S. Army, Joby seems poised to demonstrate Urban Air Mobility (UAM) in a serious way.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"With Toyota\u2019s Help This Secretive Entrepreneur May Finally Give Us\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V2AHt4axFN8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In 2011 JoeBen Bevirt, founder of Joby Energy, Joby Aviation, and creator of those knobby-looking tripods you see everywhere, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kitplanes.com\/alternative-energies-29\/\">invited Patrick McLaughlin to visit his design studio<\/a>.\u00a0 Your editor got to tag along.\u00a0 On Woodpecker Ridge, north of Santa Cruz, JoeBen&#8217;s barn-like studio housed about a dozen engineers and designers all working on electricity-generating kites.\u00a0 He wore a T-shirt reading, \u201cIf you\u2019re not living on the edge, you\u2019re taking up too much room.\u201d\u00a0 That edginess has helped him, in the last decade to be a major player, with now over 500 employees in the aviation sector.\u00a0 JoeBen and Patrick discussed motor design and integration with a controller Patrick had built from off-the-shelf components.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Uber\u2019s Loss is Joby\u2019s Gain<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Joby\u2019s later success caught the eye of Uber, and their transformative deal with Joby earned attention from the world press.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2020\/dec\/09\/uber-sells-loss-making-flying-taxi-division-to-joby-aviation\"><em>The Guardian<\/em> headlined it, \u201cUber sells loss-making flying taxi division to Joby Aviation<\/a>. \u00a0Elevate disposal follows sale of autonomous vehicle division as Uber aims for profit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RupertNeate\">Rupert Neate<\/a>, \u201cWealth Correspondent\u201d for the <em>Guardian<\/em>, seems to be the proper reporter for this.\u00a0 He explains, \u201cUber has sold its\u2026 flying taxi division, Elevate, to a Californian startup as it abandons costly side projects in an attempt to turn a profit next year.\u201d\u00a0 The term \u201cstartup\u201d hardly qualifies, with Joby having committed aviation for at least the last ten years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sale to Joby Aviation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jobyaviation.com\/news\/joby-aviation-welcomes-new-75m-investment-from-uber-as-it-acquires-uber-elevate-and-expands-partnership\/\">announced late on Tuesday<\/a>, comes a day after Uber ditched ambitions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2020\/dec\/08\/uber-self-driving-car-aurora\">develop its own self-driving car<\/a> and sold its autonomous vehicle division, Advanced Technologies Group (ATG), to the startup Aurora Innovation for $4bn (\u00a33bn).\u201d\u00a0 Uber and Joby seem committed to working together for the immediate future, with Uber investing an addition $75 million in Joby as part of an \u201cexpanded partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber\u2019s chief executive, included something beyond PR-speak in his announcement. \u201cAdvanced air mobility has the potential to be exponentially positive for the environment and future generations. This deal allows us to <em>deepen our partnership with<\/em> <em>Joby, the clear leader in this field<\/em>, (italics by your editor) to accelerate the path to market for these technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While this may \u201celevate\u201d Joby, Uber is cutting back on its self-driving cars development, focusing on core businesses \u2013 ride hailing and food delivery \u2013 and cutting back on costs and employees.\u00a0 As Neate reports, Uber\u2019s \u201crobotaxis\u201d have battled public distrust after an Uber car <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2020\/sep\/16\/uber-self-driving-car-death-safety-driver-charged\">killed a woman<\/a> crossing a street in Arizona.\u00a0 Uber has also been in court with Google\u2019s self-driving car project Waymo, over alleged technology theft.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Airplane and Its Maker<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Joby, valued at $2.6 billion earlier this year, explains its prototype \u201czero emissions\u201d aircraft will carry four passengers and a pilot, have a range of up to 150 miles and a top speed of 200 mph.<\/p>\n<p>Battery-powered and sporting six large rotors on pivoting mounts, Joby\u2019s UAM was revealed after hiding in a gravel pit above Santa Cruz.\u00a0 It was moved to Hollister, California for more extensive flight tests, but will be moving once again for Air Force testing.