{"id":13959,"date":"2021-03-10T21:36:47","date_gmt":"2021-03-11T04:36:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=13959"},"modified":"2021-03-10T21:36:47","modified_gmt":"2021-03-11T04:36:47","slug":"defeating-dendrites-going-with-the-flow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/defeating-dendrites-going-with-the-flow\/","title":{"rendered":"Defeating Dendrites &#8211; Going with the Flow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One thing stalling battery development, dendrites, may have met their match if University of California at Davis researchers have their way.\u00a0 Jiandi Wan\u2019s research group allowed ions to flow through a microfluidic channel near a battery\u2019s cathode to prevent dendrite growth.\u00a0 According the group\u2019s paper, this, \u201c\u2026can potentially expand the safety and lifespans of these next-generation rechargeable batteries.\u201d\u00a0 Their research may lead to safe lithium metal batteries, promising higher power and energy densities, but also struggling with safety issues.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13960\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13960\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13960\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dendrite-closeup-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dendrite-closeup-528x297.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dendrite-closeup-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dendrite-closeup-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dendrite-closeup.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13960\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dendrites can grow to point where they short circuit battery and start fires<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lithium metal batteries might potentially produce twice the energy of lithium-ion batteries, but have greater risks because of the growth of tree-like dendrites on the cathode.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/pvbuzz.com\/fluid-solution-to-dendrite-growth-in-lithium-metal-batteries\/\">An article in <em>PV Buzz<\/em> explains,<\/a> \u201cWhen they charge, some ions are reduced to lithium metal at the cathode surface and form irregular, tree-like microstructures known as dendrites, which can eventually cause a short circuit or even an explosion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Associate professor Jiandi Wan\u2019s paper in <a href=\"http:\/\/10.1126\/sciadv.abf6941\"><em>Science Advances<\/em><\/a> explains the problem and the fix.\u00a0 His Department of Chemical Engineering team theorized, according to PV Buzz,\u201d\u2026that dendrite growth is caused by the competition of mass transfer and reduction rate of lithium ions near the cathode surface. When the reduction rate of ions is much faster than the mass transfer, it creates an electroneutral gap called the space-charged layer near the cathode that contains no ions. The instability of this layer is thought to cause dendrite growth, so reducing or eliminating it might reduce dendrite growth and therefore extend the life of a battery.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16088\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dendrites-suppression.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16088\" class=\"wp-image-16088\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dendrites-suppression.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"414\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16088\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wan&#8217;s team, by flowing ions through microchannel, suppressed dendrite growth appreeciably<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The apparently uncontrolled and random deposition grows the dendrites in relation to the electrical activity, greater current seems to increase the growth.\u00a0 Flowing ions through a microchannel reduced dendrite growth by up to 99 percent. \u00a0\u00a0The microchannel consists of two strips of metallic foil.<\/p>\n<p>The bad news \u2013 it really is not practical at this point to \u201cdirectly incorporate microfluidics in real batteries.\u201d\u00a0 The Chemical Engineering research group is searching for alternative ways to \u201cintroduce local flows near the cathode surface\u201d and eliminate the space charged layer thought to be responsible for dendrite growth.<\/p>\n<p>Wan concluded, \u201cWe are quite excited to explore the new applications of our study. \u00a0\u00a0We are already working on design of the cathode surface to introduce convective flows.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fdefeating-dendrites-going-with-the-flow%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
