{"id":13970,"date":"2021-03-20T19:19:03","date_gmt":"2021-03-21T02:19:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=13970"},"modified":"2021-03-22T21:19:32","modified_gmt":"2021-03-23T04:19:32","slug":"hypoints-radical-radial-fuel-cell-solution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/hypoints-radical-radial-fuel-cell-solution\/","title":{"rendered":"Hypoint\u2019s Radical Radial Fuel Cell Solution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hypoint.com\/\">Hypoint<\/a> proclaims, \u201cWe make zero emission air transport possible.\u201d\u00a0 They do this by, \u201cBuilding a next generation hydrogen fuel cell system that can deliver<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cBoth high specific power:\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c2,000 Watts\/kilogram and high energy density<\/li>\n<li>\u201c1,500 Watt-hours\/kilogram<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_16142\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/hypoint-energy-power-diagram-airworthy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16142\" class=\"wp-image-16142\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/hypoint-energy-power-diagram-airworthy-528x305.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"349\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hypoint&#8217;s comparison between existing fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries and their new system<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Exactly what aircraft designers are looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These numbers exceed what the best batteries can manage at this time, and according to <a href=\"https:\/\/docsend.com\/view\/t9aw2mk\">the company\u2019s white paper,<\/a> even better performance is on the way.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Batteries vs. Fuel Cells<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Hypoint proclaims, \u201cThe age of zero-emission aviation is currently being prevented by the industry\u2019s reliance on Li-ion batteries, which have a fundamental barrier at the chemistry level.\u201d\u00a0 The firm limits cell performance to 200 Whr\/kg, although Bye Aerospace claims 260 Whr\/kg for their full battery packs, battery management systems and all.<\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk disagrees.\u00a0 CNBC reports, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/TSLA\">Tesla<\/a> co-founder and CEO Elon Musk has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/02\/21\/musk-calls-hydrogen-fuel-cells-stupid-but-tech-may-threaten-tesla.html\">dismissed hydrogen fuel cells as \u2018mind-bogglingly stupid,<\/a>\u2019 and that is not the only negative thing he has had to say about the technology. He has called them \u2018fool cells,\u2019 a \u2018load of rubbish,\u2019 and told Tesla shareholders at an annual meeting years ago that \u2018success is simply not possible.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2020 NASA iTech Cycle II Forum - HyPoint\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iPwKVrjYVaE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Better Performing, Hotter Fuel Cells<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Obviously, the folks at Hypoint are not dissuaded by the negativity.\u00a0 Perhaps most important in the newest fuel cells from Hypoint, \u201cWe are using a next-generation high temperature membrane (HTPEM) instead of a low temperature membrane (LTPEM), which increases the efficiency of a cooling system by at least 300%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raising the temperature to increase cooling efficiency seems counterintuitive.\u00a0 On an over-simplified level, many low-temperature fuel cells use liquid cooling to disperse heat.\u00a0 That adds complications and weight, with a \u201ctraditional\u201d LTPEM\u2019s cooling system forming 53 percent of the fuel cell\u2019s mass.\u00a0 Hypoint\u2019s use of HTPEMs and \u201cturbo-cooling\u201d them reduces the cooling system to only six percent of the total mass.\u00a0 Hypoint claims a 61-percent reduction in total weight for its high-temperature fuel cells.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Radial Arrangement<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Early on, aviation pioneers attempted to lower the mass and size of engines.\u00a0 The radial engine was one answer, arranging cylinder around a central crankshaft which drove the propeller.\u00a0 Large cooling fins directly in the cooling blast of air helped keep temperatures in a working range.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16140\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/hypoint-radial-engine-joe-palermo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16140\" class=\"wp-image-16140\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/hypoint-radial-engine-joe-palermo-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"403\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Radial engine on the nose of a Stearman biplane. Cooling fins rely on air to dissipate heat<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hypoint has adapted this arrangement with multiple fuel cells around a central fan which forces air over the high-temperature membranes and out from each cell.\u00a0 This makes for a compact arrangement similar to that of early radial engines, but with far greater efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>This turbo air-cooled (TAC) power system is the first, according to Hypoint, to use both air-cooling and turbocharging.\u00a0 Arranging the system in a radial fashion works well with their other material innovations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16141\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Hypoint-exploded-view.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16141\" class=\"wp-image-16141\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Hypoint-exploded-view-528x297.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16141\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hypoint&#8217;s arrangement of fuel cells resembles radial engine, uses turbocharged air from central high-pressure fan to cool system<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hypoint\u2019s specialized fuel cell bipolar plates work at 160\u00b0C (320\u00b0 F) rather than the low-temperature cell\u2019s 70\u00b0 C (158\u00b0 F), allowing for greater thermal efficiency.\u00a0 Both are lower temperatures than those found under the cowling of any internal-combustion powerplant.
