{"id":13790,"date":"2020-10-20T18:21:38","date_gmt":"2020-10-21T01:21:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=13790"},"modified":"2020-10-20T18:21:38","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T01:21:38","slug":"wright-electric-arpa-e-and-lifes-report-card","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wright-electric-arpa-e-and-lifes-report-card\/","title":{"rendered":"Wright Electric, ARPA-E, and Life\u2019s Report Card"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If, as the infamous cartoon in the <em>New Yorker<\/em> proclaimed, \u201cMoney is life\u2019s report card,\u201d Jeff Engler\u2019s Wright Electric got a least a B+ for its current semester.\u00a0 While not as flush with cash as firms like Joby Aviation, eHang, or Volocopter, Wright received significant recognition for its initiative in designing high-efficiency electric motors with a high-frequency inverter and \u201can aggressive cooling strategy.\u201d\u00a0 The $647,039 ARPA-E grant will further Wright\u2019s work on the ARPA-E ASCEND Project.<\/p>\n<p>ASCEND stands for <a href=\"https:\/\/arpa-e.energy.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/files\/ASCEND_Project_Descriptions_FINAL.pdf\">Aviation-class Synergistically Cooled Electric-motors with iNtegrated Drives<\/a>, a sure-fire Scrabble winner and pretty tortuous acronym. Phase one of the project takes the team through the detailed design and subcomponent testing for the system.\u00a0 Phase two will see Wright build and demonstrate the system.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wright Electric reveals details for electric propulsion system testing program\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wSi1ishsRik?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Only a startup in 2017, Wright Electric has managed to partner with easyJet, a European budget airline, to develop a 186-seat electric aircraft called Wright 1.\u00a0 With others in startup mode flying six and ten-passenger aircraft and looking forward to 19-seaters, Wright\u2019s plans are ambitious indeed.\u00a0 To help create their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2019\/09\/17\/easyjet-to-launch-hybrid-route-between-amsterdam-london\/\">hybrid electric aircraft<\/a>\u00a0solution they also partnered with Airbus, hoping to reach power densities beyond 12 kilowatts (16 horsepower) per kilogram.\u00a0 <em>GreenCarCongress<\/em> offers the comparison of current jet fuel-burning turbine engines that achieve approximately 6-9 kW\/kg.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarcongress.com\/2020\/10\/20201014-wright.html\"><em>GreenCar Congress<\/em> adds that,<\/a> \u201cThe innovations across the electric propulsion system will aid the development of aircraft flying entirely on electric power. Single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft that carry 100 or more passengers account for more than 90 percent of global emissions from commercial aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is very much the market in which EasyJet is involved and fits very well with their plans with Wright \u201cto develop an all electric aircraft program as part of a shared goal to decarbonize aviation.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>David Morgan, Director of Flight Operations for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/data\/profiles\/airlines\/easyjet-u2\">easyJet<\/a>\u00a0commented: \u201cWe are excited to see this news as funding is going to be so crucial in unlocking the potential of new technologies so this marks another step on their journey to developing their all electric aircraft.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The future of aviation is electrical propulsion (easyJet CEO Johan Lundgren &amp; Wright Electric CEO)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/18RSGzy_SzQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/data\/profiles\/airlines\/easyjet-u2\">easyJet<\/a>\u00a0remains absolutely committed to more sustainable flying and we know that technology is where the answer lies for the industry. Since 2016, Wright Electric have pioneered efforts to advance aerodynamics and propulsion technologies and we remain focused on our ultimate goal to produce a fleet of zero-emissions commercial airplanes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/analysis\/reports\/aviation-sustainability-and-the-environment-capa-15-oct-2020-540774\">The Centre for Aviation reports<\/a>, \u201cSince last November,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/data\/profiles\/airlines\/easyjet-u2\">easyJet<\/a> is the first major airline to operate carbon neutral flights across its whole network. The airline is achieving this goal by offsetting the carbon emissions from the fuel used for all of its flights. The airline sees this as an interim measure until new technology becomes available to decarbonize aviation. In the meantime,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/data\/profiles\/airlines\/easyjet-u2\">easyJet<\/a>\u00a0remains focused on operating its fleet as efficiently as possible using modern, fuel efficient engines which are quieter and burn less fuel.
