{"id":13828,"date":"2020-11-20T16:51:08","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T23:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=13828"},"modified":"2020-11-20T16:51:08","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T23:51:08","slug":"erik-eric-dr-anderson-verdego-and-hybrid-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/erik-eric-dr-anderson-verdego-and-hybrid-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Erik, Eric, Dr. Anderson, Verdego and Hybrid Power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avweb.com\/multimedia\/avweb-vodcast-why-electric-airplane-designers-are-turning-to-hybrid-drives\/\">In a recent AVWeb Vodcast<\/a>, Paul Bertorelli interviewed Embry Riddle\u2019s Dr. Pat Anderson on the topic, \u201cWhy Electric Airplane Designers Are Turning to Hybrid Drives.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Battery energy-carrying capability has not fulfilled its promise yet, according to Anderson.\u00a0 The difference in energy density between fossil fuels and batteries is still too great to fulfill missions involving more than small craft and short distances for the most part.\u00a0 This outlook caused Dr. Anderson\u2019s associates, Eric Lindbergh and Eric Bartsch to form Verdego Aero, dedicated initially to developing a Diesel-hybrid generator system.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AVweb VODCAST: Why Electric Aircraft Are Tilting Toward Hybrid Drives\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C3P0gASnWIo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>They corroborate Dr. Anderson\u2019s sense of current battery technology, their web site answering \u201cWhy hybrid?\u201d\u00a0 They explain, \u201cElectric aircraft are at the forefront of aviation technology, but the energy density of current batteries isn&#8217;t yet high enough to support many mission types or aircraft designs. \u00a0The power generation systems in the VerdeGo IDEP (Integrated Distributed Electric Propulsion) systems, which use Continental Jet-A Piston Engines, offer 4-8x the equivalent energy density of today&#8217;s battery systems. \u00a0As battery technology evolves sufficiently, the onboard hybrid power generation units can be removed and replaced with batteries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/transportup.com\/headlines-breaking-news\/vehicles-manufactures\/verdego-aero-optimizes-hybrid-propulsion-system-for-commercial-aviation\/\"><em>TransportUp.com<\/em> reports<\/a> on their recent test runs of the IDEP system on an \u201ciron bird\u201d test fixture.\u00a0 \u201cThe VerdeGo Aero team has successfully performed the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/transportup.com\/headlines-breaking-news\/vehicles-manufactures\/verdego-aero-tests-production-ready-hybrid-electric-powertrain\/\">first test runs<\/a>\u00a0of their \u2018Iron Bird\u2019 prototype diesel-hybrid (Jet A fuel) generator system in early August. Full-power testing is now underway to accelerate development of VTOL and CTOL electric aircraft utilizing VerdeGo\u2019s high-performance hybrid-electric powertrain to perform demanding commercial missions.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15646\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/verdego-hybrid-we-are-here.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15646\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15646\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/verdego-hybrid-we-are-here-528x294.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15646\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Verdego&#8217;s history of aviation powerplants &#8211; culminating in their IDEP hybrid system &#8211; with the implication there&#8217;s more to come<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Tests reached over 150 kilowatts (201 horsepower), with the certified Continental CD-265 Diesel aircraft engine offering 40-percent lower fuel consumption than \u201ccompeting turbine-hybrid offerings, while providing between four and eight times the endurance of competing battery-only powertrains.\u201d\u00a0 Since the engine can burn Jet-A fuel or other bio-based fuels, it avoids the future supply issues of LL100-fueled engines.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/news\/fact_sheets\/news_story.cfm?newsId=14754\">Since tetraethyl lead is made only for the 230,000 aircraft that still require leaded fuel<\/a> for safe operation, all that will change as that aging part of the fleet leaves service.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u201cKey Assets\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Dr. Anderson has worked on a variety of electric and hybrid projects at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, many of which are <a href=\"https:\/\/daytonabeach.erau.edu\/uli\/key-assets\">featured on a \u201ckey assets\u201d page<\/a>.\u00a0 Partnered with Lindbergh and Bartsch, the team helped create the Eco-Eagle, a hybrid conversion of a Stemme motorglider that participated in the 2011 Green Flight Challenge.\u00a0 Other projects led to the latest iteration of the \u201cIron Bird\u201d ground-based test system.\u00a0 Note they have crafted both serial and parallel hybrid systems.\u00a0 Serial hybrids use the fuel-powered engine\/generator to charge batteries that power any number of electric motors.\u00a0 Parallel systems use the engine\/generator and the electric motor(s) to propel the aircraft.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/battery-day-multi-billion-dollar-endorsement-hybrids-aviation-eric\/?fbclid=IwAR1NYOsL6bkSDtzc-HKQG7mzC9BJZwxZvc9qy4SE3JszVexopLcVXViZ_bY\">On his LinkedIn page, Bartsch makes a case<\/a> for continuing hybrid evolution while waiting for the battery revolution, using Elon Musk\u2019s recent Battery Day unveiling to bolster his argument.