The next phase will transform a Cessna 210 into an eSTOL with Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP). DEP enables operations into and out of very short runways by providing more control at slower airspeeds.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15977\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Airflow-landing-dispersion-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15977\" class=\"wp-image-15977\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Airflow-landing-dispersion-528x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15977\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In one week, Artificial Intelligence enabled tighter landings within a prescribed area,\u00a0 Dispersion dropped from 41 feet to 21 feet<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Peter Kalogiannis, co-founder and CTO of Airflow, explains shortcuts taken to expedite testing of power and control systems.\u00a0 \u201cSelecting the Cessna 210 saves us the effort to design and build the pieces that already work, such as the cockpit, fuselage, landing gear, etc. We&#8217;ll concentrate on changing the rest to make it an eSTOL aircraft. This aircraft represents the first step towards bringing to market aircraft designed for sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Seeing a Different Landscape<\/h4>\n<p>eVTOL and eCSTOL flyers (human or automated) will see a similar visual, but very different operational landscape.\u00a0 Rooftops and open areas that allow vertical liftoffs and landings will be able to accommodate craft that can land within the same types of space constraints.\u00a0 Although eCSTOL flight may require sites with longer approach corridors, the same general landing areas will suit both vertical and conventional operations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15980\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/airflow-approach-paths.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15980\" class=\"wp-image-15980\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/airflow-approach-paths-528x242.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15980\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Even helicopters and eVTOLs use angled approach and departure paths to save power, increase range<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Surprisingly, approach angles seem to favor eCSTOL aircraft and allow their use in a possibly wider selection of \u201cairports.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>New Partners<\/h4>\n<p>Having pulled members from Airbus, Eclipse Aviation, Northrop Grumman, Uber Elevate, Airware, and Scaled Composites, Airflow has an awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of flight technologies.\u00a0 This may have helped inform their decision to<a href=\"https:\/\/skiesmag.com\/press-releases\/airflow-partners-with-verdego-aero\"> partner with VerdeGo Aero,<\/a> an aerospace electric powertrain technology company. Airflow Photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verdegoaero.com\/\">VerdeGo Aero\u2019s diesel (Jet-A) hybrid system<\/a> combines a 180 kilowatt generator with a high-power battery pack that reduces emissions and fuel burn by 35 per cent compared to conventional turbine powertrains. Integrating VerdeGo\u2019s hybrid-electric powertrain to the eSTOL platform enhances the aircraft\u2019s mission capabilities by extending range to four to ten times that of a battery-electric system.<\/p>\n<p>Marc Ausman, Airflow CEO, explained, &#8220;Our ability to rapidly move cargo from a warehouse directly to another warehouse helps e-commerce companies centralize inventory and reduce carrying costs. These capabilities are made possible by continued strategic partnerships like VerdeGo Aero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric Bartsch, CEO and co-founder of VerdeGo Aero confirmed. \u201cVerdeGo Aero is excited to be applying its hybrid-electric powertrain systems for the Airflow eSTOL aircraft.
