His latest is pulled along by a paramotor motor.\u00a0 Because of the small aircraft\u2019s low and slow performance, the low-power (and very low noise) motor seems more than sufficient to the task.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Homemade Electric Airplane MK4\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hp7JcmwKQcU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>His fourth design, the Mk IV has no ailerons, much like an earlier ultralight, the Skypup.\u00a0 After initial tests showed shortcomings with the Mk. IV,\u00a0 quickly modified wings allowed Peter to return to the air quickly.\u00a0 As he explains, there won\u2019t be plans for this airplane because it has too many not as yet time-tested innovations.\u00a0 The hot-wire-cut foam structure and vinyl wrapped wings are an unknown in terms of longevity, so it\u2019s probably best to let Peter make his determination on that.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15588\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/sripol-skypup.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15588\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15588\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/sripol-skypup-528x292.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15588\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Skypup was Rotax 277-powered ultralight that flew without ailerons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Note the machine seems to be remarkably quiet, the OpenPPG motor drowned out by propeller noise.\u00a0 (That&#8217;s also low because of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.e-props.fr\/\">e-Prop&#8217;s design.<\/a>)*\u00a0 When Peter is able to shout down to his father and crew on the ground, he is easily heard.\u00a0 The SP140 motor comes from a paramotor supplied by <a href=\"https:\/\/openppg.com\/\">the open-source group<\/a> that started with a four-motor collapsible frame system.\u00a0 Note that the four little propellers turning over fast come through loud and clear.\u00a0 Bigger motors turning slower, larger props make less noise.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"OpenPPG Electric Paramotor Demo\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ibCC544_UIU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The OpenPPG team now sells both the four-motor and single-motor versions.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Little History<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Sripol has cranked out four airplanes in the last three years, each a learning experience and a venture into Peter\u2019s seeming insistence on trying out new things.\u00a0 His Mk. III used a small two-stroke engine, noisier than any of the electric craft.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"MY HOMEMADE airplane flies!!! MK3 design\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fqdtz3tJkbY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>His Mk. II used two small model aircraft motors, the first pair not providing the power for which he had hoped.\u00a0 There seems to be no news about what happened with the SunnySky replacements he displays toward the end of this video.\u00a0 It would be nice to know if he sorted out the landing gear issue, too.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DIY airplane Mk2 (I crashed it!) pt3\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fMVHcmYJ7mc?list=PLvyVuW1GlalGZLFtYUm0mazDucksnnual\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Finally, all the way back to Peter\u2019s first effort, this too used hobby motors and model aircraft propellers and battery packs.\u00a0 Peter has long been involved with the hobby industry and the increasing size of electrically-powered model aircraft seems to be overtaking the 100-percent scale machines.\u00a0 When displayed at AirVenture, this machine drew crowds.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"HomeMade Electric Airplane\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eNSN6qet1kE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s exciting to see someone willing to learn, open to new ideas, and willing to reflect the spirit of experimental aviation.\u00a0 We can only wonder what Mk.
