{"id":14000,"date":"2021-04-12T22:44:56","date_gmt":"2021-04-13T05:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14000"},"modified":"2021-04-12T22:44:56","modified_gmt":"2021-04-13T05:44:56","slug":"two-wood-aircraft-leading-to-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/two-wood-aircraft-leading-to-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Wood Aircraft Leading to the Future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two French manufacturers are reverting to <em>bois et toile<\/em> (wood and fabric) for ultra-modern aircraft.\u00a0 Both of their aircraft will be electrically powered, and both will use non-traditional approaches to construction.\u00a0 In the meantime, both have fairly traditional demonstration models.<\/p>\n<p>The French have done wonders with wooden aircraft from the very beginning of aviation.\u00a0 Santos Dumont built the petite Demoiselle with bamboo longerons, for instance, and Henri Mignet crafted his diminutive Pou du Ciel (flea of the sky, or flying flea) from available wood.\u00a0 After World War Two, Messrs Joly and Delemontez fashioned a small single-seater, the Jodel D-9, from wood and ply and powered it with converted VW Kubelwagen engines, Jeep-like German vehicles which littered scrap yards and former battlefields.\u00a0 Avions Mauboussin and Aura Aero use more modern power systems and vastly different approaches to <em>bois and toile<\/em> structures.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16271\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/jodel-d9.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16271\" class=\"wp-image-16271\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/jodel-d9-528x379.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16271\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Jodel D-9 was part of the rebirth of postwar French amateur aviation, being built by hundreds of enthusiasts.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>Mauboussin<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Mauboussin goes back to prewar times with small aircraft that look as though they could have come from a home shop\u00a0\u00a0 Even their latest endeavors are aerobatic machines with wood and carbon fiber frames that combine traditional looks with modern aerodynamics.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16276\" style=\"width: 506px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Mauboussin-poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16276\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16276\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Mauboussin-poster-496x704.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"496\" height=\"704\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A <em>tres<\/em> racy poster for Mauboussin fly-in highlights pretty woman, Porsche, and historic airplane.\u00a0 Mauboussin went on to develop jet trainers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The company has two machines, one very much realized and the other on the virtual ramp.\u00a0 They make a mission statement for both.\u00a0 \u201cAl\u00e9rion M1h and Alcyon M3c are personal means of transport dedicated to interurban mobility.\u00a0 Their performance allows them to cover a large distance and operate from a reduced infrastructure: small airfield, heliport, sports field, parking lot, public park or lawn of a residence.\u201d\u00a0 The company foresees reduced environmental impact from their machines through the use of natural materials, reduced fuel consumption, and minimum emissions \u201cthanks to electricity and hydrogen.\u201d\u00a0 Although the video is in French only, the graphics convey the tidy surroundings in which the airplane is being developed.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Belfort : le projet d&#039;avion hybride \u00e0 l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne de Mauboussin soutenu par l&#039;Etat\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D2VeFC7z_6Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avionsmauboussin.fr\/en\/concept-2\/\">The Al\u00e9rion M1h<\/a> is a modern interpretation of traditional two-seat touring aircraft, with a modern adaptation of the fuselage in wood, but wrapped in high-strength composite materials and \u201cbio-sourced resins.\u201d\u00a0 Power will come from a single Zephyr hydrogen-hybrid engine system \u2013 not yet well defined or seeing the light of day.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.compositesworld.com\/news\/avions-mauboussin-launches-stol-hybrid-hydrogen-aircraft\"><em>Composites World<\/em> reports<\/a> the powerplant will produce a total power of 80 kilowatts (110 horsepower), for electrically-powered takeoffs and hydrogen fueled cruising speeds of 250 kilometers per hour (155 mph).\u00a0 The company suggests trips like Belfort to Toulouse (around 390 air miles) would take two and a half hours.\u00a0 By car, the shortest route is 795 kilometers (493 miles) and takes at least nine hours.<\/p>\n<p>A press release from Mauboussin explains their schedule for the next seven years. