n<p>MissionGO President\u00a0 Anthony Pucciarella, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2020\/09\/22\/2097189\/0\/en\/MissionGO-Completes-Longest-Organ-Delivery-Flight-via-Unmanned-Aircraft-in-Las-Vegas.html\">explained<\/a>, \u201cThese flights are an exciting step forward \u2013 the research conducted during last week\u2019s test flights are another data point to illustrate that unmanned aircraft are a reliable mode of transportation for life-saving cargo, and that MissionGO\u2019s UAS are safe for both the payload and people on the ground \u2013 even at greater distances. \u00a0We are grateful to be testing our technology with our partners at the Nevada Donor Network and look forward to what we can achieve together with more research like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15523\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/MissionGO-Nevada-Image-8a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15523\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15523\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/MissionGO-Nevada-Image-8a-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MissionGO Praxis drone carrying organs over Nevada desert<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/drone-successfully-delivers-kidney-cornea-in-las-vegas\">Deniz Yilmaz, reporting for <em>Interesting Engineering.com<\/em><\/a>, noted the tests were successfully completed on September 17.\u00a0 She reports that the first flight from\u00a0Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center to the Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican, San Mart\u00edn Campus carried research corneas.\u00a0 The second carried a \u201cresearch kidney\u201dfrom an airport to a small town in the Las Vegas desert.\u00a0 MissionGO claims it is the longest organ delivery flight in an unmanned aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the majority of organs donated in Las Vegas are sent to recipients in other states because transplant programs locally are limited.\u00a0 It\u2019s unfortunate that unpiloted aerial vehicles will probably not solve the lack of such programs, but the quick transportation of organs and tissue may open links to hospitals and clinics in the area that do perform such transplants.\u00a0 The fact that the second flight was the longest such mission for a UAV-delivered transplant payload so far helps open that possibility.\u00a0 This would also apply to other regions here and abroad, where other UAVs are delivering medical supplies daily.<\/p>\n<p>We reported here on an <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/first-drone-delivery-of-a-kidney\/\">earlier, shorter flight delivering a kidney<\/a> to a Baltimore hospital, where it was used in a successful transplant operation.\u00a0 That mission was carried out by between two hospitals and avoided the usual downtown traffic impediments.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15521\" style=\"width: 522px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/missiongo-praxis-caption.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15521\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15521\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/missiongo-praxis-caption.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15521\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The second flight delivered a research kidney from the Searchlight Airport (1L3) to a location outside of the town of Cal-Nev-Ari, marking the longest organ delivery flight in UAS history. This flight surpassed the distance of a historic flight in April 2019 when MissionGO team members Anthony Pucciarella and Ryan Henderson, in their roles at the University of Maryland UAS Test Site and in partnership with the University of Maryland Medical Center, delivered the first kidney by UAS that was then successfully transplanted into a patient.\u00a0 Photo: MissionGO<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to MissionGO, opportunities abound with this new technology. \u00a0\u201cThe second flight test underlined an exciting possibility for the future of organ transportation within the Las Vegas region specifically. The use of unmanned aircraft in a multimodal transportation chain will reduce the time between organ donation and transplantation, reduce the carbon footprint by using electric aircraft, and potentially expand organ procurement efficiency, saving more lives.