<\/p>\n<p>Bartsch writes, \u201cThe big news this week is that a 5X LARGER cell is being launched that is 50% cheaper to make and maybe 8% to 16% more energy dense due to form factor and chemistry modifications, and therefore the electric car market can grow further into the mass market. That&#8217;s HUGE news for cars and Tesla deserves credit for it, but that doesn&#8217;t address the gigantic performance shortfall we have in aerospace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now electric aviation is where electric cars were in the mid 1990s. Hybrid-electric cars like the Prius launched almost simultaneously with Battery-electric cars like the GM EV-1. However one of those approaches went on to sell millions of cars worth tens of billions of dollars, while the other sold a few units and was cancelled because the value equation and performance wasn&#8217;t there yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15647\" style=\"width: 522px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/verdego-continental-CD265.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15647\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15647\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/verdego-continental-CD265.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"512\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15647\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Continental CD-265, Diesel-fueled engine powers VerdeGo generator, can run on biofuels<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And because that value and performance are not yet there for electric aircraft, Bartsch would argue, current efforts should focus on an interim hybrid solution.\u00a0 Verdego Aero is his and Erik Lindbergh\u2019s firm to develop such solutions in partnership with Continental Aerospace Technologies\u2122.\u00a0 The company claims their serial hybrid system will be clean and quiet, economical, and capable, \u201cwith 4X range and 12x refuel\/recharge speed compared to all-battery approaches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Using a Continental CD-265, four-cylinder Diesel engine, the system can run on a wide range of non-fossil fuels (Diesel designed his original engine to run on peanut oil).\u00a0 Diesels generally get better \u201cmileage,\u201d their high compression squeezing more power from each gram of propellant.\u00a0 The engine weighs 198.8 kilograms (438.3 pounds), producing one horsepower, peak, for every 1.83 pounds of engine mass \u2013 comparable to the best gasoline-powered engines.<\/p>\n<p>Even with an engine and exhaust, attached generator, heat exchangers, cooling fans, and power distribution, the core IDEP unit weighs 277 kilograms (609 pounds) for a combined output of 184 kW (247 hp).\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seyerind.com\/about.html\">Partner Seyer Industries provides custom-made parts<\/a> for the IDEP package.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15648\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/verdego-dep-tiltwing.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15648\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15648\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/verdego-dep-tiltwing-528x297.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15648\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">VerdeGo&#8217;s flexibility of configuration enables placement for different weight and balance, configuration considerations<\/p><\/div>\n<p>To make their claims pay off, VerdeGo must displace the weight of batteries that would supplant the generating system and provide the greater range and endurance.\u00a0 Allowing flexibility of design, one or two IDEP packages can be installed in the aircraft and supply electrical power to any number of distributed motors.\u00a0 Applications can include conventional fixed-wing aircraft, multi-rotor systems, or designs relying on distributed electric propulsion.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Competing Systems<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>VerdeGo positions its technology against turbine hybrid-electric systems and battery-electric systems.\u00a0 The firm promotes its strengths against turbine setups as (presuming equal output):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>35% Lower carbon emissions<\/li>\n<li>35% Lower fuel burn<\/li>\n<li>30% Powertrain acquisition cost savings<\/li>\n<li>~10-20 dB Quieter (exhaust note)<\/li>\n<li>45% Lower overhaul cost per hour<\/li>\n<li>40% Lower cost per flight cycle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>VerdeGo claims its IDEP system fares well against battery-electric systems, too (again, presuming equal output):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10x Smaller battery size<\/li>\n<li>25% Lower power system weight<\/li>\n<li>12x Faster recharge\/refuel time<\/li>\n<li>4x+ Endurance\/range<\/li>\n<li>Longer battery cycle life<\/li>\n<li>Full FAA \/ EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) ENERGY reserve energy<\/li>\n<li>Up to 25% Lower cost per cycle<\/li>\n<li>Potential to be quieter (by increasing power to support low-noise rotors)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_15649\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/verdego-633.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15649\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15649\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/verdego-633-528x353.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"353\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Verdego IDEP can work with fixed wing or multi-rotor concepts<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Certainly fleet operators such as Uber would welcome operating savings in which reduced expenses for individual units are multiplied by the number of craft in the fleet. \u00a0Prospective clients willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement, \u201cVerdeGo is able to provide the equivalent of a traditional engine deck.