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fuelcellsworks.com\/news\/avions-mauboussin-designs-a-new-hydrogen-propulsion-system-for-aircraft\/\">The creation of Z\u00e9phyr (hybrid hydrogen propulsion)<\/a> will lead to the marketing of Al\u00e9rion M1h (the first of the Mauboussin aircraft), in 2025 for the kerosene hybrid version and 2027 in the hydrogen hybrid version.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlcyon M3c will be launched in 2026 for the kerosene hybrid version and 2028 for the hydrogen hybrid version.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16273\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/mauboussin-alcyon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16273\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16273\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/mauboussin-alcyon-528x298.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In artist&#8217;s rendering Mauboussin Alcyon shows off its grass field abilities<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The company promises, \u201cAvions Mauboussin will offer the Z\u00e9phyr propulsion drive train to other aircraft manufacturers, helicopter manufacturers, manufacturers of VTOL flying taxis or drones, as well as other manufacturers in the maritime and automotive sectors.\u201d\u00a0 This would help build a customer base for the powerplant and help reduce manufacturing costs through economies of scal<\/p>\n<p>Maurboussin\u2019s Alcyon M3c makes no bows to tradition, exhibiting thoroughly modern, if not outright futuristic, lines.\u00a0 It will carry five in probable luxury, lift off from an STOL (short takeoff and landing) airstrip and cruise at 370 kilometers per hour (229 mph) for up to 1,500 kilometers (932 miles).\u00a0 It will share with the M1h HOTAS (Hands On Throttle and Stick) control, a heads-up display and Wi-Fi, satellite and 4G connectivity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aura Aero<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>French aerospace firm Aura Aero is a newcomer, as is its intended battery source.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/verkor.com\/\">Verkor, although new to the field<\/a>, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy-storage.news\/news\/startup-verkor-teams-up-with-consultancy-capgemini-for-16gwh-capacity-smart\">already affiliated with established groups<\/a> like digital software company Capgemini and Schneider Electric. It\u2019s not necessarily an innovative firm, <a href=\"https:\/\/chargedevs.com\/newswire\/startup-verkor-plans-to-build-16-gwh-battery-gigafactory-in-france\/\">starting as a \u201cfast follower,\u201d<\/a> using existing technology and manufacturing techniques to fill in gaps in needed production.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16278\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/AuraAero-19-seater.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16278\" class=\"wp-image-16278\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/AuraAero-19-seater-528x297.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16278\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aura Aero&#8217;s 19-seat commuter liner bears resemblance to AEG&#8217;s Bird of Prey, would provide swift regional transit<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Its aerodynamic partner is starting with a series of two-seat aerobatic aircraft much like Mauboussin. Aura Aero has a slightly more ambitious follow-up, though, with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/aerospace\/frances-aura-aero-unveils-19-seat-electric-aircraft-development-plan\/142991.article\">19-passenger, six-motor regional airliner<\/a>.\u00a0 Aura\u2019s enterprise will begin in an historic hangar at Toulouse Francazal, where the hangar\u2019s rebirth as the center of a high-enterprise soon take place.\u00a0 Like many other energy-efficient startups, Aura Aero is being supported by its local region, the Occitanie, known for its Pyrenees Mountains.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Inauguration de la ligne d\u2019assemblage d&#039;AURA AERO dans le b\u00e2timent HM7\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KBcKivYdBF8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Electric-Flight.eu<\/em> reports, \u201cAura Aero plans to become a \u2018key player\u2019 in the low-carbon sector, it says, ambitiously aiming to carry out a maiden flight of the 19-seat transport in 2024 for service entry in 2026.\u201d\u00a0 Its partnership with Verkor highlights its use of their \u201cspecially-developed batteries.\u201d\u00a0 The company also proposes a freighter version of the larger craft.<\/p>\n<p>Both companies show that wood aircraft are in no way outdated, and can suit modern needs quite well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Ftwo-wood-aircraft-leading-to-the-future%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two French manufacturers are reverting to bois et toile (wood and fabric) for ultra-modern aircraft.\u00a0 Both of their aircraft will be electrically powered, and both will use non-traditional approaches to construction.\u00a0 In the meantime, both have fairly traditional demonstration models.
