{"id":14014,"date":"2021-04-25T23:09:30","date_gmt":"2021-04-26T06:09:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=14014"},"modified":"2021-04-25T23:09:30","modified_gmt":"2021-04-26T06:09:30","slug":"bye-oxis-safran-create-electric-business-liner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/bye-oxis-safran-create-electric-business-liner\/","title":{"rendered":"Bye, Oxis, Safran Create Electric Business Liner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bye Aerospace, Oxis Energy and the Safran Group have introduced an, \u201cEight-seat all-electric twin turbo-prop class airplane, the eFlyer 800\u2122.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a fascinating combination of new airframe, new batteries, and new motors.\u00a0 An American airplane powered by English batteries and propelled by French motors will be an international accomplishment, to say the least.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Airplane<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Maybe not coincidentally with Earth Day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jeremybogaisky\/2021\/04\/21\/bye-eflyer-king-air-oxis-electric-turboprop\/?cdlcid=5f14545a6be319c3c34a3153&amp;utm_campaign=dailydozen&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;sh=8b203541b8f7\"><em>Forbes<\/em> magazine ran the following introduction<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cBye Aerospace has announced an eight-seat all-electric twin turbo-prop class airplane, the eFlyer 800\u2122, in response to growing demands for regional all-electric airplanes with significantly reduced operating costs, plus increased capacity and utility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bye eFlyer 800 electric twin\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WfdsF0SEfNc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The craft, roughly equivalent to a Beechcraft King Air 260 in every respect except range, will be a fully-electric luxury machine capable of carrying one or two pilots and up to seven passengers.\u00a0 Cruising at up to 320 knots (368 mph) at 35,000 feet would make quick business of its 500 nautical mile (575 statute mile) range.\u00a0 It will have to slow down to 280 knots to meet that 500 miles and still have 45-minutes of instrument flying regulation (IFR) reserve, though.\u00a0 eFlyer\u2019s 3,400 feet per minute rate of climb will take it to cruising altitude quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Bye Aerospace says, \u201cAerodynamic efficiency is twice that of a typical legacy turboprop aircraft of similar size.\u201d \u00a0The 800\u2019s high overall propulsive system efficiency results from its high motor efficiency and low cooling drag.<\/p>\n<p>Packing a full-airplane recovery parachute adds a safety backup that should rarely be needed, thanks to dual redundant motor windings and quad-redundant battery packs.\u00a0 Further safety elements include an emergency auto-land system, software with an \u201cintelligent algorithm ensuring envelope protection, terrain avoidance and routing for [that] emergency auto-land.\u201d Optional solar cells could supplement the aircraft\u2019s range and in-wheel electric taxiing could enable main battery use for flight operations only.<\/p>\n<p>Operators will appreciate the low operating cost of the eFlyer 800, about one-fifth that of \u201ctraditional twin turboprops.\u00a0 The craft, intended for the air-taxi, air-cargo, regional and charter aircraft markets, \u201c\u2026Is the first all-electric propulsion technology airplane that achieves twin-turboprop performance and safety with no CO<sub>2<\/sub>and extremely low operating costs,\u201d according to George E. Bye, Bye Aerospace CEO.\u00a0 He adds, \u201cThis type of remarkable economy and performance is made possible by the electric propulsion system and advanced battery cell technology that results in significantly higher energy densities.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Batteries<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.futureflight.aero\/news-article\/2021-04-20\/oxis-close-delivering-higher-energy-lithium-sulfur-batteries-electric\">Charles Alcock reports in <em>Future Flight<\/em><\/a> that Oxis Energy, associated with Bye Aerospace for the last five years, \u201cexpects to start delivering its solid-state lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries to customers for trial applications in the fall of 2021. The UK company says the technology will offer significantly improved performance for electric aircraft developers, compared with existing lithium-ion batteries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Batteries for Electric Aviation: Where does the battery technology stand and where it is heading\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NU5e4ZQursQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Lithium-sulfur cells have a higher energy density than lithium-ion cells.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/perlanproject.org\/\">The Perlan Project<\/a> used lithium-sulfur batteries on Perlan 1 and early on in the Perlan 2 because of that factor and the reassurance that they are less likely to experience thermal runaway and subsequent fires.\u00a0 Oxis Energy makes that point by shooting bullets and pounding nails through their pouch cells with no loss of current and no release of the magic smoke inside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/45uevg34gwlltnbsf2plyua1-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/QSS-PR-April-2021.pdf\">Oxis seems headed toward a solid-state lithium-sulfur battery.<\/a>\u00a0 They will introduce Quasi Solid-State Li-S cells (with an electrolyte combining liquid and solid components with a specific energy of 450 Watt-hours per kilogram and an energy density of 550 Watt-hours per Liter this fall.\u00a0 They hope to increase those numbers to 550 Wh\/kg and 700 Wh\/L by the fall of 2023, and then to 600 Wh\/kg and 900 Wh\/L by 2026.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16368\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/eflyer-800-cycle-numbers.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16368\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16368\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/eflyer-800-cycle-numbers-528x352.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16368\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oxis Energy recently announced achieving 500 charge\/discharge cycles for its Li-S cells &#8211; formerly a weak point for the chemistry<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Oxis Energy CEO Huw Hampson Jones reports, \u201cBased on our existing U.S. client base, we know that aircraft manufacturers welcome the move from conventional to solid-state Li-S [batteries.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0The company is also offering the new Li-S batteries for various marine, defense, and ground vehicle applications. It has been developing the technology over the past four years and three years ago filed nine sets of patent applications.\u00a0 That\u2019s a small part of the company\u2019s innovative drive.\u00a0 With over 43 patent families, OXIS has been granted 204 patents for its Lithium Sulfur cell technology.
