{"id":13853,"date":"2020-12-13T23:33:10","date_gmt":"2020-12-14T06:33:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=13853"},"modified":"2020-12-14T08:59:34","modified_gmt":"2020-12-14T15:59:34","slug":"quantumscape-batteries-an-emerging-answer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/quantumscape-batteries-an-emerging-answer\/","title":{"rendered":"Quantumscape Batteries &#8211; an Emerging Answer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hiding in plain site next to the San Jose, California International Airport, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quantumscape.com\/\">Quantumscape<\/a> has been quietly developing a solid-state battery now emerging and trending toward mass production.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/chargedevs.com\/newswire\/with-backing-from-vw-and-jb-straubel-quantumscape-stands-out-from-the-crowd-of-new-ev-stocks\/\">With backing from Volkswagen, Bill Gates and a founding member of Tesla<\/a>, the battery company would make big splash if it used a liquid electrolyte.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why Quantumscape&#039;s Battery Revolution Is Big News\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ukdGw_hs2rM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/quantumscape-solid-state-battery\/\"><em>Wired<\/em> goes a bit dramatic<\/a> in describing the faults of batteries with liquid electrolytes.\u00a0 \u201cIF ELECTRIC VEHICLES are ever going to fully supplant gas guzzlers on the world\u2019s roads, they\u2019re going to need an entirely new type of battery. Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/welcome-to-the-era-of-supercharged-lithium-silicon-batteries\/\">steady improvements over the past decade<\/a> in the energy density and lifetimes of lithium-ion batteries, the cells in new EVs still lag behind internal combustion engines on pretty much every performance metric. Most EVs have a range of less than 300 miles, it takes more than an hour to recharge their battery packs, the cells lose nearly a third of their capacity within a decade, and they pose a serious safety risk because of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a29666731\/nhtsa-investigation-tesla-fire-reports\/\">flammable materials<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Four Advantages<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarcongress.com\/2020\/12\/20201209-qs.html\"><em>GreenCarCongress.com<\/em> is more sanguine<\/a>, but still persuasive, in its extolling the virtues of Quantumscape\u2019s solid cells.\u00a0 Explaining that Quantumscape replaces the organic separator found in conventional cells and internally creates its anode when the battery charges.\u00a0 This \u201canode-less\u201d approach supposedly lowers material costs, simplifies manufacturing and enables high energy density.\u00a0 GreenCar lists four major advantages for the solid cells:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Zero excess lithium<\/strong>. It turns out that lithium can be too much of a good thing and excessive amounts can actually reduce the performance and even cause internal damage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Long life:<\/strong> Eliminating reactions between liquid electrolyte and carbon in the carbon in the anode of conventional lithium cells enables Quantumscape batteries \u201cto last hundreds of thousands of miles of driving.\u201d Demonstrations in independent tests show Quantumscape\u2019s cells can last over 800 cycles with greater than 80-percent capacity retention.\u00a0 Consider that a battery pack enabling a week of average driving (40 mile out-and-return commute X 5 + weekend driving) allows weekly recharging.\u00a0 800 weekly cycles would give a battery life of over 15 years, and the batteries would still be capable of at least five days of driving between charges.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Low-temperature operation:<\/strong> QuantumScape\u2019s solid-state separator, designed to operate at a wide range of temperatures, has been tested to -30 degrees Celsius, temperatures that render some other solid-state designs inoperable, according to GreenCarCongress.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Safety:<\/strong> QuantumScape\u2019s battery is fire resistant because its solid-state separator is noncombustible and isolates the anode from the cathode even at very high temperatures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Quantumscape CEO on going public and why his battery technology will change the EV market\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dwWQqvpoybk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>J. B. Straubel, fifth employee at Tesla and considered one of its founders, is a member of the Quantumscape\u2019s board. He notes the anode structure in a conventional lithium-ion battery stalls progress. \u201cAlthough it\u2019s been optimized for graphite, improvements in the current technology are \u2018approaching asymptotic.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Straubel offers some hope for energizing future aircraft.\u00a0 \u201cJumping to 50-[percent] improvements in energy density is game changing. Those type of energy density, power density and charge rate improvements unlock lots of new applications. Electric aviation looks more viable when you have this kind of energy density and power.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15711\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/quantumscape-battery.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15711\" class=\"wp-image-15711\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/quantumscape-battery-528x290.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15711\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Note that anode doesn&#8217;t essentially exist until charging occurs<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Quantumscape has 200 patents and a $300 plus million funding commitment from Volkswagen.\u00a0 VW has an incentive to go full electric following its part in the Diesel debacle that implicated many European auto makers in scandals arising from the companies fudging their emissions data \u2013 often with onboard hardware and software.\u00a0 Electric cars offer a viable \u201cout\u201d to achieve compliance with emissions standards and get back in good standing with the public.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Nobel Endorsement<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em>GreenCarReports includes this high-level endorsement.\u00a0 \u201cThe hardest part about making a working solid-state battery is the need to simultaneously meet the requirements of high energy density (1,000 Wh\/L), fast charge (i.e., high current density), long cycle life (greater than 800 cycles), and wide temperature-range operation. This data shows QuantumScape\u2019s cells meet all of these requirements, something that has never before been reported.
