{"id":13902,"date":"2021-01-14T11:03:11","date_gmt":"2021-01-14T18:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=13902"},"modified":"2021-01-14T11:03:11","modified_gmt":"2021-01-14T18:03:11","slug":"archer-aviation-gets-fiat-chrysler-backing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/archer-aviation-gets-fiat-chrysler-backing\/","title":{"rendered":"Archer Aviation Gets Fiat Chrysler Backing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another eVTOL?\u00a0 Among the many battery- and solar-powered entries at this year\u2019s (virtual) Consumer Electronics Show, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flyarcher.com\">Archer Aviation<\/a> has entered the electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (EVTOL) market with Fiat Chrysler backing.\u00a0 It\u2019s being discreet about it, however, and reveals little detail.<\/p>\n<p>The company willingly shares its mission statement, though.\u00a0 \u201cTo fix traffic and create a fully renewable transportation solution, we\u2019re designing, manufacturing, and operating advanced electric aircraft that can travel 60 miles at 150 mph, all with today\u2019s technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They present only one picture of their design, a head-on shot on a black backdrop.\u00a0 We can see the six large rotors blanketing the leading edge of the wing, but wonder how and where the six vertical lift rotors are hiding.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15848\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/archer-aviation-lead-image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15848\" class=\"wp-image-15848\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/archer-aviation-lead-image-528x262.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15848\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Most used image gives &#8220;glamor shot&#8221; approach used in high-end car ads, but provides little detail<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/evtolinsights.com\/2021\/01\/archer-to-work-with-fiat-chrysler-automobiles-on-its-first-evtol-aircraft-expected-to-be-unveiled-in-early-2021\/\"><em>eVTOL Insights<\/em><\/a> provides more information on the planned craft\u2019s specifications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Aircraft type: eVTOL<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Piloting: Will be piloted in the beginning and will have autonomous capability in the future<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Capacity: 4<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Cruise speed: 150 mph (241 km\/h)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Range: 60 miles (nearly 100 km)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Propellers: 12<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Maximum takeoff weight: 7,000 lbs (3,175 kg)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Windows: Panoramic window spectacular views<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Wing: High wing<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Tail: V-tail<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Safety features: Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP), provides safety through redundancy for its passengers and\/or cargo. DEP means having multiple propellers and motors on the aircraft so if one or more motors or propellers fail, the other working motors and propellers can safely land the aircraft. In addition, the company is increasing the safety of their aircraft by eliminating critical parts, increasing component reliability and designing safe aerial batteries.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Archer\u2019s wording on \u201celiminating critical parts\u201d might be reconsidered.\u00a0 Do they mean eliminating unnecessary parts?)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15849\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/archer-specs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15849\" class=\"wp-image-15849\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/archer-specs-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15849\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graphic explains expected performance with math overlay<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>Big Money Backing<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Fiat Chrysler America (FCA) has announced it is investing in Archer.\u00a0 The partnership should allow Archer to press forward with its plans to have an 80-percent scale test vehicle flying in 2021.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ainonline.com\/aviation-news\/business-aviation\/2021-01-12\/fiat-chrysler-backs-archers-evtol-aircraft\">AINonline.com reports<\/a>, \u201cIn a January 12 announcement, FCA, which makes Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles, did not say whether it will actually manufacture Archer\u2019s aircraft. \u2018Archer will benefit from FCA\u2019s low-cost supply chain and advanced composite material capability, and design and engineering expertise,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA spokesman for Archer told <em>AIN<\/em>. \u2018We have already tapped into FCA\u2019s extensive design expertise, collaborating with the company on elements of the cockpit design of our first full-scale aircraft.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/archer-evtol-white-background.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-15850\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/archer-evtol-white-background-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Benefitting from expertise of Airbus\u2019s A3 Vahana program engineers and designers, co-founders and co-CEOs Brett Adcock and Adam Goldstein have been accused of \u201cpoaching\u201d other talent in the area.\u00a0 The former \u201cheadhunters,\u201d having come from the financial talent recruiting firm they built and sold, know how to attract skilled employees.\u00a0 According to Forbes, the pair, \u201cHave lured dozens of top engineers away from electric air taxi startups like Joby and Boeing-backed Wisk with rich compensation packages that include signing bonuses of two to three times annual salary and talk of connections to deep-pocketed investors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One with particularly deep pockets sees a future in the company.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jeremybogaisky\/2020\/05\/21\/archer-walmart-marc-lore-electric-air-taxi\/?sh=1cb66cfd510e\">Marc Lore, Walmart\u2019s e-commerce chief and founder of <em>Jet.com<\/em><\/a>, has apparently invested a substantial but undisclosed amount. \u00a0(Emulating much of the rest of the program.)<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Coming: A Possible Name Change<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Piper Aircraft\u2019s Archer has been around since 1976, giving it seniority in the flying world.\u00a0 It\u2019s understandable then that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ainonline.com\/aviation-news\/business-aviation\/2020-09-03\/piper-sues-evtol-startup-archer-trademark-violation\">Piper would sue this new, upstart company<\/a> for infringing on its federally-registered trademark name.\u00a0 AIN reports, \u201cIn a case filed in the U.S. District Court in Delaware, where California-based Archer was incorporated, Piper alleges that the use of the name for the four-seat, fixed-wing eVTOL infringes its federally-registered trademark and also its legal rights in the state of Florida, where the longstanding general aviation manufacturer is headquartered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Archer has yet to name its eVTOL craft, and we hope this kerfuffle over naming rights abates in time for the first flight later this year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Farcher-aviation-gets-fiat-chrysler-backing%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