<\/p>\n<p>Brian Garrett-Glaser of <em>Verticalmag.com<\/em> reports that in the same week it closed its agreements with Uber, <a href=\"https:\/\/transportup.com\/headlines-breaking-news\/vehicles-manufactures\/joby-aviation-acquires-uber-elevate-receives-airworthiness-approval-from-u-s-military\/\">Joby was awarded the first airworthiness approval by the U.S. Air Force<\/a> of an eVTOL aircraft. \u00a0Agility Prime, an Air Force program meant to speed up development of such technology, works to support \u201cmore rapid certification\u201d for craft such as Joby\u2019s by the Federal Aviation Administration.\u00a0 Flight testing will take place at Fort Hunter Liggett on the California coast.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The US Air Force Wants To Accelerate Urban Air Mobility. encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>JoeBen applauds the move.\u00a0 \u201cThrough [the Defense Innovation Unit] and our partnership with Agility Prime, we have access to a range called Fort Hunter Liggett, where we\u2019re able to very safely test our aircraft, and it\u2019s been a transformative capability for us that we\u2019re very grateful for.\u201d\u00a0 Between Joby and several other suppliers, the Pentagon plans to spend around $100 million yearly on such testing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-air-force-gives-lift-to-flying-taxis-11607596206\">according to the Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Whither Toyota\u2019s Technology?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>What will the money from Toyota mean?\u00a0 Will Joby take on electric technology, including proposed solid-state batteries, from the automaker?\u00a0 Several things suggest stumbling blocks along that path.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota has a history of downplaying battery electric technology, preferring instead to develop and market a successful line of hybrid electrics.\u00a0 Prius is a readily recognized brand name these days.\u00a0 At the same time, the company is releasing a major redesign of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/toyota\/mirai\">Mirai hydrogen car,<\/a> despite their being few hydrogen \u201cfilling stations\u201d outside California.\u00a0 Toyota is building a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2020\/03\/05\/1995850\/0\/en\/Development-of-the-FuelCell-Energy-Project-at-Toyota-s-Port-of-Long-Beach-Facility-to-Proceed-California-Public-Utilities-Commission-Reaffirms-that-the-Use-of-Directed-Biogas-under.html\">significant hydrogen infrastructure at its Port of Long Beach Fuel Cell Energy Project site.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Which aspects of Toyota\u2019s technology Joby chooses to exploit or ignore is an open question at this time.\u00a0 Joby has enough of its own inventiveness from which to draw.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Joby\u2019s Patents<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/evtol.news\/news\/jobys-patents-reveal-new-details\"><em>EVTOL News<\/em> reports on Joby\u2019s \u201crecent flood of patents.<\/a>\u201d \u00a0The <em>News<\/em> explains, \u201cLike many start up technology companies, these pioneers of the eVTOL industry have kept many details of their aircraft development programs very close, in order to maintain tight control of their intellectual property (IP).\u201d\u00a0 But, as reported, recent patent applications tend to reveal more details, including <a href=\"https:\/\/pdfaiw.uspto.gov\/.aiw?PageNum=0&amp;docid=20200333805\">Aircraft Control System and Method<\/a>,\u201d and the first publicly available drawings of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/evtol.news\/news\/joby-releases-flight-photo\">Joby 2.0\u00a0<\/a>tilt-propeller eVTOL.\u00a0 Of probable interest to the whole electric vehicle market, items such as the Joby <a href=\"http:\/\/appft.uspto.gov\/netacgi\/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;d=PG01&amp;p=1&amp;u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.html&amp;r=1&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;s1=%2220200339010%22.PGNR.&amp;OS=DN\/20200339010&amp;RS=DN\/20200339010\">Battery thermal management system<\/a> and their <a href=\"http:\/\/appft.uspto.gov\/netacgi\/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-adv.html&amp;r=1&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;d=PG01&amp;p=1&amp;S1=20,200,269,990&amp;OS=20,200,269,990&amp;RS=20,200,269,990\">System And Method For Aircraft Noise Mitigation<\/a> will doubtless attract attention.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.justia.com\/inventor\/joeben-bevirt?\">Other Joby patents<\/a> date from 2000 and cover all aspects of Joby\u2019s enterprises, including those flexible camera tripods and other gear.\u00a0 Many are early efforts at attaining airborne electrical collection with kites, or fledgling approaches to eVTOL flight.<\/p>\n<p>By no means an overnight sensation, JoeBen and his growing team are as capable as anyone of setting the course for future flight.\u00a0 With all the financial assistance coming their way, they should be free to move forward.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fjoby-unicorn-gains-private-military-backing%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
