{"id":14011,"date":"2021-04-21T22:02:55","date_gmt":"2021-04-22T05:02:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14011"},"modified":"2021-04-21T22:02:55","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T05:02:55","slug":"beta-blade-cut-deal-20-alias","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/beta-blade-cut-deal-20-alias\/","title":{"rendered":"BETA and Blade Cut Deal for 20 Alia\u2019s"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Business as Unusual<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>BETA Technologies made a big move from its highly complex Ava to a simpler Alia, and managed to snag an initial order for up to 150 of its new craft from United Parcel Service (UPS).\u00a0 This was followed by the signing of a <a href=\"https:\/\/vermontbiz.com\/news\/2021\/april\/13\/beta-inks-deal-secure-first-20-passenger-electric-vertical-aircraft-eva-blade\">binding agreement with Blade<\/a> for another 20 craft for passenger service.<\/p>\n<p><em>Vermont Business Magazine<\/em> reports that <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3126834-1&amp;h=1709699815&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.beta.team%2F&amp;a=BETA+Technologies\">BETA Technologies <\/a>started with its first customer and partner, United Therapeutics, which will rely on BETA&#8217;s aircraft to deliver organs for human transplantation.\u00a0 High speed and reliability are obvious premiums in this endeavor.\u00a0 Recently, United Parcel Service (UPS) announced it reserved the right to purchase 150 of BETA&#8217;s aircraft, with the first 10 to be delivered beginning in 2024. UPS also purchased BETA&#8217;s charging stations as part of an integrated solution.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16337\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Beta-ChargingStation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16337\" class=\"wp-image-16337\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Beta-ChargingStation-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BETA&#8217;s charging station is modular, functional and just right for its intended purpose<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gaining government backing, the United States Air Force Agility Prime program continues testing BETA\u2019s machines.\u00a0 The program, \u201cMarshals government resources to accelerate commercialization of air mobility vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/futureflight.aero\/news-article\/2021-04-07\/ups-commits-operating-betas-alia-evtol-aircraft-package-deliveries?\">Blade founder and CEO Rob Wiesenthal explains<\/a> his company\u2019s plans for Alia. \u00a0\u201cBlade is focused on its transition from conventional rotorcraft to electric vertical aircraft [EVA].\u00a0 Beta\u2019s delivery commitment date in 2024 is ahead of our current projected deployment of EVA in 2025. The transaction, consistent with our asset-light operating model, allows Blade to leverage our significant flight volumes and third-party financing partners to support the purchase of Beta aircraft by our operator partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Short History of Ava<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Ava was a complex derivation of a Lancair ES and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rddent.com\/\">RDD-developed LX-7 wing<\/a>.\u00a0 Its eight independently-powered rotors were controlled by an undoubtedly complex hardware and software network.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16332\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/beta-ava-rotor-pivots.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16332\" class=\"wp-image-16332\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/beta-ava-rotor-pivots-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"403\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Complexity of structure and operation of Ava&#8217;s pivoting rotors is apparent in this view<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The 4,000 pound eVTOL (electric Vertical Take Off and Landing) aircraft stood atop long, spindly legs to help its eight large rotors clear the runway and its power plants pivoted on stalks long enough to help those rotors run clear of the fuselage.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Simplified Alia<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Alia\u2019s rotors are are oriented horizontally to provide vertical thrust only.\u00a0 Its single pusher propeller provides thrust for forward flight.\u00a0 This configuration is greatly simplified from Ava\u2019s, since no motors or cabling have to move to create the desired motion.\u00a0 Beta\u2019s web site promotes Alia as \u201cThe Future of Flight,\u201d and explains, \u201cThe ALIA electric vertical aircraft is just simple enough to be revolutionary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Secrets of the Amazing New Beta Technologies Electric EVTOL Prototype Airplane\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7HKD5WsTqOQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Back in the 1920\u2019s William Bushnell Stout, designer of the Ford Trimotor among other things, famously said, \u201cSimplicate and add more lightness.\u201d\u00a0 This challenge seems to have inspired Beta\u2019s designers.\u00a0 Although the aircraft is heavier than the Ava, it is much simpler.\u00a0 In keeping with Stout\u2019s dictum, \u201cBETA Team Members achieve[d] their goals by removing every unnecessary element.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alia can carry up to 1,400 pounds or up to 200 cubic feet of cargo as far as 250 miles and recharge in 50 minutes.\u00a0 It utility factor should be high.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>An In-House Design<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>BETA\u2019s power system is an in-house design and creation, \u201cThe cornerstone of our ability to fly long distances economically and in an environmentally friendly way.\u201d\u00a0 Air cooled and redundant, Alia\u2019s motors are controlled by dual inverters.\u00a0 BETA assures us, \u201cWith safety as priority, our inverters are designed with 3 lines of communication with the system and built with redundancy in case of failure.\u201d\u00a0 All independent power systems are fed by a set of \u201cenvironmentally sealed\u201d battery blocks under Alia\u2019s cabin floor.<\/p>\n<h4>Networking is Important<\/h4>\n<p>Since delivering organs, packages and complete people requires infrastructure, BETA has designed, \u201cA thoughtfully constructed network of charging systems to recharge the aircraft, pilots, and crew enables electric flight.\u201d\u00a0 Their Rapid Charging Charging systems are a bit like Tesla\u2019s Superchargers, and can be deployed on- or off-airport.\u00a0 Hooked up to a 480 Volt AC, three-phase, 60 Hertz line, the charger can deliver up to 450 Amps and a boost charge current of 500 Amps. \u00a0The charger can connect to a vehicle through CCS or CHAdeMO plugs on an ADR 2.0 Demand Response Interface.\u00a0 Users can pay through credit cards, phone apps, or an RFID tag.<\/p>\n<h4>Multi-Featured Charging Pad<\/h4>\n<p>BETA Technologies explains their highly functional modular charging station and landing pad.\u00a0 \u201cWith thoughtful consideration to the needs of pilots and crews, multi-featured charging systems include workshop and maintenance space, lounge area and short-term lodging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beta Technologies eVTOL Charging Station\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eHoar1cCE54?feature=oembed\" width=\"742\" height=\"417\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Highly modular and using nicely modified shipping containers to accommodate equipment and personnel, each station includes the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Battery energy storage<\/li>\n<li>Generator<\/li>\n<li>Elevated landing deck<\/li>\n<li>Pilot Lounge<\/li>\n<li>Sleeping Accommodations<\/li>\n<li>Maintenance &amp;
